The MAXI dress... not for me!

I love dresses and long skirts in the summer. I'm such a girly girl in that way, so the Maxi is right up my alley. I'm a little on the taller side, 5'9 and so the length is perfect for me. I am fortunate that this type of dress I'm able to wear and not give a second thought to. I don't own one pair of shorts simply because I prefer dresses and skirts so my summer closet is full to the brim. My eldest daughter likes to make fun of me because all of my dresses are long and flowy and she says I get wrap up in them and I look like one of the people from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon with all the fabric whirling around me, lol.

Even the dress for my niece's wedding this month is a Maxi style bridesmaid dress.

I look freakish in them and feel extremely self conscious in them. I'm 5'8" and while not fat, I have a huge chest. I also hate my exposed arms.

It appears the MAXI dress isn't just a fad, it's here to stay! Must of them are really cute. But I'll never own one.
WHY?
The fabric used is too clingy for me. I have lumps and bumps that I am not proud of. Some call them "curves", just another word for fat to me.

Spanx and warmer temps don't appeal to me.

I'll just have to enjoy seeing everyone else wear their cute MAXI dress.

maxi dresses are not all made of the same material.
you'd just have to find one thats not a clingy material.
cotton ones would be less clingy than ones made out of a "dressy" material.
i can't wear them but thats because every one i come across is about a foot too long and drags on the ground. i'm 5'6" so i'm not "short" but it just doesn't work for me where as my sister who is 5'10" can easily wear them and its no where near dragging on the ground.

as someone who has terrible spider veins from ankle to knee, I am THRILLED Maxi's are still in style and that I have this option! We have a wedding in July and I can relax knowing my legs won't be an embarrassment to me and my family. I love that I can get a maxi and alter it to ballerina length or whatever I need as well, and not look like an over-the-hill ,wanna be bridesmaid, gone wrong :rotfl2: There are fabrics out there that are more forgiving. I bought this one hopefully for the wedding,it looks like it shows every bump etc, but it really doesn't, the layered effect is especially helpful :rolleyes1 and I can wear a normal bra, not a strapless which is a make or break for me.

I have never found one that works on me. I'm completely out of proportion - 5'1", but even petites don't work, as I'm very long-waisted with only a 26" leg inseam. The waists are always too high, and the skirts still drag. I have the same issue with pants - the waists sit on my hips, but the legs drag on the ground. I even hate capris - they're regular pants on me!

I bet that's in your head, particularly if you're lucky enough to be 5'8". Go shopping with a good friend, you know, the friend who will tell you true. I bet you find a selection you'll look great in. You can always get a little sweater or something to wear if your arms bug you. I picked up a couple very lightweight ones for the same reason and they were great even in Vegas in the summertime on a chick who carries her own perpetual summertime with her these days.

Sweater talk reminded me I found those, and another maxi at Chico's last year, so that might be another place OP could check out, depending on her age.

If I feel uncomfortable in them, my friend's opinions mean nothing.

Also, not wearing a sweater in summer lol.

Eliza61 & finfan ~ where did you get your's?

I love getting a maxi style skirt, because it gives me so many options, plus I don't feel comfortable in shorter skirts/dresses.

I thought you were interested & was trying to encourage you. I know when I'm feeling out of my depth I like to shop with a good friend -- or if I'm feeling really strong, my daughters. It helps me step out of my box sometimes, particularly when I know they have absolutely no hesitation with "No, just no, mom."

I was anxious about my arms & got two extremely lightweight sweaters & wondered if I was kidding myself. I've been known to kick off all the blankets when it's below zero here. My little sweaters worked great, I wasn't miserable at all & I felt better with my arms more covered up.

I just wish they had them with sleeves. I don't want to wear a sweater or a wrap in the summer but my office gets too cold from the A/C. I'm 5'2' and I wear a lot of long skirts with t-shirts in the summer.

How many times on this site do you see comments about hoping Disney is reading, listening, hoping they will take the opinions into consideration. Seems like some designers, stores, manufacturers need to be reading this to understand we need some variations in lengths -- and some options with sleeves too!

I'm 5'1" and every dress I've seen in the stores is taller than me. I just don't get how a long dress wouldn't make me look shorter. I don't even wear Bermuda shorts for that reason. Though I love the dress prints and they seem like a nice easy thing to wear in the summer.

and this one is from Overstock

I'm not a fan of them. Too many flashbacks to the late 60's/early 70's long dresses we wore then. I especially do not like the Maxi dress/thong combo....:scared:

Target has a few styles with short sleeves! I have one I bought a couple of months ago at Target with sleeves...it's Xhilaration brand (not sure if that's the correct spelling) and it has a gorgeous strappy back & short sleeves and you can wear a regular bra with it. :) I'm 5'3"/5'4" and weigh 117lbs and the small fit well...not too long, even with sandals.

I can't stand them. I know many people love them and think they're flattering but I have never seen one and thought it looked good or flattering. Sorry.
