First names you dislike

I know women that are named, Faith, Hope, and Charity and I think the mother's name is Joy.

My given name is one of these and I totally agree. Please don't feminize a boy's name with an "a".

I'm lucky I'm called "Robin". My mom used to call me "Bobby" and the aunt I was named after was called "Bert". *shudder*

My DD is named after her grandmother "Cecile" but even that was too masculine for me (too close to Cecil+ia). We shortened it to "Celia" ... hoping there were no nasty nicknames. WRONG! She has been known as "CeeCee" and "C" most of her life. I even refer to her as "C" or "Miss C" sometimes. *sigh*

My husband's name is Robert. His dad is also Robert (called Bob) and his mother... I am not sure what her given name was but they called her Bobbie (that could have been her given name for all I know) so his parents were Bob and Bobbie. His own family calls him Bobby (which is bizarre to me.... he's most definitely a Robert) but his brother calls him BERT which makes me crazy! So I almost feel your pain!

As far as "cute" spellings... I wonder if the parents spelled the name "cute" on purpose or if they truly didn't know how it's spelled!

Lol trying to be unique.. Just like everyone else!

I'm not a big fan of trendy names, ie: Madison, Reilly, etc. We also get a lot of kids with interesting names in the office: Sincere, Journnee (not my typo!), Peace, Harmony... I can keep going!

ETA: Weird spellings get me too. We had a little girl in the office last week named Hanna. Nothing weird about that, but when I called her back, her mom huffed, rolled her eyes, and goes "It's Anna. The 'H' is silent." How in hades would I know that? I felt like saying "that's what you get for spelling her name the way you did!" but I refrained.

Ask Vanna if you can buy a vowel. At work I have seen a Destiany- pronounced Destiny - and many Micheals. If I had to look the name up by alpha, I would sometimes ask if it was the traditional spelling. If they said yes and I couldn't find it, I would always look under Micheal and there it would be.

Oh- dog names. Those differ by person, but for me, dog names are Casey, Max, Dylan and Brandon. My DD named our last dog Maddie so now that one's ruined for me too.

I am not a fan of the "name of the year" thing, weather that is Heather, Jennifer and Jason in my generation, or Briana and Taylor when I taught preschool or Ryan in my kids' age bracket . . .(not becuase the names themselves are bad, just it gest tiring having so many in one generation)


Other than that, I never liked Hunter---since it is a name that basically makes me think of the person with a gun.

Hate to tell you that I've know more than one Karla. And if you said your name, I would ask, C or K.

Crazy as it is, I've had my name spelled wrong. I've received things in the mail with it spelled, Merry and Mari. And I've even met people with the same name as me, but spell it one of those two ways. One was born on Christmas, so it made sense.

I wouldn't want to be named Chelsea. Or any other name that is a place.

Never really liked my name. Always wanted a popular name growing up. I still have to spell it for people as many think it's a K. Car isn't spelled with a K so I never understood the confusion. Anyway....

I would really dislike Bertha.

I can think of 4 Karla's I am friends with----all spell their names with a K. So far as I know both spellings are common.

I do like the trend toward traditional names though, DD's name is a traditional name, Catherine.

I don't like trendy names, made up names, and especially unique spellings of any name.

My younger kids go to school with a girl named DeVocean. Her little sister is DeVine (it could be DeVign or Devine, I've never seen hers spelled out). The little girl next door was Serenity. Oldest DD went to kindergarten with a Starshine, they called her Star. I have to admit I liked that one, it fit her and her family. There was a girl on DD's U8 team whose name was a mashup of three names with a crazy pronunciation and spelling. They would go ballistic if said/spelled it wrong. It was a nightmare for me being the one in charge of jerseys, plaques and trophies.

I don't really want to play this game because I'm afraid of hurting someone's feelings. Although, I will say that I dislike the trend in "old names" that are making a return.

Sadly, my name was one of the "disliked" names from a PP.

I feel the same way about naming names on here, but I love old fashioned names. Always have.

I really don't like the name Kirsten (no offense to anybody named that)... yes I know it is like a legit name, but it still looks like a typo of the name Kristen to me Devon, Devin, Devyn and other variants of the name... it just bugs me. I have seen boys named that and I have seen girls named that, too confusing.

I used to work with a Kirsten & in several years worth of trips to Mexico to visit our plants there, not one time did any of the Mexicans pronounce her name correctly. She was always "Kristin" to them LOL

Boy, that one's really gained popularity over the past 20 years...currently I know more Kirstens than I do Kristins. Cutesy spellings are worthy of an eye-roll too. And I also dislike in general names that are basically made-up words like Nevaeh. I heard somebody nagging at a child named that in a store the other day and could hardly keep from laughing.

My least favourite regular, run-of-the-mill names are Adam and Rene (shudder - particularly don't like that one for some weird reason).

Me too. If your name is Nevaeh, I'm going to assume your mom was 16 when she gave birth. And unique spellings are silly - EmmaLeigh, just no.

That Jammi thing is ridiculous. Of course people are going to think it's Jammy. Poor girl .

I like Winifred and the nickname Winnie.

I think Flossie and Mildred (Millie) would be adorable on little girls.

Declan - I can stand pretty much any boy name except that one.
Kylie or Kaylee or Keeley (or really any variation of, even though I have a beautiful little niece with a similar name!)

Any "SH" name - Shelly, Sherri, Shirley, Sharon, Sheryl, Shelia, Shay, etc
Most of the 50 and 60's ladies names - Linda, Barbara, Deborah, Brenda, Denise, etc.

Not that I don't know some really amazing people with these names! I know many very beloved, wonderful women with these names. I just don't love the sound of the name.

And for semi-full disclosure, my name is one of the names in the lists above, but I won't say which one! I was born in 1976 and trust me, it's rare that I have ever met anyone my own age with my name - anyone with my name is usually 20 years older than me and cranky lol I always wished I was a Jenny, or Kim, or Kristie, or Amanda like all of my friends growing up!

I like Declan.

Gertrude, Eunice, Mildred, Earline, Agnes, Bertha etc. Had relatives with all of those names.

Love Gertrude (Trudy), Mildred (Millie), and Agnes. I have to agree that Earline is horrendous.

Sometimes a name is all about *who* you know with that name, and unfortunately, I haven't met one I've liked yet. At least in my town, and I know 3 of them between the ages of 10-17, every one of them is an entitled brat, especially the 17 year old. Ruined the name for me forever!

Haha, my daughter's middle name is Ethel after one of my grandmothers. I wanted to name her after both grandmothers and figured putting Ethel as the middle name was a lot better than a first name. I'm not a big fan of the name but my Grandma Ethel was a pretty amazing woman so I kept it.

My name is Michelle. I've always hated it and not many people outside of work call me that. To my aunts/uncles and cousins I am Mitch - I have no idea where that came from...It's unique for a girl that's for sure lol! My name gets spelled with 1 L all the time vs. 2.
Besides my own name I can't stand the name Hillary. I worked with a horrible woman when I was younger that had that name and she ruined it for me. I like traditional names and not the unique spellings people do now. My niece is Tayler. Why LER??? I always spell it wrong.....
