Superbowl talk

Oh people noticed...believe me. He lucked out on the timing of the Super Bowl deflecting the attention for a bit, but he is in no way going un-noticed.

Even <<I>> took notice of Johnny Manziel's troubles, and I didn't even know who Cam Newton was until yesterday. Johnny Football's antics have been all over the internet since he joined the NFL.

You can tell you are not a SEC fan. We have been watching the antics of those two clowns for several years. The Gators who never kick anyone out dismissed Scam Newton from the team for stealing a laptop and multiple honor code violations. I mean Florida put up with convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez but would not let Scam stay around. And after that there was the whole ugly business of his father selling his remaining year of eligibility to the highest bidder. And then some are surprised this arrogant, taunting jerk did not handle losing with even a small amount of grace.

Manziel was his own class of arrogant jerk at A&M. He also received inappropriate funds and liked to taunt others. No surprise he is imploding.

No I'm not a fan of the SEC or college football at all. I couldn't even tell you who won the Bowl championship just a month ago. I'll take your word about Cam Newton's college career.

As for the NFL, I'm a casual fan at best. I watch the Super Bowl because it's an "Event" and sit down for bits and pieces while DH watches regular season games. But I've been aware of the short troubled NFL career of Manziel. There's a headline on the internet practically every week, even though I rarely read the entire articles. So his troubles are definitely not going unnoticed even by the general population.

Who cares what Cam Newton did in College? Yes, he made some mistakes but, he's kept clean since he's been in the NFL. And if taunting is your biggest sticking point, then maybe curling might be a better sport to watch, because pretty much every NFL team has a few show-boaters. Why not take issue with Von Miller? He violated the NFL drug use policy, and was caught trying to bribe the urine guy to change out the sample. Aqib Talib, was just as much of a train wreck in the NFL. Or you want to get into real unsportsmanlike conduct? Let's discuss OBJ, and his hit on Josh Norman? That could've ended Josh Norman's career.

I will agree with you on Manziel, his college antics have bled over into his professional career. The dude has got to go!!!

I think Cam Newton is a talented QB. I'm not willing to label him the King Tool of the NFL because of dabbing and one mistake in a post-game interview!

I agree there are plenty of problem players in the NFL. Newton's past problems speak volumes to his character and don't go away just because the teams he plays for have changed. I think stealing a computer is a serious criminal charge. I think it is sad when we watch these young men get away with extremely bad behavior then go on into adulthood still behaving poorly just because they are a talented athlete.

I hope your comment about curling wasn't as much a personal insult as it sounded. I enjoy football. That doesn't mean I have to enjoy watching immature jerks who don't know how to be good competitors.

I'm not a Panther's fan or Cam fan, but I'm willing to cut some slack to a college sophomore who does something stupid like buying a hot laptop off some guy in a parking lot and trying to toss the item when the police arrive. Hard drugs, rape, beating up the girlfriend....nope, no second chances for those things. He was 100% wrong, but I just don't think something like that done at the age of 19 speaks volumes about his character. If that behavior continues then I'd say there's a problem.

Again, I am not a Cam fan, but I do think the guy seems to be judged so much harsher than the other idiots out there playing football. Manning didn't shake hands after he lost the Super Bowl a few years back and that was looked at as no big deal. Had Cam walked off that field without shaking Manning's hand it would have hit the fan. There are far worse players in the NFL that I'd like to see tossed out. A guy who showboats too much and didn't handle a press conference as well as he should have after a huge loss isn't even on my radar.

He didn't steal a computer, he was caught buying a stolen computer. And I could not agree with you more on wasted opportunity and athletes. IMO, Cam Newton has not wasted his opportunity yet. If he steals a car in the off season, then it's a different story.

No, my curling comment was not meant to insult you. Unfortunately the taunting and showboating is prevalent now more than ever in every sport (have you watched an OKC Basketball game lately??), and it's just not something that I let it bother me, or ruin my love for any sport. Curling is cool, BTW. It's my favorite Winter Olympic sport. ;)

It is very much disputed that he only bought a stolen laptop. He was arrested and charged with felony theft. The cell phone records on Newton's phone contained a conversation that points to him being guilty of more. That and the felony charge got washed away in part because the victim did not want to suffer repercussions for hurting the team and, of course, the athletic department lawyer who got involved.

So @asta I ask you, as a football fan, were you happy with the selection of the Super Bowl 50 MVP? Because you know drug use while in the NFL is pretty serious and speaks volumes to Von Miller's character. He was also the most fined player for dirty hits last year. I personally think that no player should be eligible for an award, such as MVP of the Super Bowl, if they've been suspended from the league at one time or another. I'll add Ray Lewis to being eligible for the HOF, as well as Adrian Peterson to my list, just so my message is not construed as a hatred towards Denver (since you know, it's pretty obvious I'm a Chiefs fan).

It seems that all you wish to do is focus on Cam Newton, his college transgressions, and a post game interview - when you have a drug using, cheap shotting linebacker who ALSO played in last nights game. Color me perplexed.

It's amazing all this hate for Cam and bringing up his college past. Maybe we should bring up Payton Manning? in 1996, while attending the University of Tennessee, Manning, while being examined by a female trainer, pulled down his shorts as she bent over behind him to examine his foot to determine why it was hurting, and she has claimed he then sat on her face and proceeded to rub his anal area and testicles on her face until she pushed him up off of her.

Most NFL players have done something stupid.

I am not a Bronco fan and I was not familiar with Von Miller's past. While drug use is wrong I do think felony theft is worse in my mind. One crime has a victim while the other is primarily hurting the drug user. That is a fine line but both are wrong. It also works against Newton that his crimes were much more notorious. As far as the league penalizing players the latest Brady cheating ruling seems to be handicapping the NFLs ability to impose penalties. If that ruling stands I can see many players contesting any penalty imposed by the league.

The focus is on Newton because his attitude and actions brings that focus.

I always dislike the strategy of trying to look better by making someone else look worse. It always more honorable to strive to be better.

I had to look that one up. EWWWWW! These athletes are so cocky and they try to get away with anything and everything. They think they are above the law. I guess that's the "advantage" of being a college athlete in 1996 when there weren't camera phones and social media so it was easier to get away with this crap. I wish I didn't enjoy sports as much as I do because I really can't stand a lot of the athletes.

Let me preface this by saying I am a NYG fan.

I think you are being way too critical of Newton. He made some mistakes in his past, and he has grown from them. He's not the same guy he was back in his Florida college days. If you look at his career, I think it was a big turning point when he went to a Blinn College. He cleaned up. He made mistakes in the past. He stole a laptop, a bad decision, and he talks about it. He doesn't deny it, but he talks about his past mistakes to show that you can make bad decisions and turn your life around. Also, look at all the charity work he does, and his work with kids. He's actually trying to make a difference.

The after game interview, could have been handled much, much better. The way people are responding, you would think he cursed out his team mates or the reporters (which he didn't), but he did give short answers and walked out early. He should have stayed and handled that better. I think emotions got the better or him, and if he felt he was headed for an emotional meltdown, walking away was the better choice. He needs to learn to handle these types of situations much better than he did. With that being said, he is being judged much more harshly than other players who have displayed far worse behavior on and off the field. I could list several, but for some reason most people are enjoying the pile-on to Cam meme.

Again, I had no skin in the game. Congrats to the Broncos on the SuperBowl win!

I agree, there is no reason to bring up his college past because of something he did Sunday. It stuns me how people are holding him to a higher standard that other players.

I love all the charity work he does and how he talks to children. You can tell he wants to make a difference in their lives.

I think he may be held to a higher standard because he is the league MVP, plus he is the quarterback (the key leadership position) on a conference winning team.

I personally don't care how he acts. I'm not a huge fan of sports/celebrity culture in general. However, if my 12-year old son was all happy, demonstrative, and celebratory when he did well on his sports teams, but mopey and discourteous when he did not, he would get a serious talking-to from me and maybe even held out of a game or two. I know that does not apply to supposedly professional adults, but why not...

Yeah, and as an adult, Payton has, more than once, violated the gag order on that case and made derogatory comments about the woman involved, trying to make her look bad. One of his teammates who was there even told him to stop telling lies about the incident and slandering her. Hard for me to have respect for a grown man who can't admit his mistakes and move on, but instead has to continue belittling a person who he harassed.

I'd have a lot more respect for Payton if he handled his college mistakes the same way, instead of compounding them as an adult.

I assume that as you are so critical of Cam, you must have a perfectly clean past. It must be nice to be perfect.

As for Cam's leaving the interview, it wasn't about him pouting, being disrespectful, or him having a problem with the questions. It was listening to Chris Harris on the other side. This article tells the real story. http://myfox8.com/2016/02/08/why-youre-wrong-about-cam-newton-and-the-postgame-press-conference/

Wait, Manning sexually assaulted a woman and everyone thinks he is a great guy? What a jerk.

he thinks the woman took the incident too seriously, and that she shouldn't have been in the locker room in the first place so it was her fault. He was just kidding around, geez! Women get so touchy when they have taint shoved in their face unexpectedly. . .
