We always enjoy Flying Fish so were looking forward to our dinner here. It was pouring outside so we walked round as quickly as possible and arrived around 15 mins early. We were told they were running behind but were actually seated 5 minutes later.
We were given a nice 4 top by window, our server took a while to greet us but when he did it was with a complimentary glass of champagne so all was forgiven!
To drink we both ordered wine flights,I had the pinot noir and DH the italian. They were good 2oz pours and a nice selection, and they were served with a little card explaining the three wines.
To start I chose the tuna tartare on tuna tempura roll. This was wonderful, fresh tuna tartare, topped with spicy wasabi cream and crunchy roe sitting on a Tempura roll with very thin tempura batter, cooked tuna, avocado, and well seasoned sushi rice. Definitely the best appetiser of the trip.
DH chose the crispy rice crusted maine lobster served with rock shrimp and asian vegetables. Again this was very good, soft lobster, thin rice coating, spicy shrimp cooked well, served in a coconut, ginger and lemongrass based broth. A unique appetiser packed with flavour.
My entree was the potato crusted red snapper, on buttered leeks and red wine veal glace. This was good, the snapper was very well cooked, meaty, flaky and very moist. The potato crust was thin and tasted similar to roast potato, the red wine sauce very silky and has a strong wine flavour, but the leeks were a little undercooked meaning they were slightly chewy. It had been sat under a heat lamp for a few minutes so the sauce had formed a skin, (I saw the runner had brought our entrees out but as our appetiser dishes were still on the table took them back to the kitchen), it didnt affect the flavour of the dish, only the presentation.
DH had Hawaiian monchong, very nice white fish, with a citrus crust. This was beautifully cooked, meaty, very moist, the crust had a strong citrus flavour but didnt overpower fish. It was served with a selection of vegetables, brussel sprouts, baby carrots, baby turnips (all nicely cooked, soft with a little crunch)
My dessert was the trio of boardwalk concessions- popcorn mousse (firm but smooth texture, good popcorn flavour, topped with caramel popcorn); pound cake fries cute but not a lot of taste; whoopie pie ( good, thick peanut butter filling, soft chocolate cake) and a Cherry lime popsicle (very strong lime flavour, meaning it was very sour but refreshing after the other two sweet elements). Overall I thought this was a good dessert, the presentation was fantastic and the flavours were good.
DH chose the Pecan Apple Blondie tart. This was basically a good homemade apple pie, buttery pastry, nice pecan and apple filling, crunchy crust on top, topped with candied orange and toffee ice cream.
DH also had an espresso martini with dessert. This was good but had a very strong coffee flavour, DH loved it but it was too strong for me.
We both really enjoyed our meal here, the appetisers were the stars of the show, but we enjoyed all three courses, and remains high on our list of Disney Restaurants.
