Yucky preferred view at BWV, what would you do?

We are currently at BWV with a preferred view. We spent 40 extra points for this over our 5 night stay...... and our view is of a large tree. We can't see the Luna pool at all except from one balcony of our two bedroom unit and even it is highly obstructed. We could stay at OKW for 5 nights or at our home resort VWL for 3 nights for the point difference. We did request a boardwalk or garden view when we made our reservations several months ago. I know that pool view is also preferred, but the tree obstructs everything.

Should we write this off as a learning experience or should we let someone know how we feel?

We haven't let anyone know because when we checked in the cast member said that the resort was full. I guess there's lots of people here due to Vero being closed and the hurricanes.

Other that this it's been a wonderful experience.....it's our first time in a two-bedroom. Our room is perfect otherwise. We check out Friday.

Any advice? Thanks!

In response to the "what would you do" question...my answer would be nothing. At every resort there are always going to be rooms with better or worse views than others.

On our first trip to OKW we got a golf course view, 2nd floor room close to the HH. Wonderful room.

Second trip we had a woods view close to the main road. Fair amount of noise...zero view.

It's just the luck of the draw.

You mention the 40 point difference in points. I'm assuming that's the difference between Standard and Preferred view. Was a Standard View room even an option at the time of booking? Those rooms often aren't even available to book at the 7-month window.

If everything else about the room is "perfect" while the resort is at 100% capacity, I'd thank my lucky stars for a great room and hope for a better view next time.

Just my $.02...

I agree with rjkraz, one persons perfect view may not be anothers. I think if the room is up to expectations the view is secondary and there aren't that many standard view rooms at BWV.

Personally I would just write it off as a learning expereince (but maybe mention it to the front desk on the way out, just as an FYI) but that is just me. If you move you might end up having to pay additional points and if you asked for a room change within the resort you would have to pay the housekeeping maintenace fees. Just seems silly to me, but then again I am not a balcony sitter. If you are the type that likes to hang out on the balcony and people watch then I might have a different opinion on the situation, but I would just shrug it off, enjoy the vacation and remember it for next time. :sunny:

I would make a note of the room and when I made future reservations ask that it not be that room!! We had a terrific studio in August and when we made reservations for Thanksgiving time, MS asked how we liked our room in August. Told her we loved it, why? Her answer was that she would note that we loved that view and would like another one that was similar. Will it happen? Probably not but it's nice to have it noted on our request. I think we may have been spoiled by our very first trip Home. I'm not sure we'll ever get as good a view again!! Hope your future trips work out better view-wise!!

You can't request a boardwalk view, you have to actually reserve it. I've heard of worse preferred views, such as the back of the pool slide or the valet parking lot. All you could do is ask for a room change and pay the $40 cleaning fee.

DVC made a mistake with the standard and preferred view. Remember that ALL units were the same and then they made the standard view LESS points. Then recently they separated out BW view as a separate reservations. In reality the designations is not actually related to view but more to location. It's not intended to say you have a good view, only that you don't have BW view or parking lot view. Some are better than others, I'd say you have nothing to complain about in my estimation.

As was said, every resort has its lousy views. And since DVC operates at or near capacity at all times, someone needs to get them. You could be at your home of VWL and have the dumpster view. When I first got here, there used to be a running joke about someone who got to OKW and complained about the same thing you are - the tree outside their balcony that didn't give them a view. Then there are the people who have a great view of Luna Park, and read too much Stephen King and would love your tree blocking that scary clown.

I wouldn't say anything at all when I leave. What will it accomplish? They aren't cutting down their landscaping. They aren't going to restructure that side of the building for points. And people with much worse views haven't managed to get refunded points. It might help you vent, and if it does that, it might be worth mentioning.

DVC is a very flexible timeshare. But something is lost in the flexibilty - predictibilty of unit. The traditional timeshare had you in the same unit every year during the same week. With DVC, you get to choose your vacation time, your unit size, even your resort easily. But you won't get to choose your unit.

I've said it before. I think people are too hung up on views. I wouldn't pay extra points (or dollars) for a view. I find sometimes we get great views, other times not so great. In our case, the view never detracts from the total experience. (Not to say I love the dumpster view at VWL...)

I don't get hung up on views.

You couldn't have a BW view unless you actually reserved it, so don't be disappointed there. Not the resorts fault.

We asked for a water view at OKW two years ago and got the full crown of a tree smack dab in the middle of the view from our deck. Had to sit on the floor of the porch to see the water through the branches. So point difference or not - you can get that tree view anywhere.

We didn't complain. Just the luck of the draw. Remember not all luck is good luck.

I think every room will have something bad and many things good about it. I know that you are paying for a preferred view but there maybe other advantages. I have stayed in preferred rooms at BWV tat have great views but:

Noisy Nieghbors
far from elivator
problems with the room

Every room will have advantages and no rooms are perfect. My advice take what what you get and make the best of it.

It's my understanding that if they say you have a boardwalk view when you book the room, then you are guaranteed. I just changed an April reservation and standard views were all taken, as were Boardwalk.

Like Libertybelle though we spend very little time on the balcony so views aren't that important. I was happy to get what I did.

It could be worse..... You could be looking across your work desk at your boss.... !!

The worst view at Disney is a million times better than the best view at work!!

;)

::yes::

Next month we will be booking our first trip home to BWV. We will also be bringing both sets of GP's. Since, for many, it will be the 1st trip to Disney, which category would give you the best chance of Illuminations views? (Just want to increase our odds.)

Kim

Unless I am able to secure a BW view, I always try to get standard view rooms as they are every bit as lovely a view as most preferred view at alot less points. Preferred view rooms are justnot worth the extra points...I've rarely had one I would rave about in comparison to the standard. It's take what you can get and hope you aren't on the ground floor behind the utility shed like I was. I was told because I had ground floor access to the pool it was considered preferred. Go fiqure. If view is important then either Boardwalk or standard. You can't really see the parking lots and valet area is a fun place to people watch.

As has been pointed out, your room was the "luck of the draw". The good news is, you have many more years of vacation experiences to go, and many will include lovely views, I'm sure.

So, to answer the question in your post title, I'd do nothing except enjoy my vacation! :)

IMHO, if I used 40 extra points for a view of any kind and was looking at a tree outside my window, I would very politely mention it to the manager. The way I personally feel about any vacation, (or hotel stay for that matter) is that if I choose to spend my money there (in the purchase of a DVC, any other timeshare or hotel stay), and I am on vacation, and there is something that I am not happy with, I'd mention it. I wouldn't be nasty or insistant, but I would definitely express my disappointment, it doesn't hurt to let them know how you feel. On the flip side, if I am very happy with something, I'd go out of my way to let the manager know, and to compliment the staff.

I wouldn't expect anything specifically to be done about it, and I'd keep note of the room number, but I'd have to speak my mind. I find the staff and management to be very courteous, helpful and accommodating, and receptive. After all, they are there to make sure you are happy with your timeshare, vacation and accommodations. Our first time ever booking a preferred view we received a room like yours. The only difference being we were in a studio and the tree covered the entire balcony. The front desk did inform me at check-in that this tree would be in the way. I was a little upset at first as we have received better standard views. However, I never had time to sit on the balcony anyway and when I booked there were no standard views available. Sometimes you get the good view and sometimes you don't.

Personally, the little things such as what view I got never bothered me before I started reading these boards.
