hi all,
as some of you might know from some post last week.my fire house got a few rookies sent to us last week.these young whipper snappers have around 3 weeks out of the FDNY academy.so anyway i was talking to one of the senior guys from my fire house today and listen to what one of these rooks did.he went to the captain explaining that he the rookie with less than 3 weeks on the job is upset that he has to work x-mas eve,x-mas day and new years eve.he said it was not right or fair and he was gonna call the union to file a complaint.anyway he did it this am,he called a union and the delegate spoke to him and explained to him that well he was the new guy and that's how it works.even i with 7 + years have to work the same days.this kid apperantly has filed a grivence against FDNY and our union saying that none has help him with this matter and that he is being discrimatied against because he's new.WHAT are they teaching these new guys up at the academy?why does he think he should have off hoildays with less than 3 weeks on the job and this captain, our captain is a good guy.this rookie has just opened a can of woop tush that he cannot win.also now the guys at my fire house have found there reason and issue to really dig into this kid and really bust his chops.he's in for a very rough year with us,if he stays at my fire house.also one of the guys who has these days off has 18 years on the job and told this kid he would work for him for five hundred dollars ,this kid did'nt like that too much. LET THE ROOKIE GAMES AND ABUSE BEGIN!!my car needs a good waxing,as well as all the guys car working tommorrow night! and also it looks like we have a new butler at the fire house,i just hope this rookie can handle all the orders. trust me you have no idea,how some of my senior guys at the fire house will bother this kid and bust his chops.he is in for a tough year.

Whenever I get a "probie" with that kind of attitude, my answer is very short & direct.

It's something to the effect of "see that big square thing on the wall over there? It's called a door. If you do not like your job conditions, then use it & don't let it hit you on the butt on the way out. We like our door too much for that."

So just who did he expect to work on Christmas Day? My mother had almost 20 years with the phone company and she still had to work either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

it pure "entitlement" mentality. i encountered the same thing as a supervisor in a government agency. new hires would be agast that they could'nt have the time off they wanted for the holidays "but i have vacation time on my time card, i earned it-you have to let me use it". i would just pull out the mou and show them how it was purely by seniority (hey, i had staff with 15 years who had waited 10 before they ever got the days immediatly before or after the holidays off-we happened to be lucky enuf to work for an agency that was closed on the major holidays). then it would be "but i have kids, you knew i had kids when you hired me"-which would get the reply "yes, and you knew you had kids when you applied and signed your conditions of employment contract".

your newbie will also be the first one to have a fit and file a grievance when there is a choice opening in another location (that people have waited 10 or 15 years to try to move into) and he does'nt have enuf seniority to be in the running.

I saw this a lot working in an office, too. New college graduates would be all P.O.'d when they found out what the real world was like. No one had to work holidays, but they'd get mad when told they couldn't stay in 5 star hotels when traveling on business. Um, no, even the bigwigs stay at the Sheraton, you can too.

Hey brother ,
I've got 18 years on the job and I am only the number two senior guy on my job. I was able to get seven days off for Christmas due to the fact the senior guy above me told the Chief he didn't want it off and give it to me. So we have a junior Capt. who says to me "You're always off for Christmas why don't I give it up"? Well I explained to the brain dead Capt. in no uncertain terms that the other times I got the holiday off was the new guys swaping with me and me swaping with them for New years eve. I told him it's not my fault nobody likes him and won't work for him, I'm lucky we have a brand new batch of young kids but, they all understand their place when it comes to holidays. Matter of fact right after Thanksgiving I had three of the come to me on the same day and ask if they need them to work for me I thought that was top notch of them to do that.
I do however know how you feel with your probies, I only encountered one that I will never, ever help out. I was training him in engine company chauffer operations and eveytime I showed him an operation on the engine he said he already knew what to do so, after his fourth "I know it all" comment I stood back and said show me, well he was lost so I walked away and told him I was done and to find someone else to train him. Well you know how fast word spreads in the house all the other brothers that this kid went to turned him down, it's now three years later and he still didn't get his upgrade.
Sucks to be him. Anyway good luck with your probies I'm sure they are in for a good eye opening whe they're told "Welcome to the FDNY, you're working Christmas"

I am shocked! Since I work at a police department I have a pretty good idea of what is in store for Mr. New Guy and it ain't pretty! I wonder if he has any idea of how stupid he is and what a pile of you know what he has made??? OUCH!

yep,i also really don't mind working any holiday,double pay and lots of great food at the fire house.working 16 hours on a holiday is equal to doing 32 hours,thats alomost a weeks salary.all in one day of work.

You gotta love the overtime and holiday pay! And let me just say, as a former new york city resident, THANK YOU. We all appreciate how difficult your jobs are and how much loss and sacrifice you all have had to deal with for our safety. Happy Holidays.

I have to agree..he sounds like an entitlement brat.
We'd get them all the time when I worked in retail.
"WHAT? I'm NOT going to be getting 10 bucks an hour for a part time sales job?Waaaah! I'm gonna go tell my maaaaaaaaaaaaaammy!"

There was a job I had once where two young men came in and asked for applications. No biggie, I've seen it a hundred times where friends go out and job-hunt together to make it more pleasurable. They came back a little while later and handed me the filled out apps. Then one of them asked me if the boss would hire both of them. I told them I wasn't sure. I was then told by the teens that either they were hired together or they wouldn't accept a job offer at all. I told them that it was a virtual impossibility the boss wuld hire BOTH of them and even if she did, they'd probably be working opposite shifts or something. The boys told me they ONLY worked as a team or not at all. I had to try and not laugh as they walked out, clearly miffed at the fact that OMG..they'd be split up if they really wanted to work there.

Man.............I was thinking the very same thing! Given everything and never having to work for anything, I see it at my job everyday, and "most" wouldn't know how to give a good days work in 100 years!

I don't think it's Gen Xers, it's the next batch, it's the Gen Y group. As a Gen Xer, we didn't get trophies for showing up, we still had the Honor roll at school, and we were allowed to play outside and ride our bikes all over the place w/o Mommy watching over us like a hawk.

As far as working holidays, I don't mind it. Last Christmas, I worked 2 shows and had a meal penalty! Paid for almost all the gifts.

My daughter is working Christmas. She isn't complaining at all. She is home for the holidays and happy to make some extra money for the next 3 weeks. I think both may be working but I know the older one for sure.
