Currently reading The Boleyn Inheritance by Phillipa Gregory.

Just purchased 3 new books at Borders. One by Kristen Hannah because I loved Firefly Lane, one by Beverly Lewis & also Jennifer Weiner. Have never read Weiner or Lewis, but thought I'd try them because of recommendations on this thread. :goodvibes

I just finished reading "The Last Olympian", the last book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series. I really enjoyed these books, and wish that I could get my 9 year old son interested in them. Oh well! I'll just keep trying.

Next up is "Inkdeath". I really enjoyed the other 2 books, and hope this one is as good.

I started another Amish fiction series earlier this evening (3 books) by Cindy Woodsmall..

The first book is "When The Heart Cries" - followed by "When The Morning Comes" and then "When The Soul Mends"..

Her style is definitely different than Beverly Lewis, but so far the first book is very interesting and I'll probably stay up late tonight to finish it..:)

Just finished 'A Good Indian Wife,' thought it was really interesting, well written (it's about an arranged marriage).

Just finished reading After by Amy Efaw. It's about a 15 year old who gives birth and throws the baby in a dumpster. Sounds awful and of course it is, but the story is about what happens after and how she comes to term with what happened. It's a very good book.

I haven't posted anything on here in forever, but I just finished Serendipity by Louise Shaffer. It was definitely worth a read - lot of strong female characters, about the dynamic between generations of women, and a little bit of mystery as the main character discovers these generations. I'm about to start The Day the Falls Stood Still by Cathy Marie Buchanan that I got as an advanced reader - it came out yesterday on Amazon - so I need to write a review for it. It looks really interesting.

I also wanted to mention Honolulu by Alan Brennert, because it's the best book I've read in awhile. It was historical fiction that weaved a lot of true bits into the story of a Korean picture bride who came to Hawaii to escape the expectations of being a Korean woman. It was really touching and interesting and I just wanted to keep reading every time I picked it up. He wrote another one about Hawaii called Molokai, which I requested through the library and am really looking forward to reading.

I also just finished The Last Olympian, the last of the Percy Jackson series (five books, starting with the Lightning Thief).

A great series of books! If you are a Harry Potter fan, these will be right up your alley. Of course, the basic premise is the same: Percy Jackson is a young boy (age 11, I believe) whom discovers that he is a demigod (half human, half god) with his father being one of the old Greek Olympic gods. He goes to a special summer camp (Camp Half Blood) where he learns how to fight Monsters, etc. Turns out that one of the original Titans (indeed, the father of Zeus, Posideon and Hades) is 'stirring' again, and seeking power. Is Percy the one in the prophecy? etc etc.

Look, if one is going to 'knock off' the Harry Potter books, at least do it well. Here the author (Rick Riordan, who actually writes adult mystery books) does it very well indeed.

you would fit in well at our house!

DD11 is reading Inkdeath
DD9 is reading Inkspell

and I justed ordered the first 4 Olympian books through a scholastic book order. DD11 said almost every boy read them in 5th grade last year and both girls love Harry Potter/fantasy stuff.

Other series in this same genre to try with your son are the Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer and the Gregor the Overlander books by Suzanne collins. You can often get a great deal on them through school book orders, and they qualify for the 4-for-3 promotion at amazon.

My son who is now 13 loved the Percy Jackson books and upon his urging I read the series. I loved it. We were thrilled to see a preview to a Percy Jackson movie when we saw Harry Potter. We knew right away what the movie was that they were previewing before they put the title up. We will be going to see it.:goodvibes

If you like Dragons try Eon. I loved that book. It is a ggod book for girls too, because it is about a girl.

Thanks for the suggestions. I only have one boy (that reads), and I'm looking for anything that will tempt him to read. He's reading the Harry Potter books, but I'd like to have a plethora of stuff for him.

It's been so long since I read the first two "Ink..." books, that I'm struggling a bit with "Inkdeath," but I'm determined to finish it!

I started Dead as a Doornail (Charlaine Harris) yesterday and I'll probably finish it tonight. As good as the others. :thumbsup2

I just started reading Debbie Macomber's 92 Pacific Boulevard. It's the newest book from her Cedar Cove series.

I am just starting Storm Cycle by Iris Johansen and her son Roy Johansen.

So far so good. :thumbsup2

I really enjoyed their last book they wrote together Silent Thunder.

Well last night I finished the Cindy Woodsmall "Sister's Of The Quilt" Amish series - 3 books in all.. As I said earlier, her writing style is different than that of Beverly Lewis, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.. Lots of "twists and turns".. I'll definitely be on the look out for more books by Cindy..:thumbsup2

I'm not sure what I'll start today.. Will have to mull it over for a bit and decide if I want to read more Amish fiction or switch back to Christian contemporary.. Then again, I may veer off in a totally different direction and read a true crime book.. I'll have so see what I'm in the mood for later on..:goodvibes

I just finished reading "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. I loved it! It's definitely a thought-provoking novel about women & their domestics set in Mississippi in the early 1960's.

I'm about a quarter of the way into The Memory Keeper's Daughter

I just finished 20,000 Leagues under the Sea... it took me forever to finish but it was very good :goodvibes:

Now I'm reading Beach Music by Pat Conroy

I love Conroy! I just finished "South of Broad", his long-awaited book set in Charleston. If you enjoy Beach Music you will love this one. :)
