You think flying is tough now?

I am going to be tbe odd one out and say i would put up with it no matter the cost of they would let me smoke, let me keep my shoes on at security and bring my own beverages through security. We used to batch up appletinis in water bottles on flights with frinends and have a grand old time. I am sick to death of the circus security has become. My best friend doesn't agree with me and thinks we should do whatever it takes to keep us safe, I tell her I would rather take my chances then get to my gate, want to go out to smoke again, put up with the whole shoes off stuff in the bins thing and all the people who aren't used to flying. I try my best for redeyes where I can pop an ambien and sleep on the whole hellish plane ride. I would also like to see more smoking lounges in terminals. They did away with a completely enclosed one in the Vegas aiport the city of sin that didn't bother anyone. Miami and LAX in certain terminals have them that have no roof on them so it is technically outdoors it just has four glass walls. That is the biggest tick off to me. I fly jetblue as much as I can for their non stop redeyes and sattelite tv with a map to tell me how much further it is til I am out of the prison plane. And then there are the people that wait til 20 rows in front of them completely deplane before even starting to look around for their bags and are oblivious to the others behind them that just want out of the sardine can. So Yeah I would happily stand if they would give me some other perks instead. I am sure I am the lone desenter though.

Also, while we like and expect cheap, we're also used to things being big. Compare the average size of a car in the U.S. to one in Europe.

Not the same though. We are very lucky here in the states that gas is extremely cheap, so we can pretty much afford the SUV's. but what happened when gas hit $4.00 bucks a few summers ago. :rotfl: Everyone and their mammas squealed like a stuck pig. Everyone ranted that the American car makers went under because they were not offering the consumer smaller, more gas effecient (sp?) cars. So it's not only that we like big cars it's also a factor of affordablility of fuel. Europe routinely pays $5 bucks/gallon for petro.

We like cheap.

My predicition is that they will stick in these seats and then offer the regular seats as a premium. They will feed us some crap about how this is really another way they are offering the consumer what they want. Some one on the dis will post "why should I have to pay for a premium seat because you have back issues?" and they will sell out.

I've seen it too many times.
Hey look at Disney. The food has gone beyond bad. almost every one agrees it's becoming lousy but throw in the word "FREE" and we suck it up.
No matter how horrible it gets, if it's cheap or free we will tolerate it. I'm pretty cynical mainly because we've all seen the decline in the airline industry's and no one's boycotted yet.

God bless ya D' ;) I liked to think I had some sort of common sense but I just brought my plane ticket to France in March. $800 bucks. :scared1: I talk a good game but I wonder if some one offered me that seat to Paris for $199 would I pass it up? :rolleyes1

You found an $800 RT to Paris? That's the best fare I've heard from anyone traveling to Europe in some time. Fares have skyrocketed....

Higher airfares is part of the "New Normal" in our economy. Cheap airfare for the masses didn't make the airlines profitable when the credit was flowing like water, and so it definitely won't work now. Airlines have parked a huge number of planes in the desert and now that all the bigs are merged, expect less flights to be available.

I know that RyanAir was toying around with seats like those pictured here, but I'm not sure if they've put them in their planes yet. That CEO is nutty. Just yesterday there was a story where he was floating the idea of having just one pilot and teaching a flight attendant to land the plane in case of an emergency. Seriously.

OMG that looks uncomfortable and it seems like she is ready to fall out of the seat. If that is my only choice to fly then I am not flying.

I see that with the free dining. As long as the food is free it can be absolutely horrible, which it's getting worse year after year. Disneyworld Paris is absolutely 360 degrees different, they will pay the premium price for better product.
It may be a matter of national pride for the French when it comes to food. They have a reputation to uphold. If they tried to pass the swill that they call food in Orlando off on the French they would probably torch the place.

I totally wouldn't mind one of these 'seats' for short trips. I live in PHX and if I could get a great rate I would totally fly to LA or Las Vegas in one of these seats - it's only a 45ish min. flight. I stand longer than that to get on a ride in Disneyland sometimes!! I can see that it wouldn't be a seat for my children since they couldn't reach the floor but for adult travelers I could see these being used for short flights.

I could see southwest doing that. They're already on the track of short hops. You pretty much can't fly anywhere direct, and there's a stop about every hour. While the flights are cheap, and it's nice flying into Dallas Love Field rather than DFW, I still don't think they're better than flying Airtran. And their only perk, sharing credit, is going out the window. So I might be looking to other airlines next year, if I'm still here in California.

I'm sure it's going to be for adults only. As a child can not sit in one of those, and no lap child. Which is going to take away from the market. I wonder if there's going to be height requirements on them, they look like they can only fit an adult between a certain height range. Too tall or too short, and you'd be out of luck. I also would not trust those things when it comes to turbulence.

Flying used to be nice. Now with baggage fees, security from H*** and dirty airplanes. Squishing us together like sardines. I HATE IT!!!!!! I smoke and with all the stress to get ready to board I WANT to smoke a carton before loading. IT'S A CIRCUS
:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I'm sure they will gladly offer you a higher cost alternative.

They could offer it, but I wouldnt pay it.. I fly now when I find good deals, but personally I would just drive each time.. Huge pain since its about a 20 hour drive, but thats just me..

Im sure there would be those people who would pay it, if there was no alternative, but personally I would think more people would drive if they could..

This tends to only be true when going into smaller airports. I am flying twice very soon on SW and both trips of over a 1000 miles are non-stop.

The closest they can get a person towards a standing position without having him come loose from the seat belt and hitting the ceiling during turbulence.

But one thing the sample frames (if you don't want to call them seats) in the picture does not account for is shoulder width.

how do you put a car seat in one of those?

You couldn't. At all.

What gets me, is that the woman looks like she's holding herself up (much like one would if they were doing wall squats). They don't look comfy at all...even for a short flight.

If the airlines choose to go that route and pack more people on the plane, I'll be skipping the flights, and tacking a few extra days on the front and back of my vacations to drive there instead. :(
