I feel for those of you affected by this mess.

Call me an idiot but my country did the same. We gave everyone ,even illegals access to our health system. For us tax payers the cost of health service was raised by 2000% yes two thousand percent.
Every illegal comes to my country and gets millions of care for a sex change.

Both my DD and her husband work for the feds. Last I knew they were expected to report to work but may not get paid until the shutdown is over.

My son is a military contractor and his wife is in the Navy - they are both stationed in Italy. At least she will continue to be paid.

that's the long and short of an email DH got today. no one can take leave, for any reason during the shutdown ... planned or unplanned. if you don't come to work, you get furloughed.

it's fall break. everyone I know has plans to leave town ... some leaving as soon as Wednesday.

On top if that, they will not be fully functional and will be limited as to what they can do because of supporting offices being closed. He expects an angry public.

It's a shame to say this but, for the most part, I don't think the public cares unless they are IMMEDIATELY impacted. In reading some comments on the internet yesterday, I get the sense that a lot of America is gleeful that we are furloughed. I try to tell myself that they don't represent everyone, but sometimes its hard to read.

Unfortunately, I am on hospital bed rest expected to deliver anytime in the next 2 wks and he was scheduled to start leave today to ensure he is home for the birth of our first.

Now, I am considered AWOL and not get paid while he will not be able to take leave and his work schedule is one that makes him unavailable for days at a time.

Wow, you are essential and still don't get paid. I would hope, ( yeah right) that for medical reasons, you would be exempt from this.

Maybe they appear "glad" because they think it will force the Govt to realize how they have failed.

Sadly, yeah. I sometimes wonder at the number of people who just don't get the idea that roads, bridges, passports, their safety, the (somewhat) clean air that they breathe, the non-spoiled food that they eat and the safe drugs that they take were all brought to them via government services. I think they think those things just somehow happen.

My thought was that the leave issues only applied to the civilian workforce.

Since only essential civilians can work, they are on a "skeleton crew" so to speak. They can't really grant leave in that case.

For military members, it's business as usual since no troops are being furloughed so I can't imagine why it would impact leave for them.

Your son's leave depends on what he is doing. If he is "mission essential" then he can be denied leave until this mess is resolved. It all will depend on what your son does in the Marines and where he is being used. A lot of military will be placed to do things when lacking civilian counterpart.

This sucks. Yes most appts can be delayed, but not all. There are things that come up in life that can not be scheduled and aren't under our control.

There is never a guarantee sadly. Hopefully the unit can work around your son's time off and give him his leave.

I think you are right. He was talking about the people who come into his office needing their services.
