Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

This was my story last year. I started Couch 2 5K in March of 2011 and signed up for the Disney World Half for 2012 as incentive to stick with it. It worked.

This year I am going for Pluto pluto: - 5K on Friday and 1/2 on Saturday :) It's my name for that race combination and I'm going to continue to use it until it catches on :)

The Pluto works for me!

I will probably regret saying this after the marathon, but as some have mentioned, I'll be a little happier for weather on the warmer side. This fall, as it turned colder, I just was never comfortable on my longer runs in the cold. I just felt too chilled most of the run. If I could drop 10 degrees off the start and finish temps, then bring in some clouds, that would be about perfect. But the current forecast will do. :-)

Hello everyone!

Just popping in to say Hi... I'm a bit late to the party, but DH and I are heading in for the races. DH is doing the full and I'm doing the half (severely undertrained, but hoping adrenaline and pixie dust will get me to the finish). We are staying at Pop so hoping to catch the WISH meet.

Good luck and safe travels to all!

Well here I am, less than one week away before my first half-marathon ever. Back in March of last year I couldn't even run 30 seconds without being winded! Just got back from a 6 mile run after work and feels great! Am super nervous about being able to finish as I am somewhat undertrained to run the entire thing non-stop but knowing I have the option of walking intermittently if I get winded is reassuring. ...

And that was me in 2009/2010! I did C25K in early 2009, and the 2010 WDW Half was my first. I remember losing two weeks of training due to illness and injury. And my longest run was about 11 miles in early December. But I did it! And that was the freezing year. This will be a boiling year. lol

Good luck you guys!

Leaving on a jet plane in a few hours. :) Long trip from Seattle. :faint: I haven't been able to run for the past week or so. I've been fighting off the flu and left work early yesterday and went to bed. I feel better this morning than I have since NYE, so I may have staved it off. More advil for me!

I usually run with my iphone, as I am usually on call, and it has all my music. I was worried about it running out of battery life during the marathon, and I have asked a few people to send me encouraging messages I can pick up if I am flagging (race course etiquette followed of course!). I also need to connect with a few people before and after the race.

Bought a portable battery charger and am feeling relieved. I am planning on running with a Nathan hydration pack, so I can just tuck it in there in a plastic bag and use it if necessary. Especially with the heat I want to be able to drink often and small amounts and not be limited to drinking what is on the course and taking larger drinks less often.

Happy that my planning is coming together. Wednesday is packing day and we are leaving Thursday after lunch!

I would suggest discintinuing the day before the race if you have not by then.

Safe Travels

What happens if you get called in at mile 12?

3 1/2 more work days! Well, more like 3 1/4 at this point but who's counting? ME!

I had my first half marathon dream/nightmare last night. For some reason I was running in a race the weekend before the Disney half with the intention of breaking 2 hours so I could just take it easy for the Disney half. Well, of course this dream/nightmare race was more nightmare than dream. It was almost like we were running through an old frontier town but we were running through the buildings. There were huge back-ups at the doors in and out of buildings and at one point they had a race official making us wait 30 seconds between each person allowed through one of the doors to spread us out a bit. I woke up just as I hit a huge back-up at the finish line. I'm guessing I didn't hit my time goal for that race :headache:

So my frustration with the warmer temps is definitely presenting itself during my dream time! I would love for it to be at least 10 degrees cooler at the start but as we get closer it looks like that's not happening. We'll see if I stick with my goal of under 2 hours. I finished the Detroit half at 29 seconds over 2 hours so under 2 should be possible for this race with it being a bit flatter, just not at temps that are 15-20 degrees warmer than the Detroit half was

No. After the holding pen and the hundreds there, there is a block of 10 or so on Woodpecker Lane (the initial road we take out of the parking lot) , then 20-30 as we hit Epcot Drive. Then about that many at the back end of the corrals

[ADDED] http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/fullscreen/163859656/ - Change to the satellite layer and you can see the 2012 finish and family reunion areas

Map from staging area to corrals. PoP locations approximate and will vary from year to year

Don't forget about the dozens of people (men and women alike) who will be using the side of the road as a PoP as they walk to their corral.

Dozens? Hundreds... Plus off in the canal on the right side of the corrals where the rule of thumb is guys on the high bank and ladies near the water/gators. Then there is the mass wave of folks who run off course right just after the start line. Creates one of the wirdest optical illusions.

Dozens? Hundreds... .

Yeah, you're right. I was trying to be conservative and not scare the first timers.

I am from New Orleans and been to many a Mardi Gras. I graduated from LSU and still have season tickets to LSU football games where tailgating wasn't invented, but was certainly perfected.

I am used to seeing some odd things, but nothing could have prepared me for that.

:hyper:

Last TM run..DONE!
Online checkin...DONE!
Massage this afternoon.
Long stretch tomorrow.
4-5 mile outdoor MP run Wed.

A little work to take care of and only one meeting Thursday and then pack! That should be easy...looks like I won't need much to wear. Oh, it's going to be hot, don't forget the sunscreen!

I thought it was hot last year, no clouds, no breeze. I started drinking the sports drink around mile 13 and I train with water and had no problem. It is watered down. I will have my handheld.

I was able to see my waiver too, so hopefully they have those bugs worked out. I'm getting so excited now! And nervous!!
