This is the first time that we've got to really see Derek work with someone with no dance experience. But then Amber does have to learn some choreography on Glee.I swear, there is just something about Derek! The man has talent. He knows how to highlight assets and disguise faults. That girl got out there and shook with the good Lord gave her and she shook it well. She did fantastic!

I guess dance experience is a poor choice of words. He has always gotten "good" partners. He hasn't had the variety as say Cheryl or Tony has.Neither Shannon Elizabeth nor Jennie Garth had dance experience, either. I'm not sure about his other partners as I can't remember who all he has danced with.

I haven't watched this in several years, but decided to try it again tonight. I turned it on right before Elizabeth's dance. I was very surprised to see several lifts. I didn't think they were allowed to do lifts until later in the show, but I guess that's an old rule.
It depends on the dance style. Argentine Tango and Contemporary are two styles that allow lifts. She was dancing Contemporary so it was allowed. If she had done, say the ChaCha, lifts would not have been allowed.
Brooke Burke didn't have dance experience, either. I can't find anything on Lil Kim having previous dance experience. Joanna Krupa took ballet as a child. We all know about Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Grey. Rikki Lake had some training in broadway style dancing, but nothing really extensive. Kellie Pickler was a cheerleader, but I'm not sure I would call that dance experience.
All of the other pros get people who have taken ballet, have been on broadway, or somethings similar from time to time, as well. I think people just think Derek gets the ringers because he is one of the pros who really knows how to choreograph to strengths while disguising weakness. Some of the pros are better at this than others.
I just love Bill Engvall. He is a funny man!
He is so not a shiny purple lamé vest person.
