Your favorite hotels - how do they compare to Disney?

My favorite is definately Kona Village on the Big Island of Hawaii, I don't think theres much that can beat it. Certainly not Disney in terms of grounds and service.

I visited this resort in last April. I stayed at the Fairmont on the Big Island, but I thought of splitting a stay with this one next time. It looked really neat! Authentic, right?

My favorites have been
#1 Hyatt Kauai
#2 Four Seasons Maui
#3 Fairmont Kea Lani Maui - for the suite, not so much the hotel
#4 Adare Manor - Ireland
#5 Animal Kingdom Lodge

I LOVE Disney but I dont think their hotels/resorts are in the same class as many other places we have been.

Cool, we've stayed at and enjoyed many of the same hotels! I should look into the Adare Manor if I ever end up taking the Great Britain trip I've always thought about :flower:

Ladyhawke10 - I noticed that too and for our next Hawaii Trip in 2007 we are staying at the Princeville and 4Seasons on the Big Island and havent decided on which one but either Manele Bay or the Lodge at Koele!

Adare Manor was lovely!

What an INCREDIBLE trip you have planned! Sounds like pure heaven. Have you been to the Four Seasons on the Big Island yet? It has outdoor lava rock showers and a lava rock pool (one of many pools onsite) that has fish in it so you can snorkle. It's called King's Pond. We were last on the Big Island in April and are going again next summer, but I haven't started much planning yet--except I was thinking of going between Maui and Kauai and staying at both Hyatts for the pools (my son is six and is really into the pools right now!). But anyway, Lanai is one of my favorite locations, and I personally think the Lodge at Koele is the most beautiful hotel I've ever stayed in. It's not a beach hotel, which some don't like, but it's an interesting contrast if you're coming from another island and have already stayed at a beach hotel. It has great horseback riding and they even let my son ride (supervised) when he was just four. Manele Bay is also spectacular and is more similiar to the luxury beach hotels like the Hyatts, Princeville or the Four Seasons Maui. Koele is fairly unique, but it's all in what you're looking for. Have a wonderful trip--it sounds fantastic :cloud9:

One hotel I have stayed at that compares well with Disney especially on the theming aspect is Big Cedar Lodge, just south of Branson MO (its about 10 miles south). Located in the ozark woods, its the REAL wilderness lodge, it has a main entrance check in hall, and then you can rent a luxury cabin or stay in one of their lodges. The theming is spectacular, the restaurants are very good, the rooms are MASSIVE and Big Cedar being owned by Bass Pro is the only lodging outside of Disney that has its own artisans to create the iron work throughout the resort. Very cool.

Plus pricing is VERY affordable.

Well, are we talking favorite or nicest? Because for me they are two different things.

My favorite hotel on the earth is the Mirror Lake Inn, in Lake Placid. It is not the most luxurious place I've ever stayed though.

We always get the same room, #439, and they will guarantee a specific room at the time of booking. It's not even their biggest room, and not a suite. But it's at the very end of the top floor, very, very quiet. Because it's on the end there's a window in the bathroom--I know, I'm easily amused.

It's a fairly large room with a king bed, settee, table and two chairs, fireplace, rocker, and a small bar sink with a coffee maker and dorm fridge. It's also got a nice balcony with a couple rockers and a small table that overlooks Mount Marcy and Mirror Lake.

The entire resort is impeccably clean, this is one place that they blow WDW away. The service is also very good. Extremely friendly and gracious, although generally not "refined" like you would find in a five star resort. (Mirror Lake Inn gets four diamonds, thre stars). With only 128 rooms, service is very personalized and it's never crowded.

The overall theme is that of a mountain inn without being overly "woodsy". Hardwood floors, over stuffed chairs, abundant fireplaces and windows with views. The spa is decadent, world-class.

My husband and I go there every year for a long weekend (or very long weekend LOL!) and it's the one place that keeps drawing us back over, and over, and over. If you are an outdoorsy person, you'll love the area. We aren't really, but we use our time there to just regroup, read, nap...

As far as pricing in comaparision, it's about the same as a honeymoon room at the GF, no jacuzzi but it has a fireplace. Room size might be slightly larger at the MLI.

Second to the Mirror Lake Inn is another resort I see already mentioned, the Rimrock in Banff. I prefer the MLI as it's smaller and more intimate, and the food is better. The views are spectacular! Price wise with the exchange rate it's probably comparable to a lagoon room at the GF.

Ladyhawke-
Kona Village is pretty authentic. It's an especially great family atmosphere I think, I remember going there as a child and having the most fun in the world in the childrens program. The food can't be beat and it's really neat to have your own little Hale. I highly reccomend it. I've also stayed at 4Seasons,Mauna Lani, and the Orchid on the Big Island and prefer Kona Village over them all.

Well I am donning my flame suit here, but I do not find any of the resorts at disney to be even close to some other hotels and resorts we have stayed at. My personal favorite is the Ritz Carlton Club in St Thomas. My girlfriends and I went last Feb and had a three bedroom suite that was absolutely stunning. Service was nothing less than stellar. 3 times daily housekeeping, refrigerator stocked upon arrival with our requests, a spa that was amazing. We are headed back again this FEB  My second two favorites are both city hotels, Trump International on Central Park and The Manderian Oriental in NYC. Both are just top notch in service and amenities. Also love the Boca Raton resort. My favorite Orlando resort is by far the Ritz Carlton Grand Lakes, service was unbeatable.

I stayed at George V, Paris, France last December. Beautiful hotel and the service was impecable. Location could not be beat. Of course I was told by many that this was not the "true" Parisian experience but I loved it and they cater more to Americans than some of the other hotels in the area. I also really like the Beverly Hills Hotel in California. You get an extremely nice room with all the amenities and private patio for less than I pay for concierge at WDW hotels. The Graceland Suite at Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando isn't bad either. :teeth:
