Your favorite lesser known movies?

Lady Hawk is one of my favorite movies. Michelle Pfeiffer, Rutger Hauer and Matthew Broderick star in it.

Best In Show.

OMG...I laughed until I cried throughout this whole movie. Cannot wait to see a Mighty Wind!

mtemm,
I also loved "Best of Show!" For those of you who liked that one, see "Waiting for Guffman", by the same team (director, actors etc.) in the same style...mockumentary. It is just as clever and funny!

"Foul Play" with Chevy Chase & Goldie Hawn.

"Fun With Dick & Jane" with George Segal & Jane Fonda.

American History X - a little graphic at times since the movies about racism

Just wanted to chime in that I also like Lady Hawk and Strange Brew. ALso I crack up whenever I see Top Secret - total spy spoof with early Val Kilmer. Cheesy humor.

Haven't seen anyone mention Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension yet. This is DH's favorite campy movie.

"Top Secret" is a good one! We haven't watched it in a few years.
Might have to dig out the video tonight. :p

"Strictly Ballroom" (1992) - offbeat comedy about a male dancer who goes against the rules and creates his own style of dancing.

"Jean De Florette" (1986) -- French historical drama about a battle (between farmers) over a valuable natural spring in a remote French farming community. Gerard Depardieu, Elisabeth Depardieu, Yves Montand
Part Two is:
"Manon of the Spring" (1986) sometimes titled "Jean De Florette Part 2"
Great movies!

Dancer, Texas? It's a story about 4 teenage boys who are graduating from high school in a VERY small town out in west Texas. They made a pact when they were young to go out to california. It's very funny, and shows the weekend after their graduation.

There's also Suburbia. Filmed in south Austin, I've driven by the convenience store it was filmed at. It's about this group of 20 something's hanging out 1 night. One of them lives in his parent's garage in a tent.
There are some funny moments in this as well, especially with Steve Zahn in it.

How about Hands on a hard body-filmed in Longview, TX?
It's the story of a Nissan dealer who holds an annual contest for some poor slobs who compete against one another to win
a truck not even worth the change in Michael Dell's glovebox.
There's a scene with one guy who is the husband of one of the contestants that is just hilarious. It is actually a documentary.

For the romantics, there is the film Before Sunrise, filmed in Austria. It's the story of two teenagers who meet for one night in Vienna before the young man returns to the states.
Richard Linkletter directs.

I've also enjoyed the movie short cuts with Huey Lewis and Lyle Lovett in it. It's woven with a number of big name actors in it, with all different stories, somehow tying in together. Lyle Lovett plays a baker who demands this couple who has lost their child to come pick up the cake he baked for their child's birthday.
Huey Lewis is a guy who finds a body while fishing with his buddies. He's also a dad whose kids find a dog, then Tim Robbins is a cop who comes back and takes the dog because his wife and kids are sobbing over the loss of their dog. Huey Lewis stands outside and says-"Hey what are you doing? That's my kid's dog!"

"Strictly Ballroom" and "Best in Show" are terrific! Other favorites of mine are "Local Hero", "A Walk on the Moon", and "Making Mr. Right".

Some GREAT ones listed here...! Just saw "Shall We Dance" last week at Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival, so very appropriate for this thread!

Saw "The DISH" on Disney Wonder as part of "Film Festival at Sea" with Ebert & Roeper.

VERY funny, "Best in Show"!!!

For SSB, even though a semi-mainstream film... still feel that EVERYONE should have seen "Spirited Away"... I thought just a fantastic film, that did not get near enough attention in the US. (Is the largest grossing film ever in Japan, having surpassed Titanic")

Montessori, weren't they all so good? You WILL dance with Tina Sparkle!

Two of my favs are "Hope and Glory" and "Au Revoir Les Enfants." Both are set in WWII and are autobiographical from a child's perspective. "Hope and Glory" will make you laugh, "Au Revoir" will make you cry (unless you're on a date with a new guy, then you'll just get a bar in your throat).

"American Sweethearts"- fairly recent, it came and went with no fanfare. Its a comedy about a group of cheerleaders who stage a robbery! Sounds dumb, but I swear it is really FUNNY!
