With multiple trips over the next twelve months as well as multiple race events I thought a single PTR would be the best way to get my thoughts down rather make all of my poor dis friends crazy trying to keep up with multiple ones.

Since plans are already making me branch out and ask questions, it is time to get this started!

I will give a shout out to a PTR that inspired me to try this format. Her training/travel PTR can be found here

I am bound to ramble between training and various trips, so if you are just interested in reading about one verses another be sure to check the first page often. I will keep things organized under the chapter links.

Now let the fun begin!!!!

There will be various "characters" who join me for the trips that revolve around these races, I will skip introducing them just yet. Instead, let me get into who I am.

My name is Ann. I didn't grow up loving disney and in fact did not take a trip to Disney until I was 30 years old. I also did not grow up running and only just started at the young age of 42. So how did I get to be a 44 year old running disney loving fanatic?

Lets start with having 4 kids. Kira is my oldest daughter who is married. Zach is my oldest son and is now engaged. Alex is just 18 and the "baby" of my older kids. Last but not least is Zoe who IS my baby and just turned 9. Having kids will definitely help to give you a Disney bug. With all of my kids we collected all disney movies and watched them...all of them... sometimes way too much. (is it too many times if you can recite word for word parts of the movie? Naaa ;))

I also am married to my wonderful high school sweetheart named Steve. Once Steve became established in his career it became time to start taking the kids on vacations. What better place than to Disneyland (we are on the west coast) So in 2000 we took the then three kids on our first trip to Disneyland and thus began our love affair with ALL things disney - not just the movies.

Eventually, we decided that we needed to see what the east coast had in their park. This led me to do "research" and I found the disboards. One trip led to another which then led to trip reports and pre trip reports and making friends.

It was through the making of friends that I was introduced to running. Disney has running events? Who knew!!! Surely not I, but someone who was very knowledgable in all things Disney did! Since she and I had became friends she encouraged me to take a trip with her to do a RunDisney event.

In preparation for that race, I stuck with a training program through some injury and in the summer of 2012, I ran my very first race (a 10k) in order to get a POT (proof of time) to submit to RunDisney.

When that first RD event arrived, I was ready and I fell in love! It was a good thing too since my friend had already convinced me to register for my second RD event by that time (the phm in 2013)

I continued with training during that fall. Unfortunately and sadly, things did not end up going as planned for my next RD event and I ended up needing Steve and Zoe to tag along with me.

Things have a way of working out though and in having him tag along we came to realize two things. 1. Steve would also love to do an RD event and 2. If we were going to be doing these events regularly we should really look into DVC.

So after getting back from our trip last fall we started to really think about the DVC option and by the summer we were DVC members.

As we sought out DVC membership, I also signed up for other events locally as well as another RD event. This one would just be a group of friends. Steve was very jealous that I would be going to do another one without him so when registration for the donald opened, we both were quick to register.

Now having one RD event under his belt, he was sold and IN LOVE with RD events. We as a couple are definitely excited for more (yes, we are signed up for another RD event and plan two more)

And since no intro should be without a picture. Here is Steve and I after the Donald last month.

Anyone read any of my past PTRs? If you have then this wont surprise you. I am experiencing airfare drama. :rotfl2:

I have let companion fares I have on alaska expire because it is usually cheaper to buy two tickets elsewhere rather than the one + companion on Alaska. In fact, for our trip last month I tried and tried to find a good deal for fares on Alaska using the companion fare and I swear the flight was not a great one AND ended up costing something crazy like $800+ for the two tickets.

Between monitoring for all my trips and also booking the return flight for one (I will get to that in another post) I noticed that Alaska might not be a bad idea to look at.

A bit of a spoiler if you are reading my most current TR... but our non direct flights about killed us all last month. I think we are traumatized and so the idea of a direct flight is down right heavenly. :cloud9: So now Alaska has a good direct flight there and back AND the cost is not bad.

So where is the drama?

Given that we are planning a short beach excursion too I took a look at flights in and out of Tampa. :faint: Well of course that flight is even less. This led me to think "what if we just flew in and out of Tampa and rented a car for the entire trip rather than just the last week or so?"

I think I have decided, but would love to hear what any of you think. I posted to the travel board and got some great feedback that helped me... but here is the run down.

The pros:

  • Flying to Tampa will save the 4 of us a total of $312.
  • Will get the a car for the entire 11 days.
  • It will only take about 30 minutes more to get from TPA driving than it would to get from MCO using DME.
  • The flight leaves at about 9am (unlike the regular 6 or 7am flights we are use to)
  • Could stop for dinner before arriving to WDW
  • Could go grocery shopping before checking into resort
  • Would have a shorter drive back from Sarasota than if we had to go to MCO

The cons:

  • No DME
  • Have to collect our own luggage
  • Will cost a little less than $100 more to get the car
  • Will arrive to our resort about an hour and a half later (assuming no stops)
  • Is less likely that a trip to the parks will happen that night

So I guess maybe there isn't as much drama as I thought. I just have been battling this thought all week of "breaking routine"

Omg I'm the first!!!!!! This is the trip the in laws are meeting up with y'all correct? The fall trip? I think having the direct not wake up at 3 am flight is worry the Very few cons! Lately you've seemed to spend the first few days on each trip recovering from the early flight and all the back and forth with layovers!

You are the first!!! :cool1::cool1:

Yep, this is the trip the in laws are coming. Course, they bailed on part of it already...so who knows what we will end up by the time the trip rolls around. Since they needed their own room and I needed Kira to watch Zoe while Steve an I had our anniversary trip - we booked a second room for Kira and Zoe to stay for the majority of the trip. This way if the in laws do bail...we are not out the points we used to book the room.

I will "officially" post about the airfare soon... but I did go ahead and book it. Kira won't be terribly pleased that she will be missing out on DME and on the evening in MK...but for the cost and the extra hour of sleep in the morning it will be perfect! The only issue I foresee if if the in laws bail completely on us with the beach house and we then have to stay in WDW a few extra nights. Then we will be ending our trip in Orlando rather than on the island and have to drive from there down. Not the worst thing to happen though so I am not all together worried. :goodvibes

With the ToT-10miler trip heavy on my mind, I thought it would be a good time to explain who is going.

Of course there is Steve and I. We are there not only for the race, but because it is our 25 year anniversary this fall.

For some time now, Steve and I planned for the trip to be just the two of us. However we realized two things recently.

One was that Steve's parents wanted to come to enjoy the race with us. They had plans to stay for the month of October on Annamaria Island. Since the race fell within that they figured they would come up for a couple nights, do the race and after party, have breakfast with us the day after the race and then head back to their rental house. Since they needed their own space rather than a room with us, we now needed a second room for at least 2 nights. However, knowing them I figured it could be more or less. So when Kira pointed out that she would not be able to watch Zoe over her birthday weekend because she wanted to do something special it made sense to take her and Zoe along.

So for sure it will also be Kira and Zoe.

IF all goes according to plan (and lets just say it already has changed, but I will get to that later:rolleyes:) Then Steve's parents, Mike and Di, will also be joining us for part of the time...all of the time...none of the time. Who knows for sure. :rotfl2:

WOW! That is quite the list. I feel like a slug in comparison. We have one race each in March, April and May (15K, 12K and 8K) but that's it. We will see if we add anything after that or not.

Snagging it when the price is right is always good and those savings pay for a car I think you'd need to no matter what.

Yay! I'm here! :thumbsup2

So glad you are! I am sending you lots of good race vibes for the weekend!!!

I'm here!

And don't forget you have a very BIG race in August! That is totally not a slug!!

When I put it on paper that list seems more impressive than I think it really is. My list from last year was long too. Course, last year did not have as many halfs on it. :scared:

Snagging it when the price is right is always good and those savings pay for a car I think you'd need to no matter what.

I agree! And yes... the car would be needed at least for the last 4 days. Renting a car for 4 days though might as well be a week because the cost isn't much more for a full week. SO in my comparisons (as twisted as they may be) I compared a week rental in orlando to the 11 day rental out of tpa. The cost jump was a bit less than $100. So I figured I saved about $200 for the airfare even with getting the car for longer.

CUTE pics of Kira and Zoe!

Thanks! Josh (Kira's dh) had his camera on the trip last month and took a lot of really good pictures. I wish I could take photos like he did.

Following along! :goodvibes

:cool1:

I'm here! That's a lot of races you are thinking of doing!

Glad you are here!!! Yeah, it is a lot. Especially considering there are a total of 4 half marathons in there. I don't worry so much about the dlh, or the lvh... but then the donald and phm are so close together. Those worry me. As far as number of events go though... I did something similar last year. One event a month was the goal and I pretty much did that. I am a member on athlinks and that site is AWESOME for tracking all of your races. Almost all of mine are there on my dashboard with all my stats. I had to manually enter one race so it lists it as unofficial....and one was a color run so not timed and so not on there.

Since I made mention of Athlinks in my last comment... I thought I would go into this a bit further. It is a great site that allows you to "claim" your events. It has a record of you and then lists your stats for each race. It even color codes according to where you are compared to other runners in that race. (red means back of the pack..to green is front of the pack - with the shades gradually shifting from a bright red to orange to yellow to green) I use to have to google search each race to be able to look up the results. Now I can find all of my races in a nice and handy location. So with that I can see what my previous race schedule has looked like.

I know my list is pretty long and I do realize I may not get to do everything on that list if for no other reason that time and expense. But goals are important, yes? Also, this is my form of entertainment (outside of disney)

So how does my dashboard look on athlinks?

I had my first race in 8/2012 and I have had few months since that I didn't have some event I have done. Curious to see a list? Maybe not, but I will share anyway. :rotfl2:

8/12 - 10k
9/12 - 10miler
10/12 - 10k
11/12 - 5k
NOTHING IN DECEMBER 2012
NOTHING IN JANUARY 2013
2/13 - Half
3/13 - 10k (unofficial on athlinks)
4/13 - 10k
5/13 - 8k
6/13 - 5k
7/13 - COLOR RUN (fun run no time)
8/13 - 10k
NOTHING IN SEPTEMBER 2013 (planned two in October)
10/13 - 10miler
10/13 - 10k
11/13 - 5k
NOTHING IN DECEMBER 2013
1/14 - Half
NOTHING IN FEBRUARY 2014 (two are planned for March)

And how do I measure up? My early ones are all "red" My more recent ones "green".

So I may seem like I have a long list ahead of me, but other than the fact that I have way more half on it that I perhaps should... it probably is doable.

:goodvibes

A lot of you probably already know that once Steve and I returned from the half in January, we fell ill. I think we truly had influenza. It really took both of us down. Steve had double pneumonia in the summer so his lungs are still super sensitive. So this new plague really hit him hard. He has ran very little since coming back. Me - I have probably pushed harder than I should have. I think Steve and I need to find a happy medium between the "I am feeling ill and absolutely no running" and "I am feeling ill but by God I will not miss a run"

We each had put a goal of 1000 miles ran in 2014. Seemed like a good one on January 1. I hit over 900 for 2013, so why not? Well, January left me with only having ran 32 miles. February has slowly improved, but I am still behind in my goal. (I have about 50 miles for February with one week left to go) I think this "being behind" is what has caused me to take my miles up maybe more than I need them to be at this point. Afterall, I am not training for a half just yet. I am only training for a 10k and a 5k.

So thinking about those two races in March. I wish the 5k would be first, but it is what it is and the 10 is two weeks from tomorrow with the 5k a week later. For those of you who are not as aware of what those distances are - a 10k is 6.2 miles making the 5k (half of the 10k ;)) 3.1.

In a normal week I try to run 4 times. Maybe that seems high, but I don't do anything else. My job is fairly physically demanding so I count that as my cross training. ;)

So my plan for the March races is this (and I will post to let you know how I am doing)

2/22 - 6 miles. This will finish off this week a bit less than I like but I am trying to keep in mind my miles WILL get up high when training for the halfs and I really don't need them to be up that high just yet. Right?

2/24 - 2 miles. This should be for speed, but since getting back I have not been as speedy as I like. My best 2 mile run I sub'd and 8 min mile pace. I ultimately have a goal to get back down to that for my 2 mile runs. For now though I will take a sub 9.

2/25 - 4 miles. This should be a good pace, but not for speed.

2/27 - 5 miles. This can be at a slower pace, but should not be "too" slow.

3/1 - 6 miles. This can be as slow as I need it to be. It will count as my "long" run for the week.

3/3 - 2 miles, again for speed.

3/4 - 4 miles, again a good speed. I need to push a bit but not too much.

3/6 - 4 miles. I will take this easy since I hope to get a good time on 3/8 for the race.

3/8 - 6.2 miles. Foothills Dash RACE DAY!!! I doubt that I will PR this distance. I can hope, but I doubt I will. I would have to finish in less than 55:59 This is the first time running THIS race though, so I can count it as a PR for that. ;) This race will take place on a trail that Steve and I like to run. It is in the town that our daughter, Kira lives. It is also the same course as a race from last year that I ran and finished as the first female finisher and 2nd over all. So I am familiar with how I perform on this course. It shouldn't be too challenging. It will have more participants than race from last year. Last year's race (the double half) really was more about the fact that it included back to back half marathons. Most registrants ran one or both of the halfs so there really was not as many runners doing the 10k or 5k. It was a good race but it does not look as though that promoter is doing it again. Since I had finished the way I did, I had hoped to use it for a POT to RD (cause all my races ultimately are a way for me to run disney). RD has made new rules in 2014 requiring USATF certification on races. This double half race was sanctioned but not certified. When I contacted the promoter to discuss it he told me that it was just too costly for him to have it certified. I suspect that maybe that has something to do with why it does not appear to be scheduled again for 2014.:sad2:

3/10 - 2 miles for speed.

3/11 - 4 miles at a good pace

3/13 - 6 miles easy pace.

3/15 - 3.1 miles St. Paddy's Day Run RACE DAY!!! I still need to register for this. Aside from the RunDisney events I also like to try and do all of the RunSnoqualmie events. Last year I had wanted to run a 10k for St. Paddy's day and so we stayed closer to home. Problem is closer to home can be VERY hilly. The race was advertised as flat, but it had a pretty huge hill. Another thing I look for is what comes with registration. Do I get a tech tee a regular tee..nothing? I liked that last year's race offered taco trucks and doughnut booths. The course though was tricky and the shirt was one the promoter was last minute frantically using iron ons to apply the logo to...so despite the goodies in the end I decided to go with a shorter race from a promoter who knows how to put on a great race. (plus his courses are always TRULY flat) First time for this race will mean a PR for it, but again I doubt I will PR the distance. I would have to do better than 27:36. I suppose it is possible if I really push.

Joining in!

You have a ton of races to going on for you this next year. Awesome job on that. I'm sure you'll do great on your 10k in 2 weeks.

I would totally go with flying into Tampa over MCO. Having a car makes Disney so much easier sometimes.

Joining in!

So glad you came over to join! It is always nice to have another runner around.

I hope to do ok in a couple weeks. I mainly just want to enjoy it... nice weather, don't feel like I am dying...etc. If I do well it will be a bonus.

I would totally go with flying into Tampa over MCO. Having a car makes Disney so much easier sometimes.

We officially got our airfare in and out of tampa. Breaking routine is always hard for me, but I am hopeful that this works out well.

So it is official. I booked our flights into Tampa on 10/1 returning on 10/11. :cool1: We are about 7 months out now and I am relieved to have this taken care of. This flight will leave late enough in the morning that we don't need to do Steve's usual required "night before" stay at a hotel near the airport. It is a direct flight there. My only worry is that it arrives pretty close to rush hour. Maybe by the time we get the car commuters headed north won't be on the road as much? The return leg will allow us to sleep in and still spend a good day with the in laws. We won't have to leave until late afternoon since our flight is not until 6:30pm. I just hope we are not twiddling our thumbs all day. I love love LOVE my in laws, but they do tend to have their own plans and schedules and no matter how much we share with them our plans or confirm with them their availability somehow they find a way to become unavailable. When the kids were young we would travel from out of town for a weekend trip to see them only to arrive and have them go grocery shopping. In december my daughter Kira, her husband and I went for a quick trip over to see them (about a 5 hour drive). We let them know the approximate time we would be there, confirmed we were not staying long and confirmed they would be around. About an hour or so into the visit they got weird and started hemming and hawing around how they had to have dinner. It seemed as though they were looking for a way to ask us to leave...so we took the hint. I can't fault them any really. I get having a schedule. I just hope that their schedule doesn't leave us sitting inside a room for three days while we wait for our flight to depart.

I'm here; back to read and catch up.

***Okay...all caught up. That is a lot of races...good for you. It seems like last year (or the year before), we miss you by 5 days yet again. :(

One of these days we will cross (although no Disney World trip planned in 2015; we plan on DL instead).

I look forward to following along.
