Horse Owners: A place for us on the Dis

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year..better late than never!!! Here's to a wonderful, wonderful 2013!!!

Candy Canes! Doh! Why didn't I think of that ... right, I've been walking past gobs in the stores. Oh, well.

Farrier: Met with a new-my-herd fella yesterday. I hated to leave my prior farrier, but things just haven't been working out for the past few months. :confused3 Both horses were well behaved and showed no objection to the new guy. All feet looked great by the end of the visit. I had hoped to ride today but got caught up with lots of "please do this favor for me before you leave for vacation" requests. I've been alternating between battling emails, packing, running last minute errands. Maybe I can slip away for a ride in the morning -- I sure hope so.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Not a horse owner but I have a little story.

I was in Walmart yesterday and the family behind me was buying many, many cases of candy canes. I finally asked what was up with all the candy canes and they told me they were treats for their horses. I knew horses liked sugar but mint too? Lucky horses.

DD gives her horse a peppermint after every riding lesson. :goodvibes

She rode the owner's $30,000 show horse tonight during her lesson and the entire time I was thinking, "please don't let anything happen to the horse, please don't let anything happen to the horse, please don't let anything happen to the horse!!" :scared:

I wasn't the least bit worried about DD.

bwvBound have a wonderful vacation hope u get that ride in glad I wasn't the only one who learned abt candy canes we all sing Duh ! together :rotfl2:

SaraJayne Oh I can so relate when I lived in NY I worked for a pretty famous school of horsemanship they were also a breeding farm and homr to champions worth like a millon When I had to walk them out for turnout esp in winter I would pray Lord i( anyone falls & breaks a leg let it be me thankfully it never happened but boy stress !

I was looking through old posts when I was here before and it seems I posted here in 2010 - LOL. Well we went from horse leasing to outright ownership. Unfortunately the lease didn't work out for many reasons (we even left that barn) - but everything worked out for the best and we now have a 7yr old OTTB who was rescued from a kill pen at an auction - and he is boarded at a fantastic barn where we are super happy. He's been rehabilitated and he is awesome - I'm just as smitten with him as my daughter is. I even started taking lessons and I ride now with my daughter (it's never too late to start). We had the opportunity to do a show last summer where my daughter won a ribbon. It's been a great turn of events!

Congrats to all involved! I have two OT Trotters (Standardbred). More than a few folks have commented that both horses seem to understand what grace has been extended to them in the next-chance careers. I'm sure yours does also.

My daughter recently bought a new horse. I won't say what he cost, but he was listed at one point for $60,000. She did NOT pay anywhere near that!

Eight days after the horse arrived at the trainer's barn, he tore skin and meat off the back of his front leg (from just above the fetlock down to the hoof). :faint:

It was just a freak accident. Fortunately, the worst he did to the tendons or ligaments was one slight nick. He's been recuperating since September. The hide is almost completely back now but will be scarred. Thank goodness for Shapley's!

The expensive ones always hurt themselves!!

I've got a question. We have a gooseneck trailer. While it doesn't have LQ and isn't brand new, it is just the type of trailer that could be stolen and turned over very quickly. We regularly have people ask to buy it.

My daughter has been working back into showing the last year or so, and we've discovered that quite a few of the big shows are having a lot of theft issues now unfortunately. I'm going to find a lock for the trailer and am looking for suggestions. I saw one that went on the wheel (covered all the lug nuts so the wheel couldn't be removed).

Any suggestions to save me some time researching? :listen:

This is the first horse she's bought herself, and she was so excited about getting him here. They had been looking for awhile, and he was just what she wanted. This put them about 4 months behind schedule, but it could have been a lot worse.

BWVBound- guessing yours is BWV ?
LOL! Sure, that was the plan when I first registered on this site. We figured we knew exactly what we wanted (BWV, 200 pts, Dec UY) but our resale attempts kept falling through. We ended up buying direct (SSR, 150 pts, Oct UY) instead. How we got from BWV-resale to SSR-direct is a long story but we've been content with the outcome. Although we've stayed at most of the DVC properties, we use BWV more than any other due to our conference activities at the Swan, Dolphin and Yacht Club.

The best way to keep it from being stolen at a show is to leave it hitched to your truck. ;) ...of course, that isn't always practical. But I suggest a lock that goes over the receiver instead of the wheel.

I don't own a horse....maybe one day.

My cousin owns horse farms in central Florida and western NJ. They compete in jumping & polo.
Just visiting there is a mini vacation. They are such beautiful animals.

I learned to ride on a sweet Palomino named Queenie she was such a lovely girl.
