You do WHAT? - Inspired by the occupation thread

I get that when people ask what I do and I tell them I am a credentialing manager. They have no clue what I do.

I used to be a service advisor at a car dealership. You know--the person who checks in your car and is the liaison between the customer and the mechanic. I can also do minor repairs to cars. This always amazes people--I'm very much a girly girl. I think they're surprised that I used to have a job where I had dirty fingernails a good deal of the time. :teeth: People are also surprised that I can guess at what's wrong with their vehicle pretty accurately.

I had the same problem! I started as an advisor moved up to Asst Serv Mgr & then onto Service Manager. They always asked for the manager & when I came out were like huh? I can diagnose a car problem better or just as good as most techs. I didn't mind popping the hood & showing the customer what that noise was or leak was. I would take the computer hook it up & get the diagnostic trouble codes. Now I am going to school to be a massage therapist LOL...Big change!

mine's not necessarily a "you do what" situation but more of a situation that, when I tell them what I do, they feel free to joke about it and say derogatory things, b/c that's what everyone does.

Now you have me curious....what is it that you do?

People always ask me WHY I would want to do my job. They assume it would be depressing. (we own a monument store).
I tell them it is anything but depressing. We meet the most interesting people, and hear the most amazing life stories. I love older folks, and most of our customers are older. We love helping people, and we love talking to people. It's kind of fun actually.

Don't get me wrong, we have our bad days, where we get those tear your heart out kind of tragedies, and it's just awful. But we help those folks too, and hopefully they leave our store with one less thing to worry about, and we've helped them memorialize their loved one forever. It's not depressing, it's gratifying.

Thats really nice. I'm glad people like you do this kind of work and I am sure the people who are coming to you in need of your services do too! Having lost loved ones, I was so relieved to deal with folks like yourself who really cared about me and my feelings regarding the person who had died. I think it takes a special person to do that kind of work (or do that kind of work well, I should say!) Kudos to you.

Nope, a degree in history and spanish - I was extremely lucky to get my job and (thankfully) I'm thriving in it! :)

i don't for a minute believe you are an investment banker. :rotfl2: :rotfl: without an extensive background in finance? business? accounting?

hey, there's always television...on the next Jerry Springer show... :happytv:

I've been a traffic manager for 26 years and I've always gotten the question.. "Do you fly around in a helicopter?"

"No.... I put the commercials on the log".

:confused3 No recognition.

"In Radio"

"OOOOH!!!! THAT's why you have that voice!!!"

"No I have had the voice all my life..."

If I had a DIME for every time I had this conversation.... :lmao:

When people ask me what I do I say, "I'm a sales consultant, I sell candles". They say, "No, I mean your REAL job..." They don't have a clue how much money I really make and it makes me sooo mad that they think I need to work 50+ hours a week in my degree field to have a "Real" job. BTW - I taught HS English for 6 years. You couldn't pay me to go back to that.... I love the flexibility I have now.

they always ask me "you do WHAT???" when I tell them that I am the IT SOX Coordinator.

I can't blame them... it's not a well-known something.

Me too! Not the only thing, but one of the biggest things I do!

It wasn't a paid job but I was a volunteer firefighter for 8 yrs. I stopped when I had to start commuting over an hour to work b/c I would miss all the classes/mtgs/drills and such and couldn't put my hours in. But just last week I made a cooment to some co-workers and they were shocked that I did something like that. Manily b/c I am a girl and they look at me like I might break a nail or something :confused3 when I am so far from a girlie girl. I usuallly just laugh it off.
