Wow, Target is closed today

I haven't seen anyone here take a legalistic perspective. Now if someone were taking the perspective of "All businesses should be closed because it is a Holy Day , gosh darnit!", or "All businesses should be open because not everyone celebrates Easter , dag nabbit!", or "I want to shop and therefore all stores should be open for me to shop in, dang it !", then I could see why this discussion has even happened. But there's no actual argument here that I can see amongst us.

I agree no one is stomping their feet and screaming that stores should be open or closed. But that doesn't mean people haven't posted they'd like stores closed when it's important to them...

The problem is I'm old school. I liked that we were not living and breathing for the almighty dollar. You still have 363 days to get what you need. If we close under the name of Christmas or Easter don't fix it because it's not broke. It's worked for a long time. I would also like to go back to when stores were closed on Sundays. I guess I'm really dreaming.

Of course people are allowed to have preferences. I just wanted to point out there were posters that said businesses should be closed on certain days, which is contrary to what you posted.

I just find it strange all the people come out of the word work "concerned" about employees having the day off.

I'm with you on this!!

I can't believe people can feel "bad", or, "sad" or be empathetic for people or situations they know absolutely nothing about.

My wife has been in retail for over 30 years. Some of the stores she has worked in have been open Thanksgiving or Christmas or Easter. In many cases they paid the employees double time for working a holiday and they had absolutely no problem getting volunteers to work.

She had an employee request to work Easter because she wanted other specific days off this week.

Geez, everyone you see working on a holiday is not some poor sap who is miserable and worthy of being pitied.

That isn't contrary to what I posted. Tomader indicated that he (or she?) would like to go back to a time when stores were closed. Not that they MUST or SHOULD be required to be closed. Tomader even used the word dreaming in the post.

Anyone can dream and wish. They aren't writing to their congress people or even city council demanding that closing the stores become a requirement. HUGE difference in demanding and wishing. Since when are we not allowed to have dreams and wishes on a Disney board?

Nobody has an issue with any business being closed on an atypical day, for any reason. The issue is with the thought that more businesses should be closed on what is solely a religious holiday - and yes, there are several posters here with that attitude. Christmas is different. It's a legal holiday.

I wonder if Christmas would be a legal holiday if it always fell on a weekend day like Easter does. Or if Easter would be a legal holiday if it did not always fall on Sunday.

Finally! Someone whose opinion (about Target at least) actually counts. So give us the verdict. What's the majority opinion amongst you and your co-workers - being glad the store closes for Easter so you get the day off, or wishing the store was open so you could work?

We didn't even acknowledge Sunday on the schedule paper for fear that they would somehow turn it around and make us work

There was a thread about this about Black Friday, which started at some retailers at 6 am Thanksgiving Day. Folks were upset with retailers that people had to work Thanksgiving, but the stores were packed at 6 am Thanksgiving morning, so clearly the customers wanted them open then.

Not Federal law for sure, a few states still have blue laws. I think every car but one I have bought I bought on a Sunday.

Growing up and watching Let's Make a Deal, where they would announced the "manufactuers suggested retail price"......which was what they HAD to sell it for by law in those days, so every store had the same price....those laws went away too.

That would be nice except places such as where I work wouldn't allow us to take those days except on really bad business days. Plus they would be shorthanded on the days they are open. It's easier for them to just shut down completely rather than try to schedule days off for umpteen zillion employees and then deal with possible being swamped by fewer employees being there. They have enough trouble with vacations.

I say leave well enough alone. A good friend that I work with who happens to be from India and doesn't celebrate Christmas told me that he is thrilled with getting Christmas off. All of his kids also get the day off and they enjoy spending time together so why ruin that?

Actually, the companies that have moved away from sick/vacation/holiday time and gone with the pooled time off say they do it because it allows them to spread time off over the whole year, but I suspect they are open holidays.
My industry has the added issue of not allowing time off in February, May, July and November because it's ratings. We get 8 holidays, 4 of which fall in months where time off is forbidden.

I know our Target, Kohls & B.J.'s was closed for Easter 2012, don't remember before that.

In Minnesota car dealers and liquor stores are closed on Sundays and have been forever.

I worked overnight stock at Target from 2002 to 2009. The store was always closed on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The overnight team worked all of those nights. I don't think we worked Christmas Eve night, but I worked many times the days before Easter and Thanksgiving. I would get off work at 5:30am, go home and sleep a bit and then spend the holiday with my family. It sucked and I don't miss it, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I know many Targets have switched to a 4am start for the stocking crew, but I don't know what they do for the holidays now.

I'm Jewish and was raised with the Jewish faith, however celebrated both as my father is not Jewish. Easter Sunday for me was "just another Sunday" as some put it due to family stuff. It also happened to be my brother's birthday we tried to go out to celebrate and everything was closed. I do not have a problem with stores closing so people can observe their religious beliefs and be with their family. Where my problems lies is the fact that I have to take off from work for my holidays (so I loose double pay since my job is closed on Christian holidays), take off from school (for the longest time my school district didn't close and now I face that with graduate school) and not get the same respect. This past Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur I almost wasn't allowed to have off from work and was almost fired for not being there yet my boss (who isn't very religious may I add) takes every single holiday off. I feel if a store wants to respect one religion than all religions should be respected. Perhaps not every holiday but certainly the most religious from each. America was founded with immigrants and was once called the "melting pot" yet we focus our school vacations, store hours etc upon one religion. Again I am NOT saying it was wrong to close just would be nice for respect all around.

'm really surprised that, in NY, your schools don't close for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I was speaking with someone yesterday who said that they usually got 2 days off for each when she was growing up in NY. Around here, in NJ, we get 1 day off for each. I agree with you, though, that employees should be allowed time off for religious observances. Every company I've worked for does.

Now they do when I was in middle school and high school they did however there were years in elementary school where they didn't close. Before I started school my mom said she would have to take off from work, she works in a school. Nowadays the students get off though.
