Horse Owners: A place for us on the Dis

I don't own a horse....maybe one day.

My cousin owns horse farms in central Florida and western NJ. They compete in jumping & polo.
Just visiting there is a mini vacation. They are such beautiful animals.

I learned to ride on a sweet Palomino named Queenie she was such a lovely girl.
We are in Western NJ, where are your cousins? I live in North Warren. We have horses and there is a 50 acre standardbred farm across the street from us.

The best way to keep it from being stolen at a show is to leave it hitched to your truck. ;) ...of course, that isn't always practical. But I suggest a lock that goes over the receiver instead of the wheel.

Alas, no LQ yet so have to have the truck for meals and hotels. :drive:

I had thought the kind you mentioned would be best, but I haven't come across one yet - just need to spend more time looking, I guess. Thanks!

Welcome ! I'm curious about the one in central FL Are they far from WDW ?
'm trying to picture where

Whoo-hoo! I received an email congratulating me on passing my first Parelli audition (Level 1, Online). I submitted my video in Dec filmed with my mare who, just a year ago, was a hot, rearing, emotional mess following double arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from her front fetlock joints. While it took me a full year to get a presentable audition, her performance was lovely: calm, connected, focused and (mostly) obedient. We had one major refusal in the film, but we were still passed with a "1++" score.

I'm so thrilled at the progress she has made. :)

I'm thrilled for you both & so glad she has recovered so well !

Now tell me what it all means, are you going for Parelli certification to be a trainer instructor? So happy for you
:cool1: would love to see pics what's her name ?

LOL! Sure, that was the plan when I first registered on this site. We figured we knew exactly what we wanted (BWV, 200 pts, Dec UY) but our

resale attempts kept falling through. We ended up buying direct (SSR, 150 pts, Oct UY) instead. How we got from BWV-resale to SSR-direct is a long story but we've been content with the outcome. Although we've stayed at most of the DVC properties, we use BWV more than any other due to our conference activities at the Swan, Dolphin and Yacht Club.

so since we were talking about Saratogs Springs Resort my curiousity finally got the better of me & I went to check it out OMGoodness ! I don't know the whole renting\ buying points thing works but I would very much like to stay there
Of course I immediately felt right at home seeing the New York State flag flying

Took a look in Turf Bar & Grill loved the whole equestrian decor and the old historical
paintings and prints from NY got a real kick out of the framed jockey silks especially the one with Mickey Mouse print

That statute of the horse & jockey in the winners circle next time I bring a camera
But $32. for NY strip steak ? not my budget !
:sad2:

I'll PM you not comfortable posting it here.
Fair enough. :thumbsup2

And I still need to post my girlies up here and of course my fuzzy little man. My farrier was this weekend and she couldn't believe how fuzzy he truly is. And he has this little turnout rug on. I love my mini.

Thank you!

We are now home from our wonderful vacation in South Africa. Saw lots of wildlife ... up close, on the roads, often without any other car around to crowd us. It was an awesome trip!

My mare is Easter Lady. Sorry, I don't have any photos loaded in spots with public access. Easter is a smaller Standardbred (14.3h if I fluff the mane just a tad) with slender legs; coloring is dark bay with black points; her eyes are large and expressive; her ears a bit oversized; her legs show a smidge of fringe/feathering at the fetlocks; her summer coat is a very short/fine hair showing a dark golden mottled pattern if the sun hits it just right. She loves to move her feet (more 'go' than 'whoa'), is mouthy, playful, teasing, intuitive , curious and often asks if she may, please, be the boss.

I've been taking the Parelli courses (online, DVD, live events) in order to stay a few steps ahead of Easter. Compared to my compliant, complacent, "I-just-want-to-stand-still-and-smell-the-flowers" gelding, she is pushing me to up my game! So far, the program has improved my skills in reading the horse, increased clarity in my communications, taught me when to release, and supplied me with lots of learning games to play with both horses every visit. I'll keep taking the assessments (auditions) to make sure we aren't skipping components of our progress.

I'm currently working on improving our sideways from the ground with increasingly subtle gestures. I've also started to ask her to move sideways over an obstacle (ground pole, barrels, etc.). We should have already perfected backing through a gate (on the ground w/out touching her) -- but that is still causing a few responses of uncertainty. It is getting better ... phew!

If nothing else, it is fun to watch bystander's expressions when they see me backing both horses out the barn, at the same time, each on about 8ft of lead away from my body, with a simple wiggle of my finger and stern expression on my face. Both horses respect my space and are (mostly) watchful for my cues. That feels great!

I have a message from RuthIE (luvchefmic): She was injured at work Tuesday night . She was thrown from a vehicle and broke her right shoulder and sprained her left wrist! She's at home but is in a lot of serious pain and unable to do the simplest of things. She's asked for our prayers that she will heal quickly and find someone to help with her pets. She's very worried about her horse as well as her dogs. I will update for her as soon as she shares more with me. Have a great day! Ruth

Has everyone seen the 2013 Budweiser commercial for this year's Super Bowl? If not, go to Youtube and find it. I've watched it several times and keep crying over it. I'm such a sap. It has to be their best one yet!!!
