WISH'ers walking, running and "other"ing in 2012--General Discussion thread

Mike - My bib # is 24868. For those of you who're friends with me on FB, my updates will appear automatically. Gotta love technology!

And I'll go ahead and say it publicly: my goal is 5:30, but I'm hoping to do most, if not all, of the race with a friend from my Galloway group, so I'm potentially willing to alter my time depending on how she's doing. I may leave her if I'm feeling strong, or I may choose to stay with her if I feel like company is more important. Last year's MCM was really, really tough for me, and the feeling of being alone on the course was a big part of that. So it's out there. And you can all know whether or not it happens!

Jackie

So, I haven't posted or even been on the board much in the last month because I've been so frustrated. After I ran a half-marathon trail race last month, my feet just wouldn't heal (there was some history of injury before the race). So, the sports med doc finally sent me for a bone scan - a stress fracture in both. So, I'm sidelined for another 3 weeks. The doc didn't rule out me racing in January (I'm registered for the Goofy), but said I should keep cross training and adjust my expectations for the race. I can try running for the first time one day before the deferral deadline - not much to base a decision on. Then I have 8 weeks to build up some mileage and taper off. I really want to do this race mostly because my husband is running the marathon and I want to be there with him. What do you think? Am I crazy? Well, I know I'm crazy about running. But am I foolish? I should have a good cardio and strength base when I start running again. But what is the shortest time any of you had to build up mileage when training for a marathon?

Another week, more runs...

Maura Hope your Boston trip/work is going well. Great your daughter has a job. My DD graduated in May and also found a job! I assume your daughter is a hard worker and go getter like mine. Hope you can let your competitive side go and have fun at the marathon relay. Maybe set another goal, like how many photo ops with characters or something like that.

JackieThanks for the race info...not what I wanted to hear. Was hoping you would have great things to say about the Nov. 13 race. It starts at 1pm, better time for my college boy, than 7am., and he has to travel from Buies Creek (south of Raleigh), and the milage fits his training plan. Good luck in your race!

halvnorskHope your foot gets better soon. No words of wisdom from me, but hope you do what's best for your health.

Mike So for that half you did in under 2 hours, great! I'd love to do a sub 2 hour half. You ran for 4:30 min. at what pace and walked for :30 at what pace?

Jeremy You just continue to make great progress. So when are you running the full? You should do one.

If I've forgotten some one, I apologize. It's hard to scroll, down and make sure I give props to all...so to everyone, keep on running/walking it is so good for us.

AFM I had a short long run of 8 miles this week and had a goal of 9:40 miles. Probably not good, but I came in at 9:20 miles and kept telling myself to slow down during the run and felt I could have gone longer when I was done with 8. I'm not a clock watcher when I run as the only number I can read on my device is distance, so I never know how it went till I plug in and see the numbers once home. All my weekly workouts are great. New territory on Monday, 17 miles.

That said, I'd be freaking.out if I had to run a marathon in 4:30 or be swept!

Ok, NOW I'm getting nervous. I just read that there is some leniency in the second half but you have to finish the first 13.1 in 2:15. It is run through residential neighborhoods with no street lights so you have to be back on the Vegas strip before dark. I just did a half in 2:03 but I really pushed.....if I run like that in the first half, what am I going to have left in the second? I've always been stronger toward the end.

Races begin at 4 and 5:30 which already feels weird but we live on Eastern Standard Time so it will feel like I'm starting at 7 pm.

We should have gone to Disney!

In better news, I went ahead and signed up my high school senior for the half. It was a tough decision because I am meeting up with single friends at least once and having her there will keep us out of the casinos and clubs. I don't actually do any of those things anyway LOL but want to be flexible for my friends. Also, she will be alone after the marathon starts and again after her race ends.

I'm sure you can do it! Think that 2:15 (not that you want to cut it that close on the first half, but just for argument's sake) is almost a minute/mile slower than 2:03. I ran my half last weekend in 2:04, but at around the 5 mile point I was playing a little leapfrog with the 2:10 pacers and I was feeling really comfortable at that point (in fact too comfortable - them catching me was the kick in the pants for me to pick it up and lose them for good!). So 30-45 seconds slower per mile can really ease things up.

I received some advice recently along these lines - in the first half of the race, ask yourself "Am I going slow enough?" and in the second half of the race, ask yourself "Am I going fast enough?" That's complicated a bit when "slow enough" has to be faster than 2:15 - but I would pick a pace just faster than that (say a 2:12 half for a buffer) and try to practice hitting it on a couple of short or medium runs.

Thanks Sarah, I'm feeling a little calmer now. :) I posted awhile back that I was thinking about hooking up with a pace group. I decided against it but am now thinking it might be a smart move, at least for the first half.

I have been butting heads with my daughter over her estimated time of finish. I wanted to put 2:00 and she was all offended. LOL

I'm new to the Wish Boards and would love to get more involved.

Just a bit about me...I'm hoping to run WDW marathon in January, 2013. I have run 3 half- marathons, including DL in 2009. I'm turning 40 at the end of 2012 and I keep thinking this would be a great accomplishment in honor of my big birthday. I'm a mother of two boys (ages 4 and 6) and work full time so I need to set realistic goals for myself. I haven't run in about a year and just started again a few weeks ago. I'm currently building up a base and I'm hoping to run a half the end of April 2012 and maybe another one in the fall. I'm also thinking of trying out Jeff Galloway's program. Like so many others, my mindset has always been that walking a {half} marathon is a copout. But, after reading so many reviews of his plan, maybe there is just something to it.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and join your thread.

Andrea

Hi all

Jackie - Good luck on the Marathon.

Cami - Sorry to hear about the stress fractures. I'm not sure if I'd try for the Goofy this year.

Joan - Nice job on the short long run.

Pengirl10 - I agree that sticking around a pace group for the first 13.1 miles to make sure you're not going too fast or too slow sounds like a good idea.

Andrea - In addition to Galloway's plans you may want to look into Bingham/Hadfields "Marathoning for Mortals" plans. Their plans feature shorter long runs and longer midweek runs than Jeff's plans.

Right now, the idea of a full marathon is being tossed around in my head. I'd like to improve my speed at least a little bit more before trying a full. In training for DL, I did a 15 mile training run to test out a longer run. I finished at a decent pace but it just didn't go well for some reason. I know if I would get into Marathon training my paces would get even more relaxed. Galloway recommended a 14:00 mile for half marathon long runs and a 15:00 mile for the marathon so that would change things. Right now, I'm thinking about next fall for my first full marathon. At one time I had thought about 2013 WDW, but I'm not sure the budget is going to allow that

Saturday I did 6 miles 5 of which was run 2/walk 1. That's a more aggressive ratio than I normally do for a longer run but it went fairly well. That's roughly been my plan so far is after a half marathon, cut back on the overall mileage but increase the portion of it running. Monday and Wednesday I went out and run 3 miles again some walking added to the beginning and end.

I know every person is different, but I had a question for the experienced run/walk crew out there. I've toyed with the run/walk run on the treadmill some for really long runs, but this weekend I'm hitting the road. The longest continuous run I've ever done was 8.5 miles. I've done 11+ miles running 5 and walking 1 (averaging about 10mm). I'd like to keep my times around that 10mm mark.

Is it too much to expect to do 10-12 miles this weekend at that pace during my first attempt on the road. I'd really like to get that much mileage in (if possible). Should I possibly increase my walking time to accomodate or should I just try it and see how I do?

I'm thinking of not hurting myself as much as I'm thinking of distance.

If you really want the distance, I'd go out and try to stick with same intervals you've been doing, but not worry so much about the pace. I suspect you may find it's about the same, maybe even a little faster. Some people are faster on the TM, some are faster on the road. Where I definitely felt the difference (especially at higher mileages) was in the rest of my body the next day. There's a significant difference in the overall pounding that your body takes between the TM and the road, which is why it's good to get in at least a few longer distances on the road.

Anyway, the shorter answer is just try it. Be prepared to increase the walk intervals if you feel you need to, but don't stress too much either way! And have fun!

Cami - As much as I want to say go ahead and do Goofy, 8 weeks is really pushing it. I just looked at my log for 2010 - I had a hip injury and had to take 2 months off during the summer. I did my first run of 4 miles on August 24, and I ran a marathon on October 31. My longest run was 17.5 miles, but I increased the mileage so quickly to get up to speed that I ended up with really severe plantar fasciitis that I've only recently overcome. The half might be doable for you, but both? That scares me!

Joan - Sorry. Wish I could have offered more positive input on the race, but since it's their first time running this particular race... I'm sure it will be fine, and I certainly understand about the 1:00 start being a better fit! I just have to help promote the City of Oaks, since my Galloway director is also the race director! I'm now a course monitor - 7 hour shift. Ugh.

Andrea - :welcome: You are definitely in the right place. There's lots of motivation and many, many answers. (Maybe more than you actually want!) Your goal is definitely attainable. And as a 5-year member of a Galloway program, I'm a firm believer in the program. You can walk as much or as little as you like, but the walk breaks give you a chance to recover and decrease your chance of injury. (Yeah, I know, I could like an ad!)

Jeremy - I'd keep tossing that marathon idea around. But you don't have to rush! Disney's a great one, but there are plenty of others that are almost as much fun. I haven't done the Flying Pig yet, but I hear really good things!

We leave Friday morning for DC. It's very, very real now.

Jackie

That's what I was thinking. I'm usually faster on the road than the treadmill. The only exception was the time I was going for broke on a treadmill 5k time. lol.

I'm shooting for a minimum of 6 miles this Saturday, but deep down want 10-12. I'd still like to keep my time no more than 10mm either way if I'm doing 5:1 run/walk ratio.

If you defer will you come in 2013. That will probably give you a better experience. But I'm sure that with for pool running to keep your cardio up, and then reducing your speed expectations you can do goofy, if you will be disappointed all year that you didn't complete it, I'd run. Otherwise I'll see you in 2013.

joan
I was running right about an 8. It wasn't real scientific, I had a countdowntimer on my watch set for 5 minutes. When it beeped I reset it, walked until 4:30 and then started running. If you are running 9:20 miles straight up you should have no problem running sub 2:00. I think next time I'm doing with a run 3 walk 30.

pensgirl10
You don't have to run with a pacegroup if you don't want to, you can usually see them from 10-20 feet behind them, just check to make sure they are there every so often.

dragitoff
I agree with Jackie, don't worry about pace, as you will run different on the road. Keep the same walk breaks and same perceived effort you should be fine.

Mike - Thanks! Although I didn't get the 5:30 that I've been chasing for 3 years now, I did achieve a much more important goal - I finished all 26.2 miles without hitting the wall. Each of my previous 4 marathons have included some point (or points) at which I completely fell apart and swore to myself I would never, ever run again. This time I ran/walked the entire distance and crossed the finish line with a huge smile on my face, mostly thanks to the friend who was with me the entire time. We finished together, and that made all the difference. And it was still a PR by 11 minutes, so I'm thrilled! And so sore today that I can hardly breathe - apparently that's what happens when you don't run for 2 weeks prior to the marathon... :confused3

Jackie

Jackie yeah on your marathon. :cheer2: Bet it was a bit cold to start.

Dragifoff How'd your weekend run go?

Jeremy You just keep getting better and better. Keep it up!

Andrea Good luck on your training...having little ones takes a lot of time and energy...I used to have 4 now all adults.

pensgirls When is your race? I think the pace group is a good idea too. Gotta love our DD's.

ASM- Once again the weather was great for my LR...18 miles and I feel pretty good this morning and am waiting for the weather to warm up for my 80 min bike ride. The run was good, but the pace was not 9:03mm-to over 12 mm. The last 2 miles were the worst. I know I went out fast. I think because I was well rested and fueled and just didn't feel I was going so fast (for me). I was hydrating well (really love my handheld and now am thinking I will carry it for the full at WDW) and my fuel was good. I had a 6 mile loop past my house and could refill my bottle and grab a 1/3 of a bar I had split up and put in a baggie by my garage. I had jelly beans in the pouch of my handheld and I like to pop one in my mouth and take a swig of water with it.

It went great! I was able to complete my 12 miles in 1:55. It was definitely a learning experience and my first shot at fueling while running. That was a new experience (mainly just figuring out how to carry everything). I'm seriously wanting to do a run like that every weekend (time permitting).

Jackie - YEA!!! Congratulations on your marathon and PR. I had a similar marathon on 10/23 when I bumped into somw Galloway friends and ran as a group. I didn't quite hit my 5:30 but it was close. But most importantly it was fun! :dance3:

Andrea - Hi and welcome! You can do it - we're all rooting for you!:cheer2:

Cami - So sorry about your stress fractures! To be honest, I wouldn't do the Goofy. Maybe one or the other, but not both. Reaching this short term goal might result in long term problems. I know it's hard to wait an entire year to try it again. Whatever you decide we'll all cheer you on!

Hey guys, hope I am in the right spot to become a WISH'er! Please add me to the list. I will be running in the Princess Half in February, that will be my fourth Half Marathon. Three years ago I ran my first Half at Disney's Marathon Weekend in January...yes the one where there was ice, hail, and I believe, snow! :-)

Let me know if there is anything else I need to do to become official. I have subscribed to the Princess Thread.

I'm looking to become an official W.I.S.H.er, too. Can you add me to the list?
Thanks

Hi! Hopefully I'm in the right spot to become an official WISH'er! I'm a newbie to the DISboards... Could I please be added to the list?! :yay: I will be running in the Princess Half in February. This is my first Disney race and first Half Marathon!!! :cheer2:

Please let me know if there is anything else I need to do to become an official WISH'er. I *think* I have subscribed to the Princess Thread.

Can't wait to get to know you all!

Stephanie :yay:
