OK, we've done school lunch ideas, but what about snacks? It's the second week of school and I'm already wandering around the kitchen wondering what to pack! Seem the kids eat snacks more times a day than they eat meals, so what do you pack for your kids?

well, we have a 4 drawer plastic thing in our kitchen, with snack food/juice boxes in it.

Inside there, are single serve packs of ritz bitz, wheat thins, granola bars, pringles etc.

Some days, they take an apple, other days grapes etc.

Its hard with my DD's as they eat snack at recess....so it's gotta be something easy to eat!

I buy the snacks at Costco, so we buy in bulk. It's probably cheaper to buy boxes of ritz, wheat thins etc.. but this way i buy in bulk the few times a year I go to Costco, and they are individually wrapped so they stay fresh.

Kari (9) loves the packages of pretzels and cheese dip.

I made my SS homemade cookies, cupcakes, and brownies. But he also liked chips and cookies. I like to give him a variety of different snacks to choose from.

LOL..See the my post on drawing a blank...there were some great suggestions in there :D

Me, too. Especially since DD doesn't eat very much in general, I like her to have a variety each day to choose from, she certainly doesn't eat it all. Besides her cold pizza tomorrow, she's taking baby carrots and some blueberries, as well as a slim jim, granola bar, fruitees, goldfish crackers, pringles, and a mini Nestle brownie candy bar. She'll bring 1/2 of the snacks home, if not more.

Cookies, popcorn, pretzels, cheese sticks or cheese shapes, apple slices, grapes and other fruits are a few others I sometimes add.

My DS teacher (K) insists on only healthy snacks. I sent him in with a granola bar with cookie pieces once and got a nasty note at the end of the day from her.

Oh boy would I be sending a note right back to her/him if he/she sent that home to me!! I send my duaghter with what I know she will eat...sure I can send her carrots and they would come right home uneaten. She normally gets cookies and she also gets the squeezable tube of peanut butter and crackers and makes herself peanut butter on crackers for lunch. I usually pack 3 things for a snack and she will eat one and bring the other two home, the next day she gets those two, eats one and brings the other home, next day she takes the last snack and eats it then we start all over again....she had a Kudo Bar, Potatoe Chips, Chocolate Chip cookies last week...she also has Oreos, Chocolate Chip Granola bars which she will eat onle in a while. I make sure she has a decent breakfast which is a trial as it is since she doesn't like to eat that early and I make sure she eats a decent dinner....during the day I am happy she eats anything at all, I don't need the school policing what she eats!

My kids get cookies of all sorts, $25 bag chips, fruit cups, pringles, fuit sncks or roll ups. We go to the store everyweek and they get to pick.

Great post!

WOW you guys feed lots of yummy stuff !!! Can I come ova !!!!!

MyDD is bit heavy, so snack/lunch is ALWAYS a hassle ! Balancing letting her "be a kid" and me being a good Mom !

If I sent all those snacks with her, NONE would come back!

I buy weekly, fruit I mostly give her at home. That way I know she is eating it. But for school, I buy cookies that are low fat, like Smartwell brand, single applesauce, granola/breakfast bars.
She likes all "sweet" stuff ! I buy the boxes and I buy SNACK size baggies. Each Sunday I put a serving in each baggie for all the snacks I have. Then I have a plastic container and I put all the snacks in there. This is the school snack bin and it goes in my room ! this works well for us. That way, I make a sandwich, grab the snacks and drink, and its a snap.

I don't do drink boxes, they are too fattening for her. She usually has lemonade or flavored water or milk.

My daughter can eat, so I have to be careful ! Would love to hear more snack ideas too !

FYI .....

someone mentioned fruit roll ups ...... I just want to tell you, my dentist says they are the WORST thing to give your kids. They stick to the teeth and get into the crevasses of the teeth and cause decay. And since they do not brush well being kids ...

.... I just jumped on-line and here is what I found, I know we know this stuff, but why not "brush up" on it :teeth:

Sticky snacks such as raisins, fruit roll-ups, caramels, dried fruits, and honey cling to the chewing surface of teeth as well as collecting at the gum line and can be more detrimental to dental health than other forms of sugar.

It must be remembered that the frequency of eating sugar and starches and the length of time exposed to the teeth is much more damaging than the amount of sugar consumed. For example, sucking on a cough drop, a life saver or a tootsie-pop can be much more harmful than eating several pieces of candy. In fact, there is a substance in chocolate that blocks a bacterial enzyme that leads to plaque build-up and cavities. This protective tannin-like substance is also found in cocoa, tea, coffee and unsweetened fruit juices.

To prevent your child from getting cavities, pediatric dentists recommend these simple steps:

Make sure your child's teeth are cleaned every day. While a good approach is to brush following every meal, this is not a requirement. However, it's a good idea to brush the teeth especially well before the child goes to bed.

Make sure your child's teeth are protected by fluoride. Fluoride acts as a shield on the teeth and will help retard the actions of the bacteria in the mouth.

Practice healthy snacking by reading labels for sugar content, keeping healthy ready-to-eat snacks on hand, seeing that your child snacks less often and avoiding sweet snacks at bedtime (this includes sweetened drinks) as the saliva flow is lowest at night.
The realistic approach to preventing cavities and keeping healthy teeth for a lifetime is a sensible and nutritious diet; regular oral care, including daily brushing and flossing; and dental check-ups every six months.

he he he you'de think I was in the dental field ! I am not, but I did spend 10,000 on my teeth this year ! They were bad due to NOT brushing well and eating bad as a kid.............

And actually I am supportive of this. That way when I try to send something healthy - I don't get the "so-and-so gets chips," she gets cookies," etc.

Some of the things we have done for DD - who BTW is a very picky eater, (and things have to be "dry" i.e. no yogurt, applesauce, no apples, oranges etc)

Cheese and crackers
Sun Chips
Pretzels
Graham crackers (except the chocolate ones.)
string cheese
grapes
crackers - without cheese
Cheerios

Last year, her teacher was very specific on the sugar/fructose content of the item. We solved this by bringing all snacks in a baggie-not the "snack" packaging with all the nutrition labeling. Plus if it was a "individually" packed item - some teachers only let the kids eat 1 snack - so if it is "repacked" in a baggie - parent can determine the snack size - not the teacher.

Yikes!!! $10,000 in one year on dental care???? That would motivate me to research as well :)

Our snacks--

graham cracker sticks and yogurt

frozen grapes

celery/peanut butter/raisins

bread/cheese/sandwich meat cut into shapes with cookie cutters

homemade trail mix--cheerios, raisins, pretzels, goldfish, and a very few m&m's

veggies and ranch dip--one of the only ways my boys will eat veggies

Good luck!!!

My kids love Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal so I make trail mix with it. I add raisins, yogurt raisins, tiny marshmallows, cheeries and sometimes a few tiny m&m's.

They also like graham cracker sticks (Scooby Snacks are their favorite). I give them a little container with a spoonful of Nutella to dip them in.

Ants on a log (celery, pb and raisins)

Yogurt dip (equal parts yogurt/cool whip) with apple slices or strawberries to dip in it.

I would be doing the same if my daughter was on the heavy side too but her whole life we have had the opposite problem...she was born at 5 pounds and we had to go for weight checks every month for 14 months because she was always off the bottom of the chart for weight. It took until she was over 4 to hit the 30 pound mark. She couldn't face forward in her car seat until she was 2! A typical lunch for her would be 2 Ritz cracker "sandwiches" with peanut butter on them, for Dinner it might be 3 small fish nuggets (not store bought, I make them myself with fresh flounder or bass) and if I am lucky half a ear of corn on the cob-one artichoke is a whole meal by itself for her as is half a slice of pizza. So I could send her with anything to school and most would come home. She goes to the Dentist every 6 months from the time she was 2 for cleanings and check ups and so far no cavities.
