Can anyone tell me why they decided to kill off John Abbott? Was it simply the storyline (which doesn't seem plausible to me because he's been on the show so many years) or did he choose not to renew his contract for some reason - maybe retirement or health issues?

I don't know why, but hopefully someone else will... I was wondering as well.

Friday was very much a tear-jerker, I even called my Mom and told her to watch last week because she has sort given it up because of her job, but I knew she would want to watch.

Can someone give me the Cliff Note version of what happened? Did they take him off the ventilator to let him go? Was everyone in the room when he died? What's the deal with showing Phyllis' baby?

He decided not to renew his contract. I was crying too. I can't stand Gloria or Glozilla as I like to call her. I wanted to choke her.

Cliff's notes version:

Michael was able to get the Governor to release John from prison with time served. He suffered a stroke. He was taken to the hospital and at the hospital he had another stroke and was put on a ventilator. Come to find out John had signed a DNR. Glozilla did not agree with it and she did not want to pull the plug. Since she is his "wife" she had last say in it. They did many tests on John and each one came out saying that he would basically be in a vegatative state and would need to be tube fed and need a respirator. Jack wanted to honor John's wishes and have him disconnected but, Glozilla was going crazy and wanted to selfishly keep him alive against his wishes. Her eyes looked like they were gonna pop out whenever she talked to Jack about it. Anyways, Jack told her that he was gonna sue her for legal guardianship of John if she did not pull the plug. Ashley then started getting the Glozilla germ and started thinking that it would be a possibility that John would make it. Glozilla finally decided after making everybody crazy that she was ready to let John go.
