People, particularly bosses or owners, who act like two year olds by not being able to manage conflicts and as a result lose the most valuable employees. I think it's usually an ego thing.

The worst part is everyone is a loser when that happens. Loyal customers, loyal employees and even the lame owners/bosses all lose out. Fortunately for the bosses/owners they're usually too pig-headed to realize it. It's the rest of us that see a good thing go downhill fast.

It's also hard when people decide to go out and start a competing business on their own. What's a boss to do????? Wish them well? That happens...I've seen it recently.

They can try and hang on to the friendships that have developed, but it doesn't always work out.

Doesn't matter how nice anyone is in that situation.

Yes, a good boss would wish them well...assuming there are no legal reasons forbidding them from starting a competing business. Sure there are such things as non-compete clauses, but the courts don't seem to hold those up very often anymore and they look for certain factors when they do hold them up.

I believe some states are even looking at banning non-compete covenants. In California, they are pretty much non-enforceable from what I've read.

You do raise some interesting questions!

I think it all boils down to the caliber and quality of the "leader" as a person.

If an employer is honest and self empowered by the knowledge that their operations are valid and carry worth to their market....and they have their own special 'brand'....then I'd like to think that a GOOD boss/owner is bigger than any 'issues'....and could/can carry on without playing favorites and having to laspe into less than mature management methods....secure in the knowledge and belief in their own 'product'.

Isn't that the polite verison of the American dream?
