The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Ann, any news on DHs interview?

Greg decided to let me know that Thanksgiving night or very early Friday we are going to Maryland to see my MIL......Not thrilled about it but ok. Then he says if Cameron wants to meet us maybe we can meet her Saturday. I don't want to meet Cameron until she has been to the lawyer & a decision has been made!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We aren't seeing eye to eye on this at all.

Maria, we are waiting for HR to contact him. First step is them setting up drug test. Sounds good, fingers still crossed it pans out.

For what it is worth, I agree with you about Cameron. Had you not already been through so much then maybe I can see Greg's point of view. Sorry, my friend but I am being protective of you both. :grouphug: Please keep your guard up.

Thanks Kathy! I didn't mean to nag you, but I always get excited when you mention a restaurant that might be new to me.

Sorry, you were disappointed in the food. We've eaten fried seafood there and weren't really impressed with it.

Hope you feel better soon.

Aimee, You could use an ice chest to brine your turkey.

I found this online:

Brining produces an incomparably juicy turkey, with wonderful flavor and texture. If you don't have room to brine the turkey in the refrigerator, use an ice chest. Place the turkey and the brine in a heavy-weight plastic garbage bag (don't use bags made from recycled materials), then place that bag inside a second bag. Smoosh out all the air pockets, close the inner bag, then the outer, and pack in the chest with ice. The bird will happily -- and safely -- brine away.

Question:confused: Has anyone made the Raglan Road bread pudding?? I'm confused by the recipe, but I'm sure I made it once before. Is the custard ingredients at the bottom a seperate custard to serve with the cooked bread pudding? I don't remember it having a custard served with it?

Raglan Road: Ger’s Bread & Butter Pudding Including the Butterscotch & Custard Sauce Recipes!
Note: This recipe comes straight from RR’s Head Chef’s cookbook.

2 oz. raisins
2 ½ Tbsp. Irish Mist
¾ stick butter, at room temp
12 slices medium-sliced white bread, crust removed
1 1/3 cups cream
1 1/3 cups milk
4 egg yolks
1/3 cup caster sugar
2 eggs
Soak raisins in Irish Mist overnight. Drain off excess.
Preheat oven to 350. Generously butter an ovenproof dish. Using the remaining butter, butter both sides of bread slices & cut each into fourths.
Arrange a single layer of bread slices in the dish, slightly overlapping. Scatter with some raisins. Repeat with one more layer of bread then raisins. Press down gently.
Heat the cream & milk until just to a boil. Remove from heat. Meanwhile, whisk together the egg yolks & sugar in a heatproof bowl over simmering water until thickened. Remove from heat and beat in the cream mixture.
Pour two-thirds of the custard mixture over the bread and let stand for 30 minutes.
Pour remaining custard over soaked bread in dish and arrange the rest of the bread on top. Press down firmly so the custard comes halfway up the bread. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown.

BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE
½ stick unsalted butter
4 Tbsp. light muscovado sugar
2 ½ Tbsp. clear honey
2 ½ Tbsp. double cream
Place butter sugar, and honey in a small pan. Bring to a boil over moderate heat, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Reduce heat. Add cream and simmer 2 to 3 minutes until thickened.

EGG CUSTARD
2 ¾ cups milk
6 egg yolks
3 ¾ Tbsp. caster sugar
a few drops of pure vanilla extract
Bring milk to scalding point in a nonstick pan. Meanwhile, place the egg yolks in a bowl with the sugar & vanilla stirring to combine. Slowly, whisk the hot milk into the egg mixture. Wipe out the pan and pour in the egg mixture and cook, stirring constantly, for about 10 minutes until thickened. Do not let boil!

Kathy, I'm glad you're feeling better! :goodvibes But you still need to go get checked out by a gastro dr.

I was hoping Ellen had checked in to let us know that Jay got a flight home.

Lauri, I hope your boys don't come home empty handed! Did they get anything?

O Ann if they came home with one I don't know where I would go with it and it come back from the processors while were in FL no good. Plus I have to save some room in the freezer for husband some days and boys are getting to that point also.:rotfl2:
By the way would you like me to save you diaper coupons if I find them?

Yes, much better, thanks for asking!:goodvibes

Please still call the Dr. Monday morning though. I know I've been told I'm a nag. But only cause I care.

WOW, you guys are mind readers. I’ve been debating back and forth in my head all day as to whether or not I should call my doc tomorrow. Johnny agrees with y’all so I guess I will. Thanks so much for caring so much, y’all are the greatest!:grouphug:

Bethany – Yep, that’s the Zydeco’s we went to, not impressed at all. Oh, I almost forgot, Johnny loved the Bloody Mary he had.;)

Maria – I totally understand your feelings about Cameron. Know that I’m keeping you in my prayers.

Muffin – You weren’t nagging! I’m sorry I’ve forgotten, are you on the WestBank?

Sheryl – Yes, RR’s bread pudding is served with a custard and a sauce!

Thanks Kathy! I thought it was clotted cream, I didn't realize it was a custard. I think I'm going to use the recipe but make a rum or bourbon cream sauce to go with it.

Note to self going to Trader Joe's can make for a lighter purse ;)

I found some wonderful cheese for the appetizer tray I am making for T'day. I went next door to one of my fav liquor stores, guess what they had. The pumpkin spice wine I have been searching for :cool1:

I forgot to post earlier making Baked penne and a salad.

What is it with today I have had a nagging headache all day. Now it is atleast a low roar over my left eye. :upsidedow

That sounds really good! Johnny loves bread pudding but I hardly ever make it because I end up throwing half of it away.:sad2:

Janice, I hope your headache goes away!

Kathy, If it comes out good & there is some left, I'll bring Johnny some!

I have my pecan pie in the oven. We'll eat some of the roast I cooked last night. That darned thing took forever! It was really tough. :confused3 The rest I put in the freezer for T-day.

Adding baked macaroni to the Turkeyday menu. Alexis asked me "Nana, What kind of noodles do you fix for Thanksgiving Day?" I'm a such a sucker one it comes to that kid!

What a rubbish day.

I know its pathetic but my team lost again and Ive been seriously beelin all day.

As a famous Scots manager once said " Footballs not a matter of life and death, its much more important than that !! "

And just to top it off the wind is howlin like a banshee and Im afeard...

Kathy - Have you gone to Salvo's? They have boiled seafood on their menu "when in season". I've never had it - only poboys from there.

So today I watched the Saints :dance3::cheer2: and then went to Starbucks and then got a frozen pizza at the store. That's WFD. :upsidedow

I've also been trying to deal with Thanksgiving planning. The whole story is on the NOLA thread if you're inclined to read it - it spans a few posts on the current last page and the day before. The short version is that my parents, in an attempt to "make it less stressful", keep calling with new ideas and possible changes in plans. I have no idea why they think this would make it LESS stress. I think my #1 pet peeve in trip planning is indecisiveness!

Hi Everyone. I am just warning you that I probably haven't retained much between the last few pages of the old thread and now four more pages of the new thread. However, I have read everything.

I do hope Gretchen is doing okay.

Welcome to the new posters! I hope you will stick around.

Kathy -- Thanks for taking care of the thread. Now, you need to take care of you and get to the doctor!

I have Clark Griswold syndrome.....and when I plugged them in the entire neighborhood went dark  My neighbor came over and told me I Clarked the neighborhood
:rotfl:

My new TV arrives Tuesday.

Enjoy it! I am sure your DH will.

Ann -- I think you made the right decision. I know you've been hurt, but it always feels better to be the bigger person.

If you brine for that long do not use the drippings for the gravy, it will be wicked salty! Personal experience talking :rolleyes1

I've done that too.

Glynis -- You can't just dangle a great gingerbread pancake recipe over our heads and not offer the recipe! I hope you got all your cleaning done.

Maria -- I understand your feelings about meeting Cameron. Is Greg thinking that if you meet with her she would be more willing to consider you as parents for her child? I would proceed with caution.

Alexis asked me "Nana, What kind of noodles do you fix for Thanksgiving Day?" I'm a such a sucker one it comes to that kid!

Liam said he wants steak with lots of ketchup for Thanksgiving. Guess what? He is getting it.

I hope everyone who has been feeling sick is doing better.

Dinner today was roast beef, gravy, roasted potatoes, spinach gratin, cauliflower casserole, and brussels sprouts. It was all really good, but I am so stuffed.

Bethany Could this be the reason for the migrane? I know I would have a whopper! Take a deep breath. It is only for a couple of days.

You'd think :rotfl2: - but the migraine was Wednesday. The calling really hit full force yesterday!

Oh please don't worry about Johnny, did you see the list of desserts at the buffet we're going to???????

I just love the way A works you!:lmao:

I can totally relate my friend. When my Saints don't play well it ruins my day. I'm watching the Patriots who we play next week and I'm already getting nervous. Stay safe with that weather.

Yes, their seafood is very good!

YEA!!! I found you. Thanks Kat for taking such good care of us.

I am such a terrible friend as I haven't read back, checked in or anything. We went into Lincoln yesterday for the Husker game and got home last night -well early this morning at 3am. Slept till 9 and got busy. I am packed and my baking is finished so now I have a bit before the kids get here to at least say hi.

Jay still is not home. :sad1: Flights have been canceled and we really don't know what is going on. Elizabeth did just call and say she really thought that he might be on the way as she hasn't heard from him for 12 hours. But we really have no idea. So please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers. I hate leaving tomorrow without knowing and without them.

We are leaving early tomorrow morning. I will try to check in once we get there but I have no idea what the internet will be like. Please know I think of you all like family and pray for you daily.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.
