My niece just retruend from Florida. She is 25 and graduated from college couple years ago. She applied for a reservations position at Walt Disney World. She went through 2 interviews. When they did the background check, they also did a credit check. She made some stupid mistakes on credit cards when she was in college, therefore her credit is not good. She never thought it would prevent her from getting a job. Disney told her due to her bad credit, she would not be hired. WOW.... Can you believe all the WDW must have credit scores in the 700s... I am sorry, the mouse is getting just a little picky for the employees he wants to underpay.

Banks do the same thing
I think the feeling is that if you don't pay your bills you might be tempted to do something dishonest.
I know Disney is not the only one that does this

I think that's the gist of the freecreditreport.com commercial about the guy working at the fish restaurant. It is becomming a lot more common - and when you have two equally qualified applicants would you rather hire the one who used poor financial judgment or the one who did not?

Now marketing credit cards to college students, that is another thread!

There are a lot of companies that will check your credit before hiring you. Many of these companies have you working around cash. They figure if you have bad credit, and struggle to pay your bills, you may be tempted to do something dishonest.

Yeah, it's pretty common. DH had one (banker) and I've had several credit/background checks in my time.

They should really teach money management in high school just for issues like this!

I guess it is telling that Disney is able to be so picky with people they pay so little to; most low paying jobs don't have such stringent requirements.

Did she apply for the front desk or to take ressies over the phone? The reservations dept is separate from WDW. They're located in Tampa.

When my brother applied to Disney a few years back, they didn't check his credit. Even if they did, his score would've been low because he's never had a cc or a loan in his life.

Did they tell her it had to be in the 700's?

Did she default on loans or was she just late a few times?

Credit scores are also used for determining car insurance rates.

I has to do with being bonded or insured. It used to be only bankruptcy, but nowadays, the stakes are raised to other credit infractions in many cases.

hmmm... there has to be some other variable, perhaps a skeleton in the closet or the position your niece applied for. I know far too many CM's up to their ears in debt, with horrible credit that are presently working for the company.

I was denied a job once for something on my report that wasn't even mine. I disputed with the agencies but they refused to remove it. Now I have a neg on my reports which I continue to dispute with no success.

It sucks but that is the way things work now.

Many companies/corporations do a credit check prior to hiring.

That is why it is imperative for parents or schools to teach financial planning prior to kids entering college.

My personal opinion is, if you are not working a job that requires you to have direct access to cash, your credit score is pretty irrelevant. What difference does a credit score make for a ride operator or character?

I niether know nor care about the credit scores of my employees; I evaluate them on their work performance.

That's a little bit ridiculous in my opinion that you check a credit score to determine someone is a qualified canidate. In some cases even a criminal background shouldn't matter. Ah well... corporate American bullpoop.

I know this isn't quite the same thing but I have a friend who embezzled a lot of money from her employer. She got first offender status and as long as she pays her fine and stays clean during her probation it will never go on her record. So she could get hired having previously stolen from her employer.

The reason for this is that the reservation agents have access to credit card numbers of the guests. Alot of jobs that require taking payments have credit standards. They would rather hire those people that are financially responsible because they think they are less likely to "help themselves" to pay bills. Right or wrong, that is the reasoning. I don't think that everyone who has bad credit is a criminal, nor do I think that everyone who pays their bills is honest, but businesses feel they lessen the potential problem people by running credit checks.

This makes the most sense- I completely understand why a reservation clerk should have a credit check.

Do we know for sure that they base the selection process on credit scores for ALL positions? Or is the OP assuming this?
