You've been randomly selected...

When did the metal detectors go in. I haven't been to WDW since 2013, and planning a trip this June. We were at Disneyland in 2014 and don't remember them there either at that time. I'll have to remember to not carry much in my pockets so I won't have to empty too much if I am "randomly" selected.

Has anyone actually set the metal detectors off?
I told them I had bilateral knee replacements and they said to go through anyway.
I went through and nothing was set off- now when I go through the airport detectors my knees always trigger the alarm, so I'm wondering if the metal detectors are even turned on!!

I broke my ankle in December & now have a few screws & a plate from the surgery. I'm planning to be in the parks in May & since I always wear cargo shorts so I don't have to carry a bag, I am thinking I will be picked at least once out of the few days I'm there. When I asked my doctor about getting a card I had read about to use for airport security, etc., he said most of the time it wouldn't set the detector off & you just explain you have had surgery & they use the wand & send you on your way. It's also obvious since I have scars on either side of my ankle now. The other reason I would be more likely to be chosen is if I decide to wear the orthopedic boot if that would still be necessary at that point. But it is what it is & I do appreciate the extra security so I will grin & bear it.

Fall of 2015. Just a few months ago.
BTW, they are not "installed " at the gates.
They are portable/temporary scanner booths, staffed by non-Disney staff.

...for additional security screening.

Entered the parks a total of nine times earlier this week.
"Randomly" selected for the metal detector three times; once each at EP (no bags line), DHS (bag check), and MK (bag check).
Only once did I leave my phone behind.

Why can't I have that luck for other events?

What do you look like? Any Middle Eastern features?

If I get randomly selected I'm going to act all thrilled and be like "YES!!! I've heard about this! We won a night stay in the Cinderella Castle Suite! This is so awesome! Hey everyone! I'm going to be spending tonight in Cinderellla's castle!" And I'll like be acting like those people on The Price is Right after they hear their name and "come on down!" over the loud speakers.

I did get selected today. I tried to act like I won something. I was like "Yes! What did I win?" The security person was just like "you need to walk through the metal detector" and I was like "I didn't win anything?"

It wasn't as funny as I'd hoped....

I was only selected just once at Epcot IG this last week. The guards were incredibly nice and chatted with me.

I have a feeling that my DH will be "randomly" selected for the extra checks multiple times on our trip next week. He will not be feeling the disney magic :(

He gets "randomly" selected for extra security checks at every airport we ever go to. We never have figured out what it is about him that always makes him a target for the extra checks.
That used to be my DH.....from about 2002-2007 with all the post-9/11 extra random checks, my DH would get selected "randomly" EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. I figured that a 6'2" 200+ lbs caucasian male must look like a terrorist to the TSA to be tagged as a "random" every time he flew. When we traveled a lot this past summer (I was on a total of 14 planes this summer and he was on 10 of them with me) I kept waiting for it....but not once did he get pulled out. Finally!!!!

I am not feeling the Disney magic after being randomly selected 7 times in a row. With bags, without doesn't seem to matter. I asked how it was random have been selected each time I enter the park. His response was he just picks at random, when I mentioned his ear piece tells me different he looked a little sheepish.
I realize it shouldn't be as irritating as it makes me feel but I am irritated, it starts what should be a fun day on a sour note. If it truly was random, if it wasn't every single time I enter a park I wouldn't get so irritated. My husband is very easy going and he is irritated at this point. We will go again next week, I'm certain I will be selected again.

HA! I did the same thing, only she did play along a little: "You win...a free walk through this metal detector! WOOOOO!"

It was the only time I got selected (so far); I like to say it was because I embarrassed the guy checking my bag ("What's in this pouch, miss?" Um...girl things. "I'm sorry, miss, what's in there?" TAMPAX. IT'S TAMPAX, SIR. New security CM: "Ma'am, you've been randomly selected!") but honestly it was probably just luck of the draw.

Cheer up....
You likely don't look like a trouble maker therefore you're picked because you'll be an easy scan that they can add to their daily tally sheet.
When we go next month I think I'll put on my "DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT *&%#ing WITH ME" look and see if I get "randomly" picked. :D
Be sure to let us know how that works out for you. :rolleyes1

Returned last weekend - had to go through first time first day and never after that (5 days). Don't recall what face I had on...

In the 3.5-4 months since the metal detectors have been installed,I've done 6 visits to the parks,I would say in those visits I've probably had to go through at least 20+ bag checks while entering parks, number of times picked to go through the detectors, zero!!!

My Mom has had so many surgeries and is full of hardware, pins/rods etc. She was worried about this and had also asked her doctor for a note. It was not needed, it never went off at the airport, so I doubt the Disney ones would. We were there last year before the Disney scanners.

My husband works security at WDW. There is some misinformation on here. While the metal detectors are portable, the security guards do work for Disney now. They all had to be specially trained for it before Disney security could take over. Also, people are randomly selected. My husband told me how they do this, but I don't want to say anything here.

I haven't done the WDW entry yet, but our 5 day DLR in February resulted in only two times I wasn't randomly selected, once at the main gate and once at the Grand Californian entrance. I must have went in an average of 3 times a day. The main gate security was fine, but the GCH entrance was more like going through TSA. It got a little old after a while, but didn't impact my trip that much. Perhaps, those of us who have been actually randomly selected too many times look worried that we'll be randomly selected and get chosen by our body language?

I can tell you that I travel a lot for work so go through screening all the time. About 2 years ago I had a bad wrist fracture after a car accident. I have a plate and 5 screws. Never sets off the airport detectors.

I, too, was randomly selected at every park we went to, during our end of January/beginning of February trip this year. It didn't seem to matter whether I was carrying our family's bag or not. When my DH had our bag, he wasn't selected, but I got selected wherever we went. It wasn't a big deal...I actually got "danced" over to the metal detector one day by a lovely gentleman CM. They were all very nice, and it didn't take long to go through the process. But I did wonder why I was selected repeatedly?? Hhhmmm...

As a security CM who has been randomly selected at EPCOT the last three times I've gone and once at my own park and has to select people almost everyday I can promise you that it is very random. If you step back for a few minutes and watch it's actually pretty easy to see how we do it and it has nothing to do with what you are wearing or carrying and I have never ever heard anyone on the radio telling someone who to select.
