City, Sand, and Savanna - Link to new trip report

That is a beautiful picture of the chandelier. Lovely! GF tea always looks so fun. Someday I will try it. If for no other reason but to see a real live sugar cube. It's been forever.

The one thing I remember about Kidani is that it was always freezing in the hallway after getting out of the pool, so I don't blame you for high-tailing it back to the room as fast as possible. :rotfl:

LOTS OF JUDIES!!!!! :yay: WHAT DO I WIN? :confused3

Great update! How fun that you and James were able to let go and just have some fun making memories and making words!:cool1: That's what vacation is all about!

Looks like the ladies had a wonderful tea! Fantastic Pinkie Perfectness! :goodvibes I love to look around at GF!

It wasn’t too long before James realized that he’d forgotten his goggles and wanted to go back to the room to get them, and wanted me to go with him. With our room being situated at the other end of Kidani, over near Jambo House, it was a pretty long hike. We made short work of it by running most of the way. And by “running”, I mean an all-out sprint. I’m not sure how it started exactly, probably James started jogging and I ran to catch up to him and he stepped on the gas in order to stay ahead. But however it started, before long we were running full-speed, barefoot, down the carpeted hallways, hoping that we didn’t run into anyone.

Didn't your parents tell you no running in the halls?

:rotfl:

On the way back to the pool I said something about my room key, and listening to myself in the midst of this African-themed resort I thought, “that sounds like an African word”, so ‘my room key’ became ‘maroomkie’. (Accent on the second syllable.) We decided that it was a Swahili word meaning a tool to allow someone access through a door: maroomkie.

maroomkie. I love that!

Yes, lying down makes a huge difference. That slide is FAST! Great slide.

I can't believe they'd never been into the GF before, how very fun. The tea is just lovely, I'm glad they were able to do it.

Before they left the Grand Floridian, they looked around the shops and Judy found Basin. She got a bar of laundry soap, a spot-treatment called the “Spot Doctor”, which she loves. Its claim is that there’s no spot it can’t get out, and so far it’s held true, from her experience.

On the way out, they noticed the Beauty and the Beast themed sections of the floor. Here’s Chip.

And Mrs. Potts.

2012-06-25162945.jpg

I need to check some of that spot remover out, I'd never have thought to look at Basin for something like that.

That part of the floor is one of my very favorite things there!

I have always wanted to do the Grand Floridian tea/ I thought it would cost more, but it doesn't look too bad. Maybe DD and I will try it next trip.

I guess it depends on how you look at it...Mark (Capt. Oblivious) thought it looked pretty pricey for just some tea and little sandwiches. For the location and ambience, I think it's not too bad of a splurge. I think it was worth it for the memories they made.

In the teapot !!! I see Judy in the Tea pot !!! Honestly I think my eyes are popping outta my head from oogling each pix !!!:rotfl2::rotfl2:And I stil wanna know how Marv's knows ;):rotfl2:

:rotfl2: Which tea pot exactly? Mrs. Potts?

Great Update! It sounds like had a good time at the pool, and mastered the art of the pool slide! :cool2:

I'm not sure what happened. I didn't need remedial training before! :lmao:

Those pictures of GF are great! I love the elevator it looks so fancy! Actually everything at the GF looks fancy. I really want to have tea there now. I'll have to wait till I have a daughter or till I convince my mom to come with us one year, because there is no way I can convince DH to do this with me.

Yeah, I imagine your hubby would rather do something else. I hope that you can go with your mom someday (or a future daughter?!)...I'm sure that'd be a really nice time.

I can't wait to find out where the reflection Judy is. Clearly I need to have my eyes checked because I don't see any of them!!

Okay, here's the reveal:

The one I was asking people to find, which Marv did, was a reflection in the telephone. You can see Lauren taking the picture, and Judy and Marlene on either side of her.

Marv also noticed that you can see a reflection of Judy's green dress in the legs of the serving tray-thingee that's behind her and Gram in picture #11 (the first picture of them in the Garden View Tea Room).

Marv invents the reflections and then convinces everyone they are there :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

That may be true sometimes, but the phone one I saw when I posted the chapter and he did send me a pm when he found it.

See Glenn, I told you somebody would incorrectly say that green reflection in the piano top was from Judy's dress............. :rolleyes1

You did.

Rosie, I always knew you were an old...........oh wait, that was a "T" wasn't it???

Careful!

Who? Me??? Not me..... :sad1:

Okay.....Okay..... :guilty:

:rotfl2:

:woohoo: I'm Glenn's favorite!!! :cool1:  :sad2:

Everybody always thinks the refs are on the other teams' side.

Not to mention it is a left hand and since Judy is to Gram's left, and she is taking the picture with probably her right hand (since most camera's have the button slanted towards right-handed users), that would be one heck of a contortion Judy would have had to pull off to reach across her self, avoid the arm of the fancy shmancy chair, and turn her hand over in that direction to hold the plate.......while taking the picture. :sad2:

Yes, she would've been quite contorted if she'd held the plate and the camera.

Wow, you really should be nicer to Rosie every now and then......:rolleyes1

I'll follow your example. ;)

You would think but until recently I steered away from the pools. Too much like work.

Now lately I am RUNNING AWAY from pools especially my own. :scared1: :sad2:

Very understandable!

And then you feel even more thirsty since you know it is closed. ::yes::

So true!

Perfectly legal.... and virtually undetectable if done right. :thumbsup2

Nah really - not lifting anything up really just becomming more aerodynamic, or hydrodynamic???

I'm not sure of the physics involved, but I can tell you that it's waaaay faster.

Expain that to anyone who visits - yeah we LOVE the chandelier, please use the back door since you fit through the front.

Exactly!

No one ever accepts my explanations !!!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

:sad2:

Running through the hallways sounds hilarious. Really getting that cardio in there aren't you?:rotfl:

Some of the cardio was even intended. Some just kind of happened that way.

I love ‘maroomkie’. I wonder how many other 'authentic' names you could come up with like that...

I don't know...as I sit here and try, nothing comes to mind. I think it might have to be one of those things that you just hear.

That is such a lovely photo of the girls enjoying their tea! Definitely frame worthy!

Aw thanks. I'm glad that they got to enjoy that afternoon like that.

All that fancy food looks delicious! I just love the swan so much!

I have no idea what kind of sandwiches they had. I think there is pb&j included in the Princess Tea party.

It's just not high tea without the pinkies out. Good thing Marlene had that covered :thumbsup2

They might have gotten kicked out of the place if Marlene hadn't classed it up the way she did. ;)

That is a beautiful picture of the chandelier. Lovely! GF tea always looks so fun. Someday I will try it. If for no other reason but to see a real live sugar cube. It's been forever.

Yeah, I don't think I've seen a sugar cube since I was a kid. They were fun to dunk and eat by themselves! I'm pretty sure Marlene and Lauren had never seen one.

The one thing I remember about Kidani is that it was always freezing in the hallway after getting out of the pool, so I don't blame you for high-tailing it back to the room as fast as possible. :rotfl:

I don't remember that, but you may be right -- that may have been the reason we started running.

LOTS OF JUDIES!!!!! :yay: WHAT DO I WIN? :confused3

:yay: I just gave you a round of applause. Don't spend it all in one place.

Great update! How fun that you and James were able to let go and just have some fun making memories and making words!:cool1: That's what vacation is all about!

:goodvibes

Looks like the ladies had a wonderful tea! Fantastic Pinkie Perfectness! :goodvibes I love to look around at GF!

They did! They really enjoyed getting all gussied up and having tea in a fancy place.

I am waiting for an update so I can be first !!! Marv stay away !!!:rotfl2:You know the way you do from your own TR!!!:lmao::lmao:

Marv is liable to swoop in. You never know.

Didn't your parents tell you no running in the halls?

That may have come up in conversation, once or twice. But they weren't nearby, so...

maroomkie. I love that!

Thanks! Feel free to use it. And see what looks you get!

Yes, lying down makes a huge difference. That slide is FAST! Great slide.

I remembered it being a good slide, and then I had a lousy run. I guess I just forgot how to do it. Duh.

I can't believe they'd never been into the GF before, how very fun. The tea is just lovely, I'm glad they were able to do it.

By this point in the TR, I still had never been inside the place, but I remedy that later.

I need to check some of that spot remover out, I'd never have thought to look at Basin for something like that.

She really likes it. It's worked wonders on a couple of items.

That part of the floor is one of my very favorite things there!

Very cool. I wonder how much it costs to cut custom figures in marble flooring like that?

Okay Glenn I am back !!Where's the update !!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Update? What update?

Now I know he has a magnifing glass of super strength to see any reflections in either of those mentioned !!!;):rotfl2:

:magnify:

When the ladies got back from the Grand Floridian, they told us all about the nice time they had at the Tea, and I tried to take some notes on what they did and what tea they had. Other than that, we just took it easy and enjoyed animal watching from the balcony.

This picture was taken at 6 pm.

IMG_6064.jpg

And this one was taken at 6:30&so I guess we just hung out for a while.

IMG_6066.jpg

James and I went down to Community Hall and played Tron on the Wii. Around 7:30, Judy called me to tell me that shed cooked a frozen pizza and it was ready, so we went back to grab some dinner. After that, we did some laundry and folded the ponchos that wed hung on the doors to dry.

I went down to Joharis to buy a post card stamp and while I was down there I stepped out to the animal viewing area. It was really nice out and animals were bedding-down, so I decided that it was time to break out the night vision goggles once I got back to the room to see what critters were out down at our end of the savanna. When I got to the room, the kids said that there were giraffes right outside our window. I quickly got the night vision goggles working, and we had fun passing them around for everyone to see. I think my dad kind of enjoyed trying out the new technology, and they worked fairly well for something at the lower-end of the price range. I figured that we wouldnt be able to see out very far into the savanna with them, but they did fine for the giraffes that were nearby.

Since the giraffes were being so still, I thought Id try taking a picture using the tripod. I started out by trying a 10 second exposure time.

IMG_6068.jpg

These were taken at about 9:40 pm, so it was plenty dark out, but I didnt use any flash. I just counted on getting enough light with the long amount of time that the shutter was open, and that the giraffes would hold still. I tried reducing the exposure time a little. This one was for 8 seconds.

IMG_6070.jpg

I put the zoom lens on and dialed the exposure time down to 4 seconds.

IMG_6073.jpg

IMG_6076.jpg

It was now almost 10 oclock and everybody else was getting ready for bed, but since I had the camera all set up on the tripod I thought Id go down to the firepit and see what pictures I could get.

I started by setting up near the firepit, shooting back toward the lobby window. For this one, the shutter was open for 2.5 seconds.

IMG_6082.jpg

Then I experimented taking pictures of the fire. I tried different exposure times, and with using the flash or not. I think my favorite is the 1/6 of a second, no flash.

1/13 of a second, no flash.

IMG_6083.jpg

1/5 of a second, no flash.

IMG_6084.jpg

1/6 of a second, no flash.

IMG_6085.jpg

1 second, with flash.

IMG_6088.jpg

1/3 second, with flash.

IMG_6089.jpg

5 seconds, with flash.

IMG_6090.jpg

While I was taking those, a young boy, probably 8 or 10 years old came over to watch me. Im sure he thought I was crazy.

Then I moved over to try another shot of the lobby window. 1.3 second exposure.

IMG_6091.jpg

I tried to get artsy by getting low and taking a picture of the chair with the window behind it. 2 second exposure. I wish the chair had been in focus. Stupid chair. ;)

IMG_6098.jpg

Then I took a closeup of the chair with a 3.2 second exposure.

IMG_6099.jpg

And the Lobby window, a little closer. 3.2 second exposure.

IMG_6102.jpg

From there, I moved up to the balcony animal-viewing location to take a picture of the library, with a 1.3 second exposure.

IMG_6106.jpg

It was kind of funny, because there was a big ugly blower in there, in that space between the table and the light in the foreground. I guess theyd gotten rainwater in there with all the rain wed had and they were trying to dry the place out. Well, it wasnt running when I was there and I didnt want it in my picture, so I moved it out of the frame, and then moved it back after I was done.

After that, I thought that Id go out front and take another picture of the porte cochere, like what Id taken a few years ago. I started out with an exposure time of 3.2 seconds. Someone was sitting near the doors, but that was okay since this was just a test shot.

IMG_6109.jpg

I tried reducing it to 2 seconds, but got some ghostly images as people walked through.

IMG_6112.jpg

This next one was a 1 second exposure, and that gave me the warm colors that I was looking for, but I still had people in the picture. It was just too busy of a night to take pictures out front.

IMG_6113.jpg

It was going on 11 oclock by this point, so I gave up and went to bed.

For comparison, heres the one I took back in 2009. I guess I took the picture from just a little bit closer.
