I know every person is different, but I had a question for the experienced run/walk crew out there. I've toyed with the run/walk run on the treadmill some for really long runs, but this weekend I'm hitting the road. The longest continuous run I've ever done was 8.5 miles. I've done 11+ miles running 5 and walking 1 (averaging about 10mm). I'd like to keep my times around that 10mm mark.
Is it too much to expect to do 10-12 miles this weekend at that pace during my first attempt on the road. I'd really like to get that much mileage in (if possible). Should I possibly increase my walking time to accomodate or should I just try it and see how I do?
I'm thinking of not hurting myself as much as I'm thinking of distance.
If you really want the distance, I'd go out and try to stick with same intervals you've been doing, but not worry so much about the pace. I suspect you may find it's about the same, maybe even a little faster. Some people are faster on the TM, some are faster on the road. Where I definitely felt the difference (especially at higher mileages) was in the rest of my body the next day. There's a significant difference in the overall pounding that your body takes between the TM and the road, which is why it's good to get in at least a few longer distances on the road.
Anyway, the shorter answer is just try it. Be prepared to increase the walk intervals if you feel you need to, but don't stress too much either way! And have fun!
Cami - As much as I want to say go ahead and do Goofy, 8 weeks is really pushing it. I just looked at my log for 2010 - I had a hip injury and had to take 2 months off during the summer. I did my first run of 4 miles on August 24, and I ran a marathon on October 31. My longest run was 17.5 miles, but I increased the mileage so quickly to get up to speed that I ended up with really severe plantar fasciitis that I've only recently overcome. The half might be doable for you, but both? That scares me!
Joan - Sorry. Wish I could have offered more positive input on the race, but since it's their first time running this particular race... I'm sure it will be fine, and I certainly understand about the 1:00 start being a better fit! I just have to help promote the City of Oaks, since my Galloway director is also the race director! I'm now a course monitor - 7 hour shift. Ugh.
Andrea -
You are definitely in the right place. There's lots of motivation and many, many answers. (Maybe more than you actually want!) Your goal is definitely attainable. And as a 5-year member of a Galloway program, I'm a firm believer in the program. You can walk as much or as little as you like, but the walk breaks give you a chance to recover and decrease your chance of injury. (Yeah, I know, I could like an ad!)
Jeremy - I'd keep tossing that marathon idea around. But you don't have to rush! Disney's a great one, but there are plenty of others that are almost as much fun. I haven't done the Flying Pig yet, but I hear really good things!
We leave Friday morning for DC. It's very, very real now.
