The Line for Bag check

I would strongly disagree with you on that point. Just because someone is carrying a gun legally doesn't mean nothing can go wrong.

I am not a gun person and simply don't understand why anyone feels the need to bring a weapon to an amusement park.

I wonder how long it will be before we see metal detectors at Disney parks. They already have them at other amusement parks around the country.
I completely agree with you that things can certainly go wrong... for many different reasons and in many different ways, most often not involving any weapon of any kind. I feel compelled to respectfully remind you that "weapon" doesn't necessarily mean gun. In fact, I'd go out on a limb to say that more people bring all kinds of weapons into the parks that aren't guns. Anyway, I'm not attempting to be obtuse or argue semantics, but I do not intend to narrow the scope of this very polite discussion to being anti- or pro-gun.

Not sure how long it'll be before we see metal detectors at the Disney parks, but boy won't that make for great photo ops and lots of friendly discussions? :goodvibes

Absolutely, which is why I specifically used the word "weapon" and not "gun" in my post. I don't want Crocodile Dundee coming in with a hunting knife either.

All we bag people can do is hope. One of these bag-free types will spill ketchup on their shirt, and need a shout wipe, experience rain and need a poncho, be thirsty and need water, or have an accident, and need the big-boy pants we are totally prepared with. It's how I sleep at night. With my well- packed backpack by the door of the room

Shout wipes..tell me about these please? I don't think we have them in the UK ...but I could really do with them for when I wear white (don't spill on any other colour) and my DD"

The AK bag check line was incredibly slow when we were there last Friday. I've never been in a bag check line for such a long time - about 15 min. This was at park opening (9am).

I did see them confiscate a selfie stick...maybe they are looking more carefully for those? The person who had it was told they could pick it up as they exited the park.

The bag check isn't about weapons. It about trying to reduce any number of items that Disney doesn't want in their parks like coolers, glass bottles, bags of marbles, cell phone jammers, and in AK straws. This is why the guy's duct tape was confiscated. It is about protecting the park not the people. I am sure they keep an eye out for weapons as part of the check but that isn't really the main reason they search a 6 year old girl's backpack.

You can easily carry concealed into Disney World and never be detected. I hate to burst your bubble, but many do...

Which isn't bad at all. I think people should keep that in mind when looking at a picture like that. Security does a really good job of moving the crowd quickly and efficiently.

Yeah, a ten minute wait to get through bag check wouldn't even be a blip on my radar.

A line like that annoys me. It's truly security theater.

It can be a deterrent. Most security lines are. I had to go on a Military Base, the look of the guards etc. random checks of vehicles, going to a separate building to check ID is there to act a deterrent. A person with bad ideas can cause issues anywhere. Trying to prove that it has helped prevent something from happening is not something that can be measured. Also if contraband etc has been stopped at security, it is not something they are going to publicize.

It would go even quicker if the rest of the group without a bag would go and wait past security!

My personal favorite bag check story...in May at MK there was a family of 4 in line at bag check. The dad looked over and saw the "no bags" entrance, and started off that way. His wife said "but we have to get our bag checked", and he replied "I don't" and kept walking. I'll bet that family had a magical day...

My dd had similar thoughts earlier this week when checking in at the airport.
One of the staff asked her what was her final destination?!

Uh, I probably would have taken that as an omen of an impending crash and decided NOT to get on the plane, lol.

My husband goes through the no bag entrance - meets us on the other side ...

Saw a guy stuff a selfie stick down his pants at bag check today in Epcot.
Hope he got a good picture! :rotfl:
Unbelievable that people try bringing those after seeing all the signs when entering the parking lot

In his defence, he had just gotten off a bus and he stopped and read the sign right before bag check. He looked a bit panicked and first tried to put it in his girlfriend's purse, but then realized they would search it, so down his pants it went.

I got the impression that he wasn't going to use it in the park once he realized it wasn't allowed.

Yep. Just evidence that the bag check is all just a show, designed to make people fee better, but not providing any real security. Same as the Regal Theaters bag check. Because you know, a criminal with a gun would never think to stick it in his pocket, his sock or his waistband. But honest people feel better when they see the show.

The Regals in your area do bag checks? Never happens here.
