Young Couple looking to buy DVC Resale

Hello everyone!

So I've been scouring the boards, reading every bit of information that I possibly can and I believe that purchasing resale makes the most sense for my husband and I...we just celebrated our 2nd year anniversary and really want to invest in DVC before we start having kids. We intend to visit 1-2 times a year and are thinking if we buy a smaller contract to start (looking for AKV), then we can use that while we stay for runDisney events/vacations in the more immediate future. Then when we need more points down the road when we have kids, we can buy a second contract to add on to what we already have, probably at a different resort so we can have 11 month booking privileges at 2 different locations.

Is that fairly sound thinking or are there flaws to buying multiple small contracts? I'm just thinking that not only does this make more financial sense for us now, it helps to spread out the cost over time a little bit more instead of having to pay for large lump contract at once. (We are not really interested in financing this purchase; much more interested in paying off each contract up front.)

Sounds like you have a good plan and you know what you are doing. My only advise is to make sure that you buy a resort that you love.

We were in the same boat as you. Knew kids would be somewhere in the not-so-distant future and we wanted to be able to enjoy the points before that occurred. We just closed on our first contract (150 points at BWV) and we'll probably add on another 100 points or so sometime in the next few years. We used Sharon from Fidelity and everything went very smoothly.

Like Bill said, it sounds like you have a solid plan. Do lots of research about how the system works and feel free to PM me with any questions.

Thanks so much for the input, Bill & Missy. We aren't looking to buy immediately yet, so I have more time to keep reading, but hopefully in the next year or so we will start the process. Just wanted to make sure my plotting with small contracts didn't have any snags I was missing

This sounds like a great strategy and can allow you to book split stays at the 11 month window. We bought at BWV and BLT for exactly this reason.

The downsides are very minor, but here they are: two contracts means two closing costs, so that's an extra $425ish over buying just one contract. No biggie. Also, having two contracts with two different use years can be a little more difficult to manage. Again, not a big deal. And, both of these downsides (and any others that I can't think of right now) are completely outweighed by the fact that you are paying for your purchases up front and not financing. It sounds like you are planning, saving and then spending, which is a great way to approach DVC purchases.

Bottom line, it sounds like you did your research and you have a great plan. Good luck and have fun!

I understand that to mean making sure both of our eventual contracts have the same Use Year, right? Is there anyway to change the UY of a contract we want if it doesn't have the UY we want? Or will we be limited to only purchasing contracts with the same UY as whatever our first contract will be?

Also, is there a UY that is better that others? Comes up with more availability than others?

yes, they need to have the same use year month AND be titled exactly the same.

depends on when you travel the most often. you want to travel early in your UY and ideally, never in the last 3 months or so. i have an oct UY which is great for nov-dec trips and would be bad for july-aug-sept trips - but i hate orlando in the summer.

just remember that you cannot combine pts from different resorts at 11 months out. say you own at AKV and BCV and want a concierge villa at AKV:

at 11 months out, you can book AKV with banked AKV pts, current AKV pts, borrowed AKV pts or AKV pts transferred in from another AKV owner, but only with AKV pts...

pts from your BCV contract can be used to book AKV only inside 7 months (and vice-versa).

This is exactly what we are doing. We bought a 100 point contract at SSR. This is covering us ok for now. We might add on another 30 points or so in the near future. Long term we may decide to double that but for now we are happy.

If you don't mind me asking, who did you purchase your resale through? And how do you use your 100 pts (how many trips per year, etc.?) Do you wish you had purchased a few more points initially?

We used Sharon at Fidelity. We had zero problems with them. I had talked to Sharon about what we were looking for and she called me when she had a contract up that she thought would work. We do wish we purchased a few more points. The contract we bought was a great price that we couldn't pass up.

Last year we stayed at a studio at Aulani for 6 nights. We had to buy around 14 one time points.

This year we are getting 7 nights in a studio at a variety of resorts. We had to buy 19 one time points.

We are pretty happy with how much we are getting out of our membership. For now we are ok with using the one time points. We liked starting with a small contract to see how it work for us.
