Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant/Dining Help Thread

Marshmallow is also not vegetarian according to my 13 year old vegetarian buddhist son it has gelatin in it same with the jello unless Disney has gelatin free products ????? That would be great for him us I can't wait for the crispy treats even thou I will have to listen to him lecture me as usual .

The gelatin in marshmallow or jello, just like the carageenan in vegan/vegetarian versions, is used to hold the shape, to keep it together.

A marshmallow FLAVORED thing like a topping, however, doesn't need to keep its shape. I would bet quite a bit that it's just a flavor, and not actual marshmallow*. Because if it had gelatin in it, how could it be turned into a drink topping that is freeform? Just wouldn't work. Think of what you have to do to a marshmallow to get it to mush when making s'mores? High heat, and it still tries to hold shape for quite awhile.

But Disney is really good about having ingredient lists, so this shouldn't be all that difficult to find out for certain.

deadheadmamma4, make sure he's aware that the cupcakes throughout disney (except for at Babycakes, of course), almost certainly have gelatin in them. It's used to help the whipped cream, etc, hold its shape when sitting for hours in the cases.

Sadly, I had 2 cupcakes (I was trying hard to like them) before I thought to check an ingredient list....

*I bet it's not truly true marshmallow either, which is a plant.

Thank you for mentioning the cupcakes, I thought I heard most of them had gelatin in them.....sad. I'll get other treats.
So i'm assuming the two drinks at BOG are ok, neither has a marshmallow foam, so they should be good. And like you said the other with marshmallow flavoring should be fine. Thanks!

It's definitely a theory, but one that can be checked out assuming they have the ingredient binders like CS places do.

Thank you for the cupcake update he would freak if he found out and that I new abought it .

You are welcome. I wasn't able to get anything from Boardwalk Bakery that I wanted, because everything I wanted had gelatin in it. Even the key lime pie. SO upsetting, and it's just such a cheap way of doing things.

Actually, no, that's when I got a cupcake, never thinking that it, too, had gelatin in it. (I only found out that I should check after visiting Disneyland and checking out cupcakes at Hungry Bear to see if DS could have them, and seeing the G word in there...I truly just never thought about it)

The CM that checked the other things for me must have been laughing at me as I left....assuming she knew the ingredients in the cupcake that is.

Different food: have we ever gotten a definitive answer about the french onion soup at BOG? Of course, anything could change by my trip in October, but most threads I see from people who know to ask say that it's veggie stock, but I've seen the occasional thread where someone has been told by a CM that it's not vegetarian. Anything definitive?

I apologize for interrupting the chain of the above thread. . .please feel free to resume the topic. . .

Just wanted to share a few notes from our trip last week. . .

Within a few days of us being there, the 50s Prime Time Cafe changed their vegetarian spaghetti and "meat" sauce to a vegetarian lasagna. Zucchini strips are used instead of noodles. Soy crumbles, a red pepper like sauce. . .it was pretty decent. . .but not as good as the veggie lasagna at Pop Century. . .

. . .which is now GONE??!! :( They've replaced it with a roasted vegetable noodle bake. . . (I can't remember the type noodle mentioned in the name---but corkscrew-like tubes they were. . .started with a 'c') It was pretty good actually. No soy crumbles, but some ricotta mixed in. It comes with a breadstick----but no side salad as the lasagna once did. (had to make do with the iceburg number they offer in the 'grab-n-go'. . sigh)

I also noticed Pop Century was offering a tofu and veggie dish over rice where they used to serve the veggie lo mein, but didn't have the opportunity to try it!

Thought the stone pie at Rose & Crown was really good. . .and huge?!? My husband and I ordered the potato & leek soup (tell them you are vegetarian so they know to leave the crumbled bacon off the top!)-----then we shared the cheese plate with accompaniments (loved the bleu!). We ordered one entree of the stone pie which came with watercress greens along side----cut in two, we still had a sizeable wedge of this incredibly tall creation! We also got a side of chips. . .well. . .just because we could! (Seated outside in the sunshine with a Strongbow Cider made it extra nice) This was one of my most favorite meals of the trip. . .

I mentioned in another thread that we did eat dinner at BOG. . . in brief, we both ordered the potato & leek soup (much better at Rose & Crown IMHO), the mixed greens salads, shared a ratatouille entree and ordered a side dish of the macaroni au gratin. Overall a nice meal. . .just wish there were more vegetables over the quinoa cake. . . Tried asking the server if there were other 'options' that guests may have been offered. . .but was told 'no' and directed back to the menu, more or less.

La Hacienda was another great meal----was our favorite when we tried it for the first time in the fall! I love that they have a separate vegetarian menu. The vegetable tacos with esquites (roasted corn) are wonderful---very fresh tasting. . .we also got the queso empanadas. . .with the rice and bean accompaniments, there was much to share!

Ended up at Trail's End one night. . .asked to "peek" at the buffet. . .and was pleasantly surprised and decided, "why not?". . . was able to make a really nice salad (something we had been missing all week since we usually have a big salad with dinner at home)---several vegetables. . .I loaded up on the green beans. . .had a little mac & cheese. . .cornbread. . .fruit. . . To note, there was cheese pizza, the baked potato bar, mashed potatoes, pasta with red sauce among other things. . . I guess a lot of heavy foods----but if you were smart about it, you could do quite nicely. . .

We also ate breakfast at Crystal Palace & Tusker House. . .lunch at the Plaza (Veggie Sandwich), Via Napoli x2 (Veggie Pizza)

So. . .just wanted to share about the new entree at 50s Prime. . .and changes at Pop Century. . .

Could you describe the Stone Pie? I haven't been able to find a photo or a good description of it. What is in it? Is it served hot or cold?

Thanks for your other reviews as well!

Could you describe the Stone Pie? I haven't been able to find a photo or a good description of it. What is in it? Is it served hot or cold?

I guess it would closely resemble a quiche. It did not have a traditional pie crust, however. I think it formed its own 'crust' (browning) from the baking process. It was served cold or room temp---not heated. I know it had spinach in it....but I'm sure the description mentions what else (onion and mushroom, perhaps)...to be honest, you don't really notice or taste the vegetables (which is sad)....just the eggy custardy part (very smooth texture). . . .and I want to say "cheese" is mentioned in the description, but it didn't really have a cheese flavor to me. It was easily 4 inches thick. I think consuming the entire thing would have been a bit much of the same taste and richness. I really was surprised at the portion. The watercress was tossed with a lite vinaigrette. Hope this helps a bit?

When I read my above description, it comes across sounding sort of bland and sad. . .but we did enjoy it and I would get it again.

Ooh, yum. Obviously, then that soup is vegetarian? Very cool, I don't remember reading that! Options are good. That meal sounds really tasty, and way better than both DH and I just getting the ratatouille.

Was told both potato and leek as well as the French onion at BOG were vegetarian. I asked at check in when I received the pager (asked a few questions about the menu)----as well as asked our server. I felt pretty confident in how they immediately answered that they 'knew' these options were vegetarian.

The 'soup of the day' at Rose & Crown was also potato & leek----I asked specifically if a meat based broth was used and or bacon renderings and was told it was vegetarian as long as they didn't sprinkle the bacon on top. . .

Now in both cases I did not speak directly with a chef----so I guess if you want extra proof, you could/should go that route to be double-y sure.

Thanks! The name "Stone Pie" really doesn't give any clue as to what it is and the menu description wasn't helpful either. So thank you for taking the time to describe this dish.

DD is a vegetarian and our waiter assured us both soups were a vegetarian base:)
DD had the french onion. She then consequently had the worst lactose stomach attack I've ever seen her have and spent a good 45 minutes in the bathroom from about mid-way through dinner to after we had paid the bill:worried:

I'll ask in here since this might be the best place to ask about food sensitivities. She can't have too much dairy here (Canada) but can have food with cheese or milk. But at Disney? Or really anywhere in the States.. it's horrible for her. I can't tell you how many times on vacation she's been sick to her stomach. Bad cramping, an hour in the bathroom.
Why is it worse on trips? Do you think it might be the fat content or fried food rather than the dairy? I just can't figure out what the variable is here:confused3

I know the laws for cow hormones etc. in the States are wayyyy more lenient than they are in Canada. Perhaps her sensitivity is to an obscure milk "ingredient" found in US dairy products that wouldn't be in Canadian dairy

That's so unfortunate to hear though, she must have been so frustrated to have that happen at Disney :(

Sad to hear they replaced the spaghetti at Prime Time. Enjoyed it on the last trip. The lasagna doesn't so bad so may have to give it a go.

I second your recommendation of the Stone Pie at Rosé & Crown and the chips are a must have too. My favorite meal when I was there in January. And some nice beers to go with. :)

Thanks for the updates.

Some quick news for my fellow vegans - we just came back from a quick Memorial Day Weekend trip, and we enjoyed a few noteworthy meals I wanted to pass along..........

We ate at Liberty Tree Tavern for lunch on 5/27 and had their potato quinoa veggie burger. It was really, really good! All four of us, even my picky youngest DD loved it. It is quite large and easy to share with another person. The sweet potato fries that come with it are amazing. So so nice to have a completely vegan meal "as-is" right off the menu with no special ordering required! :cool1:

We also had breakfast at Kona. After informing the waitress that we are vegan, the chef in charge of special diets came out to talk to us. He was so friendly and warm. He has a gluten-free, dairy-free baking mix he uses for waffles and pancakes, so he was able to make mickey waffles for my youngest DD, and fresh blueberry pancakes for my older DD. SO YUMMY!! No one would ever know these were vegan pancakes. So a big shout out to Kona for their veg-friendliness!! :wave2:

Has anyone had a good experience at the Luau at the Poly? Vegan options available? I am debating whether or not its worth the price if we can't eat anything. Any insight would be great....thank you :)

Here's a pic I took for the live thread back in March.:

http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=47723065&postcount=2839

The menu description is "Vegetable Stone Pie with mushrooms, onions, spinach, cheddar cheese and a side salad." I don't know why but I was expecting more of a pot pie dish, so this surprised me. It was good, but huge.
