I'm so upset, I could cry :(

I know...I'm definitely trying to look on the bright side! And if she has to leave early, that's much better than her not being able to go at all! I just worry about my mom, you'd have to know her to understand, but she isn't the most worldly person. And I think the terminal train would scare her to figure out by herself. I would just make sure when we arrive that she pays close attention to it, instead of just following me around. We fly into Bradley so that would be a cinch, even for her.

Have her buddy up with a family or someone that gets on the magical express with her. Explain that its only her second time flying and first time alone could they just direct her or let her tag along. I know I wouldn't mind doing that for someone in this situation. Just a thought.

So I just talked to my mom, and.................the lady who makes the decision isn't in the office today! Ack! It's going to be a looooooonnnngggggg day :(.

I REALLY appreciate everybody's advice though! Definitely helps to know that we won't be out too much money if she has to leave early. My one main concern about that now is just that my mom is 69, and has only flown once...with me to WDW in 2010. I can't imagine her navigating MCO by herself, and I'd be very worried about her doing that. I guess I'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I don't think I'd want to change my and the kids plane tickets to come back on Wednesday either, but we shall see. I'm still hoping they just give her the whole time!

It WILL be approved, and all of this will be for not. I can feel it!

I have a lot of respect for your mother that she is 69 and still working hard. It's unfortunate that at her age she still has to wait for someone to approve if she gets to take a vacation with her family.

Prayers that it all gets approved.

Aw! That's sweet...you just brought tears to my eyes. This is so true. I wish she could have retired a long time ago,,but it just wasn't in the cards for her. Her life has been far from easy, so if there is anyone who deserves this vacation, it's her ! Thanks for the prayers.

Prayers and Pixie Dust your way! And your Mom's way! AND especially the decision making lady's way that she will do the Right Thing and realize things will not cease to exist if 1) your mom takes her well deserved vacation with her family and 2) if she comes back as planned and not a day early!

Pixie Dust to you!!

My father is 70 and still works so I totally understand life circumstances when it comes to our parents. He's going on his first trip to Disney May 2013.

Good for him! Wishing him the happiest trip! Hopefully he'll get to retire soon too. My mom has until July 2015.

I had that happen to me 2007 when I requested vacation time for a trip to Disney with my daughter and grandchildren. She had two girls ages 8 and 3 and a 10 month old son at the time and really needed my help as she couldn't be waiting with the littlest one and letting both or one ride alone.
My boss told me that I couldn't get the time off as I had just taken vacation time the previous Nov and it was too soon and wasn't fair to other employees who had to cover for me.
Well my answer to them was to move my retirement up a little early. I had planned to retire that Nov. after I turned 60 as hubby was retiring in April and we were planning a 28 day cruise to celebrate. When I came home and told him what my employer had said, he told me that we would just switch retirement months. So I retired just before going to Disney and he retired just before our cruise which actually worked out better as he hit his 40th anniversary with the company just days before he retired.
I hope everything works out as well for you and your mother as our little "hitch" ending up working out great for us.

I *LOVE* this story. Absolutely LOVE it. What's extra sweet about it is that rather than just giving you the time off, you got the time off anyway, and by moving up your retirement, I'm assuming they probably had to pay out any unused vacation in cash. You won the day in two ways. Considering how most outfits are desperate to get people to burn vacation, I'm surprised he didn't let you do it the way you wanted originally.

Great, great story.

Here's hoping all works out well for the OP's mom.

I was going to suggest the same thing. People are pretty nice overall and if someone asked me something like this I would do all I could to help.

So, I FINALLY have an update! It's been a LONG couple of days, but her supervisor told her today that she can go, but her vacation "isn't approved," so it will reflect in her yearly review. I think they're just trying to stick it to her because that's how her boss is (I used to work for her so I know this!). Anyway, we are relieved and SUPER excited! My mom isn't worried about her evaluation, she's really a great employee so this is the only bad thing they'll be able to say about her. Plus, she is retiring July 2014 (I typed it in wrong earlier), so this will be her last review anyway. She's happy. I'm happy. Thank goodness! And thanks for all the Pixie Dust...I'm sure that had something to do with this outcome!! Now, back to planning and being excited!!

Yay! I'm so happy she can go! And seriously, any "boss" who is going to give a 69 year old woman who is 16 months out from retirement a hard time over a family vacation has some real issues. Just be glad you are not her :rotfl:

Enjoy your trip!

NEVER underestimate the power of pixie dust! ;) So happy for you! Does she get to stay the whole time?

Glad your mom can go and now it's only 16 months before she can tell her boss where to shove it!! :thumbsup2

Oh what wonderful news! So glad it worked out. The evaluation well who cares?!? She's retiring and not looking for a promotion. Have a great trip
