The public didn't tolerate it. Kate was beat up on the boards. I was very much pro Jon at that time. I don't think anyone thought that was a good thing that she disrespected Jon. That said, it seemed to me that TLC wanted Kate to look like that, and made sure they showed every moment. Now, I think they want Jon to be the 'bad guy' and that's what we'll see.
I really do wonder though, if that was how Kate got back to him for what we didn't see. I think there is a lot more to this sad marriage than we'll ever know. Not that I think anyone should be so disrespectful (and apparent to me, she was unloving) to their spouse (and Jon did get his licks in in other ways..he was more subtle about it, but it was there, and she usually laughed off his remarks), as Kate was shown to be to him. But why did TLC keep showing that? Did it draw more people to the show, to see what she would say next? Those things could have easily been edited out.

I don't think the public would have ever tolerated a husband belittling a wife about her weight, lack of hair or her not having her twenty something physique. Or for her inability to breathe quietly, talk correctly, take care of her kids, perform routine household tasks to his standards, etc. There seems to be a double standard.
