The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

That sounds tremendous......I miss Jack !!
What a rubbish day.
I know its pathetic but my team lost again and Ive been seriously beelin all day.
As a famous Scots manager once said " Footballs not a matter of life and death, its much more important than that !! "

And just to top it off the wind is howlin like a banshee and Im afeard...

You crack me up!!!!:rotfl:
Greg is one of Jack's biggest fans!

Laura, I do think Greg is thinking that. It's not a good situation at all.
Yeah, for Liam! Why not steak & ketchup?

Bethany, holidays cause stress. Sorry all the changes are happening.

The pumpkin pancakes were really good. Greg had his plain & I put chocolate chips in my batter:love:

 Sorry your day is so rotten! Between your team's loss and nasty weather, plus your lack of sleep, I can see why you feel crummy!

Yes, their seafood is very good!

Glad you think so! We thought it was good but I have very little to compare it to! I feel more than a little out of place in there, but it tastes good!

YEA!!! I found you. Thanks Kat for taking such good care of us.

I am such a terrible friend as I haven't read back, checked in or anything. We went into Lincoln yesterday for the Husker game and got home last night -well early this morning at 3am. Slept till 9 and got busy. I am packed and my baking is finished so now I have a bit before the kids get here to at least say hi.

Jay still is not home. :sad1: Flights have been canceled and we really don't know what is going on. Elizabeth did just call and say she really thought that he might be on the way as she hasn't heard from him for 12 hours. But we really have no idea. So please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers. I hate leaving tomorrow without knowing and without them.

We are leaving early tomorrow morning. I will try to check in once we get there but I have no idea what the internet will be like. Please know I think of you all like family and pray for you daily.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.

You hush! You're not a terrible friend! Thanks for the update on Jay; I wish for your sake that it was a better one. :grouphug:

Bethany, Funny how unstressful you have been the last few months! Family has a way of making life good but also causing those neck & shoulder muscles to hurt like heck! ;)

Liam said he wants steak with lots of ketchup for Thanksgiving. Guess what? He is getting it.
.

That's funny! Steak & ketchup, it's not even his birthday!

Oh please don't worry about Johnny, did you see the list of desserts at the buffet we're going to???????

I just love the way A works you!:lmao:

Yes I read it! I had to keep wiping the drool off the keyboard. But it is a buffet, so he won't have leftovers!

We'll miss you! I will keep praying that Jay makes it home!

:rotfl2: Girlfriend you are too funny! I miss you! But it's nice I can hear your voice in your posts!

Are you sure you're not a Who Dat fan?! We take our footie to heart down here also. We're just not crying lately as we are 10-0!!! :rotfl2::cool1:

Oooh Robin, Did you hear about that! Saints 10-Zero!!! :rolleyes1

Maria, Your desserts sound so good!

Ann, Your menu sounds a lot like mine! Are you sure you're not a southern girl? ;)

My prayers are with Jay. Have a safe trip and a wonderful holiday.

Greg decided to let me know that Thanksgiving night or very early Friday we are going to Maryland to see my MIL......Not thrilled about it but ok. Then he says if Cameron wants to meet us maybe we can meet her Saturday. I don't want to meet Cameron until she has been to the lawyer & a decision has been made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We aren't seeing eye to eye on this at all.

I hope y'all can come to some compromise, or (better yet) he starts seeing it your way :rolleyes1

I found some wonderful cheese for the appetizer tray I am making for T'day. I went next door to one of my fav liquor stores, guess what they had. The pumpkin spice wine I have been searching for :cool1:

Oooh, that pumpkin spice wine sounds tasty! What brand is it?

I've also been trying to deal with Thanksgiving planning. The whole story is on the NOLA thread if you're inclined to read it - it spans a few posts on the current last page and the day before. The short version is that my parents, in an attempt to "make it less stressful", keep calling with new ideas and possible changes in plans. I have no idea why they think this would make it LESS stress. I think my #1 pet peeve in trip planning is indecisiveness!

Where do your parent and ILs live? I can't remember if you've said before.

 about Jay. I sure hope he surprises everyone and is home before anyone knows it.

Hope you have a good trip!!

My plans for Tuesday changed a little... I bought a turkey, since we don't eat turkey on Thanksgiving, and thought I'd do a mini Thanksgiving dinner with 2 of our favorite sides that night. I invited my dad (who is now working 2 blocks from me!) to come over after work. DH decided to invite another couple, who we haven't seen in awhile. I'm more than happy to have them over but with dad it's just "family" and he practically lives here. I don't worry about it being super nice. Adding GUESTS is different! So I've added to the menu and this is what we're having. What do y'all think?

Turkey (using Alton Browns brined recipe)
Sausage and Fennel Stuffing
Green Bean Casserole (another Alton Brown recipe, not Campbells!)
Fried brussel sprouts with walnuts and capers
Potato au gratin
Crescent rolls
Cranberry sauce (I've never made this but there is an easy recipe on the bag of cranberries )

Plus Lemon Meringue pie

Now I have to deep clean the house, set the dining table, clean the china, etc... by Tuesday!

Where do your parent and ILs live? I can't remember if you've said before.

They all live in SE Washington State. My mom and dad have been living in the same house since 1998 but my brother and his wife were living in Seattle up until about a month ago. My brother just finished up school at the University of Washington this past spring and now they live about 15 minutes from my parents.

The new worry right now is the weather. My brother and SIL are flying out of Seattle; they bought the tickets before they moved and were unable to change them. It's about a 4 hour drive and they have to go over a mountain pass, and the pass can be sketchy at this time of the year.

As for the airport by my parents, TWICE I have been diverted for fog at that airport at Thanksgiving (going home from college). They are connecting in Denver. I don't know if my brother has direct flights or not.

And Sheryl, you're right - the most stress I think I've had the last several months was the last few minutes of the Saint's game last week! :lmao:

What will be, will be. I'm done thinking about it. If the rest of them want to stress, they are more than welcome to - so long as they keep it to themselves!

Now I have to deep clean the house, set the dining table, clean the china, etc... by Tuesday!

I dropped a plate today. I only had 8 dinner size plates, now 7. Still enough. I have enough silverware. What I realized I DON'T have is 8 nice glasses. I think we'll be using what a friend of mine refers to as "New Orleans Fine China" for Thanksgiving! :rotfl: :lmao:

Aimee, Your menu sounds delicious!:thumbsup2

Bethany, I like your thinking!

Maria, I'm sorry, I missed stuff in your post earlier. I'm sorry Thanksgiving is turning into a stressful deal for you. Definitely not what you need right now.

Thanks Sheryl, I appreciate that.....I'm awake obsessing.

Aimee, try o.j when you make the cranberries. Easy but gives it a really great taste.

Bethany, you have the right idea....Let them stress.;)

Awww, I'm really sorry! I wish I had some wise words for you. I don't, but I do have prayers!:flower3:

I'm obsessing but on something much less stressful. Thinking of something different to do with my breadpudding. I think I'm going to try soaking cranberries in Cherry Bounce (a homemade cherry infused whiskey) then using that in the pudding & making a sauce adding cherry bounce.

I'm glad you specified what Cherry Bounce is. It sounds like scented fabric softener sheets.

I had a few posts quoted, then the internet froze! :headache: And of course now I cannot remember who I quoted. :sad2:

Didn't get as much done this weekend as I had hoped including the storage room curtains. I went to get out the stuff to put them up today and couldn't find the little posts that the track attach's to. I looked all over the place then tonight I was going through a box of stuff and opened up an pretty candy box I had saved and there they were. Not sure what possed me to put them in there.

I did get the quilt done although not without the usual last minute drama. I went to JoAnn and got the backing fabric but only asked for a yard of it. :headache: So the next morning I headed out again the return it, thinking it would only take 20 minutes in the store, it ended up taking 45. I had to take the fabric back to the cutters to have them re-measure and then get the proper amount, which of course they did not have enough of. Luckily I picked up a 2nd fabric just in case. The woman who was waiting on me was slooooooow as molasses and kept having to put on and take off her glasses every time she looked at something. Then when I went to check out the return part took a minute but then when the guy went to charge me for the new fabric the computer froze up. :sad2: So instead of just taking me to another register he just stood there until I started tapping on the counter. Then he sent me to another register.

My cousin loved it! And the party was really nice, lots of people and good food.

It's an old cajun liqueur, myPaw-Paw always made it & had some in the cabinet. Bob & I've been working on one for about 3 years now. You put cherries in whiskey & just let it sit for years. As you drink some, (it usually only came out at holidays) you add whiskey back into the bottle & let it sit until next year.

I think I'm going to go with dried cherries soaked in the cherry bounce & then make a cream butter sauce with it also.

Sheryl My grandmother used to do cherries in Slivovitz which is a serbian plum brandy, she would add to it every christmas. That stuff would knock you off your chair and was a great paint remover. When my uncle and I were cleaning out their house years later we found some of that stuff. We treated it like hazardous waste :rotfl2:

Maria Try not to think of it only being just the 3 of you for dinner. Think of it as 3 of the you most favorite people. My thoughts and prayers are with you when you see Cameron.

Tonight will be busy I have to make that birthday cake. So I will be MIA don't worry. I will try and remember to take a picture.

Alex has this week off but I have to work til wednesday. :upsidedow.

Good Morning! I will be back when I get my head on straight just wanted to say hi.

Dinner will be chicken stir fry and rice.

Have a great day all! BBL

.....I'm awake obsessing.
I was awake last night too. Had a bad night :sad1:, more DB hurt. Found out there was a birthday party for my DN, and I was not included on the VIP guest list. (I always use to be included in prior years) Everytime this happens it really get me so upset. I am questioning if I can handle Thanksgiving. Just some background, DSIL was my maid of honor at my first wedding. I knew her before DB. I just feel like the only reason we are included in holidays at their house is because of my parents. They have a friend who makes my skin crawl and I feel like she and her family have taken my place.

I'm obsessing but on something much less stressful. Thinking of something different to do with my breadpudding. I think I'm going to try soaking cranberries in Cherry Bounce (a homemade cherry infused whiskey) then using that in the pudding & making a sauce adding cherry bounce.

Now this is the obsessing Maria & I should have been doing instead.
I did get the quilt done...
My cousin loved it! .

Glad it was a hit! I just love quilts. That is the country girl in me.

Sheryl, I am just a wanna be southern girl at heart. Although, DH is trying to make me one someday by moving to NC.

Ellen, still sending prayers for Jay's safe travels and a wonderful home coming.

Laura, I am with Liam...I much rather have a good steak over turkey.

WFD- hotdogs & chips.

Good morning ladies! Tonight's dinner is roast beef po boys (with lots of gravy for Kenny - none for the kiddos).

Nancy - Thanks for the phone call on Saturday. I really appreciated it.

Maria - Thank you so very much for the sweet card and the gifts. They truly meant so much.

Kat - Please keep us posted on your doctor visit.

Ellen - Continued prayers for Jay making it home.

Laura - Late congrats to Caili. :cool1:

Everyone else, please forgive me, I have pudding brain. As Nancy said, I'm having the first holiday blues and I'm not thinking really clearly. I'm just trying to get through this week. Hopefully it will be over quickly.

Good morning everyone!

WFD - Leftovers.

Aimee - Your menu sounds great!!!!!

Ann - I'm so sorry you're having more family issues.

Hello! You guys have been so chatty!

Saturday dinner was seafood fra diavlo with scallops, clams, squid, haddock, and mahi mahi. I did not take a picture of the finished dish, unfortunately. Here are the seared scallops:

Yesterday I made a 7-lb rib roast...which was supposed to be served to my inlaws but they cancelled because my MIL had a cold. So I brought my roast to my Mom's, and we had my roast alongside her roast! Needless to say there are lots of leftovers.
