I didn't take the post to be racist at all.
OK, so I ask again--what else do those references and posts mean? If I am missing a non racist reason for reference to a "prosperous" nation of Rhodesia and the people from there "getting what they deserve" please tell me what it is. I am enuinely asking---you liked the post---why? What did it mean to you?

Unfortunately, my current point position doesn't permit me to answer publicly.

Huh? If you did not think it meant anyhting untoward why would that be something you cannot say publicly?

But, feel free to PM me then. I would like to know what that statement means that does not have major racist overtones. I cannot come up with anyhting. You liked that post specifically--there must be a reason. Please explain it to me. Thanks.

My post stated a fact that the country of Rhodesia was prosperous, but was eventually an economic catastrophe after a dictatorial takeover (and changed its name to Zimbabwe).
The people who took over the country happened to be black. Does that mean it cannot be spoken of?
I have no affiliation with any white supremacist groups and do not read their literature. This was based on my knowledge of history.

There was no "country" of Rhodesia, so that is the first problem with said "facts---there was a territory under UK control known by that name. Less than 5% of the population (the white minority) maintained all political control and most land and wealth by laws written to keep that control in white hands only (the land appropriation act of the 1930s being the big start). For the majority of people it was not a prosperous situation. That's about like speaking wistfully about the "prosperous south in the early 1800s" Yeah, the people who had control and money and property did well, but the peopel opressed becuase of hteir skin color did not.

Why not look back on the "prosperous" Ndebele Kingdom instead? While this was still one group of people overtaking others to create a larger kingdom, overall the majority was far more prosperous, fairly treated and self ruled than they were after Rhodes invaded with white fores, took over and rewrote the laws to favour whites only.

and the later comment that Art made, about people "getting what they deserve"? I am disgusted by such a cruel comment. No group of people "deserves" to live under a brutal dictator. No child deserves to grow up in such circumstances or born into them. NO ONE. It's horrible that after overthrowing an oppressive regime the people have been in even worse conditions beucase of who managed to gain power afterwards. That does not mean that it was wrong to fight against the racial opression ana it sure as heck does not mean that ANYone, any race, and culture "deserves" to be treated as Mugabe has treated people.

It is all so sad and hard to read. I grew up in a country near there, and we had friends who lived there and would come visit us when they could. When I grew up it was Rhodesia.

I am paying close attention.

A territory, not a country. Remember that.

That may not have been your intention, but certainly you can see how it comes across to idealize the time period when the area was under white colonial rule that was prosperous for those elites but violently oppressed the native population? @NHdisneylover nailed it with the comparison to the antebellum south. How would it sound, in a discussion of Atlanta's urban challenges, to wax nostalgic about how much more prosperous and successful the city was in 1850?

I apologize for making assumptions. It's not fair and I was in a bad mood.

But how do you know Rhodesia and not know the history and tension around that area? Was Mubage the best choice for leadership when the country was finally abandoned by British control? Obviously, no. But saying Rhodesia was prosperous? For whom, the 6 million indigenous people or the 600,000 colonials?

And that by getting self rule, they "got what they asked for"?

Believe me, the mods have kept me in line. Give them some credit.

I am not racist, but neither do I subscribe to political correctness.

I'm so confused. Please tell me why it's racist to note that Mugabe and his administration ruined a perfectly viable country? And let's not even mention the human rights abuses.
