Has anyone eaten dinner at the San Angel Inn with small children? I've heard that it is very dark in the restaurant. My girls are 3.5 and 2 years old and I'm not sure how comfortable it will be for them. How's the food? I've heard it is good and I love mexican so I would like to go there.
:cheer2:

We were just there in May with DD4 and DS 9months (at the time). He did just fine. It was quite dark, could barely see the menus.
To me the food was just ok. I've had better Mexican at home.
The atmosphere for just me and DH would be nice but nothing much to speak for the kids in my opinion.

In May our 5yo DS begged to eat there. He so wanted to eat there and watch the boats go by. I talked him into Sci-Fi though because he's very picky and wouldn't eat anything there. I would hope with young children in tow they would seat you by the ride/water if you asked to keep the little ones entertained somewhat.

All kids are different, but we had a bad experience. We took my daughter there when she was 3. For some reason (I guess the darkness + unfamiliar surroundings) she was terrified! :scared1: I mean, you'd have thought we were having a picnic in the Haunted Mansion! We tried to get through it by sitting near the boats and buying her a little pottery bird (that she clutched for dear life). Needless to say, the meal just didn't work out.

Have to say its dark for adults. you cannot see what you are eating. But rest assured we sure could taste it and it was awful food. My opinion but many others as well. Especially if you are paying yourself. We left and went to eat somewhere else. ALL 5 of us. If you are from the south anywhere from Cal to TX then this food is not for you. it is nothing like Mexican food in Mexico nor the southern states who know what it is supposed to taste like. Good luck if you should choose.

We live in east Texas and so know both TexMex and 'real' Mexican food. San Angel Inn is neither. It's just plain bad. We've tried it three different times and have yet to find anything decent. The first time our food was literally cold when it came out. The chips are tostitos out of a bag and Pace picante sauce out of a jar. (if you look, just before you go in, you can buy the same bags of tostitos and jars of sauce, in the gift shop area). My grandaughter was the one who finally asked if we could go somewhere else and get 'decent food'. This child loves Mexican food and eats at both local TexMex places, as well as small locally owned authentic Mexican restaurants weekly. She wouldn't touch anything on her plate. The atmosphere is great though. Don't count on being able to sit next to the river though. All three times we've asked to be seated by the river when we checked in, but got to only once.

we were there in Apr, my son who was 17 months at the time had a huge meltdown, so I told my husband what to order for me and him and we headed straight to boat and did the boat ride and he completly calmed down. By the time we got back to our table the food arrived in about a couple of minutes. I thought the food was good, but they have my favorite a chicken taco with pinapple and cilantro I forget what it is called but fabulous, I had a similar thing when we went to cabo san lucas and I thought it was very similar.

These folks have said it well! The food is terrible! We ate there last year because it looked so pretty in pictures we had seen. It does have a lovely atmosphere. But yes, it is dark, and no atmosphere is worth their horrid food. I had awful Mexican TV dinners as a child (back when TV dinners came in aluminum trays!) that were better than their food.

Please, do not do this to your family. :worship:

It is dark, but depending on your child and his mood at the time, there is a lot for him to look at to keep him occupied.

I will put myself out there as someone who loves the food, well as of last May anyway. It's not American Mexican. We have eaten there several times over the years and it's been good and not so good, but we go back because of the atmosphere.

Last May my daughter got the steak (filete something) with cheeses and it was out of this world. We're going back in October and I'm hoping for a good experience again.

HTH,
Candee

we took my daughter there last year (she was 12 mos.) and she seemed to like the music and water/boats. . .the dim lighting didn't bother her. the food IS really bland, just nothing special at all but the atmosphere is fun, very 'disney'

aubriee,

Ditto again to you. Where in east texas??? I do Canton. But we live in far west texas and we know our food. This isn't even a food item. But to anyone who lives up north or just west of Florida probably doesn't know what we are talking about when we mean good mexican food. Never again

We ate there last Friday evening, myself, DW, and DD4. The wait was incredible. Altough we had reservations, we had to wait in line for 15 minutes to check in, then wait another 40 minutes for a table. We had 8:15pm reservations, arrived a little bofore 8 and were hopeing to catch Illuminations. We were seating about 8:55pm. The service was ok. There were not many food choices that my picky DD would eat. She at a little, and fell asleep. My wife and I ordered the filet something or other, with cheese. It was pretty good. They also had sweet tea, which was the only place in Disney we found it. All in all, it is not like any mexican restaurant I have been to. The food is not like Mexican food I am accustomed to in NC, or have had in Texas. I assumed that perhaps it was high end or from so other region of Mexico from what the Mexican immigrants to my area serve.

I love me some authentic Mexico food, and you will too. Great place!

Small world! I was born and raised in Canton for eighteen years. I then lived in Van for the next 25 or so years, before moving to Terrell (about 25 miles west of Canton).:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I agree about San Angel Inn. We love our Mexican food and there are tons of Mexican food restaurants around here (the fast food jokes like Taco Bell and Taco Bueno, the regular Tex Mex places, and locally owned mom-pop places that serve 'real, authentic' Mexican food). I also work with quite a few Mexicans (that are from all over Mexico), who are always bringing food to work. San Angel Inn is not even close.
