Any federal employees facing a furlough?

Sil switched divisions right before wedding and is not sure if he is essential or not. He will be contacted tomorrow to be told. I am worried that being off for wedding now is bad. He was told he is ok to take this time and they knew this was coming. His understanding was he just wouldn't get paid for it if it switched to furlough.

I feel badly for all of you who are going to lose paychecks. This is so unfortunate and so preventable if Congress would stop acting like toddlers. As I heard one lady saying yesterday, they all need to be spanked. :thumbsup2

Sadly, yeah. I sometimes wonder at the number of people who just don't get the idea that roads, bridges, passports, their safety, the (somewhat) clean air that they breathe, the non-spoiled food that they eat and the safe drugs that they take were all brought to them via government services. I think they think those things just somehow happen. :confused3

I'm reading on this thread that this does seem to hold for the most part true. Is it Human Nature//someone elses problem? A thread I started yesterday about Obama Care and the experience of the state of Massachusetts; is far more indicative of the meat and potatoes in the situation so to speak.

I hope it works out well for him, and for the rest of us too.

My sister is very worried because they have sold their house and are supposed to be closing soon. The people who bought it are first time home buyers going through some kind of government loan. I think that part is closed too so this will effect them and their closing. :scared:

Also my sil is highly skilled and educated. He has five years in and can leave and get a private sector job. They are risking losing their most skilled and experienced employees. He gets very project devoted and did not want to consider leaving mid project but if this stuff keeps happening I can't see him staying.

:thumbsup2: A bunch of spoiled brats who need to get their way.

All of them - just as usual. On both sides from what little real details I can find. Most news articles are opinions more than news so its hard to get to the real truth.

It's a shame to say this but, for the most part, I don't think the public cares unless they are IMMEDIATELY impacted. In reading some comments on the internet yesterday, I get the sense that a lot of America is gleeful that we are furloughed. I try to tell myself that they don't represent everyone, but sometimes its hard to read.

Well, I'm not directly impacted (at least I don't think so, if it goes on long enough, I'm sure I will be), and I can tell you, that I care :flower3:. I feel terrible for those that are impacted financially and in all the other ways discussed here. I know what its like to struggle, and I don't know what we would do without even one paycheck. People forget that public employees are people working hard to do their jobs just like anyone else.

I agree with her!!

I'm more nervous now because of the debt ceiling and all surrounding that. The date is Oct. 17th. Our trip has to be paid off by Oct 9th, and while we have the money to do it my husband is going to sit on it just in case. :worried: I have heard that Disney will let you extend it but I have never done that and I don't know if they would give us two weeks. I can't even remember how much I would loose if I had to cancel closer to time because we have never had to do that. I could pay it off and wait to see what happens. I'm just not sure what to do at this point. Is it bad that I am more worried about my vacation than the big picture here? :upsidedow I have been planning this forever!

Given the situation, Disney should give you until the 30 day mark. If you cancel, you would lose $200 (and insurance if you bought that). We leave on the 18th, and that 17th deadline scares me more than our current situation. Flights could be grounded at that point. :scared:

I am over this entire thing. This elected to do the people's bidding is gone in my opinion. I don't know one person that wants the gov't to shut down whether directly impacted or not.

I think most American want a real functioning semi normal government working for the people. Right now it's just all grandstanding and pushing and shoving for future political prospects and gains. There is no thought to the people that they supposedly represent.

Every single person elected in DC should be fired as of today. We as everyday average working people would be fired for not doing our job. We would not be allowed to give constant excuses and then continue with the bad behavior. I hope as Americans we take our country back and show that we want real representation and a functioning government.

I am so sorry for my fellow civilian workers. I almost feel guilty that my husband did get paid but then I feel that it's the right thing to do. However most people don't seem to know that there are thousands of civilians deployed working alongside the military who will not be paid but still stuck in the warzone. What a disservice all the way around.

Great post!

Sarah, I talked to an FAA employee on my way into work this morning (I work at the airport), he said the FAA is not funded the same way and that they aren't impacted by the shutdown.

I'm sitting alogside a lot of disgruntled employees today, as we're all here, but not sure if and when we'll get paid.

I can't imagine having a spouse in a war zone and being home unable to pay the bills or buy food. It's disgusting. I am assuming since they don't know if they will get paid these workers can not file for unemployment either. We can't say to congress we don't like your decisions so we're not paying you until you do what we want. There are people in office who I will never vote for in the future.

Thank you! I was thinking it was $200. but I was not sure. It's worth the risk I guess. Hopefully DH will agree. I'm already going to lose $385. if we cancel because my daughter is signed up to be in the parade with All American cheer while we are there. What's another $200? :rolleyes1

I hope that they do something to work all of this out soon, and I hope that it's resolved before you leave. Could you drive if you had to?

Other than the military and those associated directly with it - I'm ok with it. I also don't believe that those non-essential employees should be given back pay. Let them take unemployment (if out long enough) like the rest of the common folk.

The private sector has been struggling for many years now. Maybe the insulated govt employees will see what it's like to live with job uncertainty. Lots of folks downsized years ago are underemployed and working more than one job to make ends meet all the while supporting plum government jobs.

It's time to figure out what the real role of government is and only fund it to that extent - we have far overreached what's necessary to run the country and in fact have stretched government to the detriment of the private sector.

This shutdown, no, but DH said that the 17th deadline could have a major impact on air travel. :sad2: I hope everything works out for you!

We would definitely drive if it came to that. Nothing will keep us from taking this trip. After the last few months, we NEED it. I hope you can make your trip. How exciting for your DD to be in a parade! :goodvibes

Wow, do you know if this includes marines? My son is supposed to come home next Thursday for my wedding.

I have no idea, sorry. My husband is civilian DoD. There are people in his office on vacation this week ... they've been told to come back today or be placed on furlough. No guidance has been given (at least in his office) about what happens if you go on furlough. Do you control when you come back or is it up to someone else?

Do you think Disney Travel will consider this a valid reason for canceling, if it comes to that? We're within our 5-day window ... but I'm not changing our reservation until I know we can't risk leaving town.

good grief, I am SOOOO mad. :headache:

Wow! Tell us how you really feel!

For your information, I used to work in the private sector and took a paycut to work in the government, because to me job security was more important than the size of my paycheck.

Unlike the private sector, many government employees are underpayed for the same job qualifications.

For those that have been furloughed, I agree in a way, they shouldn't have to be retributed. But for the essential employees, those that had to report for duty this morning, it is only fair they should be paid for their work!

clearly, you're not a federal employee facing furlough. (the intent of this thread) :confused3
