Zyrtec D

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have any experience with taking Zyrtec D? My boyfriend is going to be taking it this week before he comes with me to my parents house for Thanksgiving to help ease the symptoms of his allergy to cats. Does anyone know what the side effects for this allergy medicine are?

My son takes this daily. It is a *great* antihistamine; however, it can make you very drowsy. Once you take it for a few weeks, you kind of get over it, but it sounds like your boyfriend is only going to take it short term. He should take it before he goes to bed, that should help. It works for 24 hours. I feel for him. I'm fairly allergic to cats and I just won't go to anyone's house who has them. He must really love you!

Go to the pharmacist and ask! Get the drug-info sheet from the pharmacy if you can.

Here is what I think... The doctor at the Walk-In clinic here had recomended taking Claritin during the day, and Zyrtek at night. I think this is because it may cause some drowsiness. Add the decongestant in Zyrtek-D, and I am afraid that drowsiness or jitteryness may be an effect.

I have taken Allegra and like it. Doesn't seem to bother me with any side effects! Your boyfriend may also want to consider a nasal spray, like NasaCort, NasalCrom, etc... Seems like a cat allergy can really mess with the sinuses!

We like Zyrtec-D. My DH, DS12, and I all have allergies that only Zyrtec seems to help, we've tried all the others.

It doesn't make us drowsy at all, but since you have to take it twice a day, have him take the first dose as soon as he gets up in the morning since he'll most likely be wide awake then, and then take the second dose 12 hours later-bedtime.

I hope it helps him! It's smart for him to start taking it now, the sooner the better since it takes up to 2 weeks for it to fully work.
