Official Avengers Half Marathon Weekend 2015 Thread

Thanks everyone for your help! At least now I can stop checking everyday for a couple months.

I neglected to say how excited I am that we are under the 100 day mark! With less than 100 days to go the Half is at 89% and the Pasta Party is at 72% I don't think anyone (except Disney) will mind a few less people on the half course and at the Pasta Party for those going. I'm hoping we get to see what the medals look like at the Disneyland Half weekend. It will be about 70 days out... So you would think they would have them ready.

Just did the City 2 Surf here last weekend. 14km race through the city with a massive 1.5km hill in the middle.

Well, I didn't exactly race it, I was running with DH, so it was more of a brisk walk for me :)

We had fun though, and now I'm eyeing off the next city running festival at the end of September, there's a 9km run and you get to run across the Sydney Harbour Bridge which sounds fun, but then I was looking at the course map and going "you know... that half marathon course looks fun..."

So now I'm trying to work out if I can squeeze a half marathon into my training in about 6 weeks time.

I did City2Surf too! I actually thought running up Heartbreak Hill how happy I was that the Disney course would be flat in comparison in November :faint: i kept telling myself if I could do that hill, I could do anything (along with the mantra "don't let the bloke in the hot dog suit beat you!").

Hah, did you beat hot dog suit guy? I'm fairly sure we came in ahead of the guy dressed as Super Grover, which pleased my DH no end, and I'm fairly sure at one point I saw a fairly familiar list of sponsors over take us (nothing like going for race weekend to get used to seeing the back of Disney race shirts).

I'm leaning towards doing the Blackmores Half, as long as I don't push too hard it takes the place of a 20km long run and a 8km Tempo run in my schedule (it's taking out two weeks cos I'm fairly sure I'll need one easy week after to recover). That sounds about equivalent to a Half to me.

Wine & Dine medals were revealed...hopefully that means Avengers medals will be soon too!!!

I had the exact same thought when I saw the Wine and Dine medals today. Since the Avengers race is the week after Wine and Dine I'm hoping we will see the Avengers Medals next week. If not, I'm guessing they will have them the following weekend at the Disneyland Half Expo. (Maybe having the medals there could get a few more people excited to sign up the Avengers Half.)

Since the half is only 89% full, it would be genius of the marketing team if the reveal the medals at the Disneyland Half Expo with a surprise redesign of the Avengers Half medal. They would probably get the sellout that weekend with people signing up at the Expo. But that's hoping for too much I guess since they had to do new designs of the challenge and the 10k and they rarely change the medal designs unless it gets to the 5th anniversary.

I thought hot dog man had escaped me as I came down the hill into Bondi and then I spotted him again at the u-turn towards the finish line. Gave me some end of race inspiration - he pipped me in the end though.

I also saw a couple of runDisney shirts on the course, and even overheard a conversation where a runner was being badgered about where she got her sparkle skirt from! Made me smile.

Yeah, I'd fully expect the Avengers medals to be out no later than the Disneyland Half Weekend. Might get a few more entrants, but still probably not a sellout without some kind of discount from that top tier pricing; even then it's short time frame for planning and paying for other travel needs. It's ok for us runners though -- a little more elbow room anyway! ::yes::

Feeling ya on the hotdog man, @bellrae! Locally I've encountered my own white rabbit -- the Purple Elvis. No idea when he starts or what his pace is; I just know I want to finish ahead of him whenever I see him... :rotfl:

Now that I have my PHM dining booked for February, I guess it is time to think about dining in November at DL for Avengers:) Love that I didn't have to plan my meals 6 months ahead out West. But, I have almost no experience out in DLR. I went once over 10 years ago for a day to DL. We ate counter service lunch and Napa Rose for dinner. We have 4 dinners to plan for plus lunches for our trip.

I am curious what some runners pre-race favorites are. Can anyone recommend a good pasta dinner place? I actually don't really carb up, but my kids have heard of the saying and I think it would be fun to do that Thursday night before we all do the 5k as a family. I am up for anything before the 10k and half. We are staying in a villa at VGC, so we'll have a kitchen, but I am planning on at least 3 dinners out, all breakfasts in the room (son is allergic to milk and eggs so breakfast out is often a hassle for him) and lunches in the parks. We are there Thursday afternoon through Sunday night.

No challenge medal reveal? Can I ask where you saw this?
I was wondering where the challenge medal was too. I could see them tweeting a picture of the half marathon medal to try to get people to sign up for it, but then why show the 5K, 10K and kids races too - and not the challenge medal? Weird.

I saw your Stride post and checked my email, sure enough there it was:) Thanks for posting it! Of course the IGC medal is the one I am waiting to see, but I'll take what I can get. Love that Thor is the theme of the 5k. When my son, now 9 was younger and the first Thor movie came out he used to refer to Thor's hammer as his "Whacker-Hammer" all the time. Pretty funny that will be on the medal when we do it together in November.

The IGC medal will be out later in its own reveal apparently, per the runDisney post on Facebook. Captain America is what I expected being a shield, and I'd guess the IGC will be a gauntlet design with maybe a purple/yellow ribbon. If they were to do something extra, I'd think either some colorful or glow-in-the-dark "gems", but we'll find out soon enough. :)

We've only been out there once a couple years ago for DL Half Weekend, but the 60 day reservation system was super easy since there isn't the same kind of frenzy for dining there; if anything, people seemed surprised we were making reservations that far out. We didn't eat enough places to have a solid pasta option, but I'll throw out that our pre-half marathon meal was a thin crust pizza with some chicken and other toppings from The Pizza Press across the street from the pedestrian entrance to the parks. Might not fit your needs with allergies, but thought I'd throw it out there anyway as it was pretty easy to get in-and-out and was pretty tasty.

I want to take an informal survey if that's okay with you folks. If not, you don't have to answer :upsidedow

Feel free to share as much/as little information as you want:
  • Price
  • Area/airport leaving from
  • Dates of Flights
  • Airline
  • When you booked

We are flying from Kansas City (MCI) to John Wayne/Orange County (SNA) for about $120 each way on Southwest. Our flight to SNA stops in Oakland, CA and our flight home stops in Phoenix. I've been on the SNA-PHX-KC plane many times. We booked about two weeks after we registered for the races during a Southwest sale.

We ate pasta at Red Rocket's Pizza Port in Tomorrowland the night before the DL Half Marathon last year and it was pretty good. Not a lot of variety there, but it is a good sized plate of spaghetti and meatballs and pretty tasty too.
