You Best Start Believing in Ghost Stories...Halloween on the Dream | The End P40 8/15

Two? Two? I'm two updates behind on a Barry TR? This is just not acceptable in most cases but, as you know, I have a good excuse.

Two great updates...dinner looks yummy (I could go for some of that prime rib right now).

Villians show sounds like a lot of fun...glad you got there for better seats (and pics) this time.

Love all the pictures in the update! :thumbsup2 It's very easy to take a lot of pictures on that ship.

Glad y'all enjoyed the show. I loved it so much! Hades is my favorite Disney villain so I was very happy to see them do a show with him at the center.
Hades (well, and the actor that played him) did a fantastic job! I can't wait to see this show again!

Can't say I ever have.
Clearly you're hanging out in all the wrong places.

Just curious: can you try out the Evil-O-Meter on your own, before or after the show? And on what scale is evil measured? Is it level 1 - 10, with 1 being the school lunchlady and 10 being the guy who stops your boat in IASW?
You must have had a nice lunch lady. Ours smoked Marlboros and changed the "meat" in the mystery meat every week.

Including this sentence? :confused3
That's for you to decide. I wouldn't exactly be an International Man of Mystery if I just told you, would I?

Nice! Kronk is by far the best part of that movie.
Agreed. And now he and David Spade are doing that sitcom "Rules of Engagement" together. I know it's on CBS, but they have to slip in a nod to that move sometime, right?
Make sure you stow your bags and hats...even these little beauties.
:thumbsup2

I still thought it was funny. But so is the Pull My Finger trick.
Ryder has a pretty good grip. I'm teaching him that joke now.

You mean I have to book an entire Disney Cruise just to see the end of this show?

Ok, sign me up.
Sorry if I hurt you with all that arm twisting. Make sure you book yourself a nice massage in the on-board spa to help.

Hopefully Castaway Cay is still awesome.
Not to spoil the surprise, but yeah, it kind of is.

That show looks like a lot of fun! And thanks for mentioning that the kids weren't scared, I wondered. :thumbsup2
Madison had a pretty hard aversion to villains for a while, and she had no problem with the show.
Who wouldn't plop down in a throne? I would.
You'll have to wait until I get off.

Looking forward to hearing about Castaway Cay! We're considering DCL, and I'm a little obsessed with everyone's experience on the island. It seems like there's so much to do that no 2 families do the same thing.:thumbsup2
There is sooooo much to do. You couldn't be bored on that island if you tried.

I don't know about Barry's experience (yet), but we thought Castaway Cay was the highlight of the cruise. Loved it.
::yes::

What an awesome way to celebrate Halloween!!!
It really looks like the kids enjoyed every minute. I can't wait!

Amanda
Well, according to your PTR, you're done waiting and on the ship now. Hope you're having a great time!

Y'all should definitely consider doing a Disney cruise! Maddie would love the kids club! It really is so much fun.

I think the May 18, 2013 Eastern Caribbean sailing on the Fantasy would be a terrific cruise for y'all. :rolleyes1 Maddie could play with Reid in the kids club!
Look at that. I think a playdate was just arranged on my TR. :thumbsup2

::yes:: I agree! I really wish they would build a hotel there so I could stay there for a week...or 2....or 20. :rotfl:
I think we just found something that would book faster than Le Cellier!

Two? Two? I'm two updates behind on a Barry TR? This is just not acceptable in most cases but, as you know, I have a good excuse.
Yes, yes you do. But my TRs will always be here, waiting.
Two great updates...dinner looks yummy (I could go for some of that prime rib right now).

Villians show sounds like a lot of fun...glad you got there for better seats (and pics) this time.
I could too. Today's lunch just didn't do anything for me. A big hunk of beef always hits the spot!

Adopt me and take me on your next cruise.. Madison would love a big sister :)

Love all the Halloween fun and the towel ghost with chocolate eyes!

Adopt me and take me on your next cruise.. Madison would love a big sister :)
I'm sure she would! But I've never done international adoptions before. And I've heard some horror stories from people that have. They fly over to meet the child, then a few months later fly back to finalize everything and are given a different kid than the one they saw earlier. I'd hate to take that chance, end up with a different Irish Lass, then have you read the Cruise TR and think "That should have been me..."
:rotfl2:
Love all the Halloween fun and the towel ghost with chocolate eyes!
Disney did a great job decorating the ship and throwing the parties!

I guess I forgot to mention it earlier, but aside from that first night, we rarely felt the ship move at all. The seas had settled down considerable. The up side to this was that more people were enjoying the cruise (our stateroom attendant told us that the ship's medical center was packed the first night). The down side was that we didn't have the ship's gentle swaying to rock us to sleep. Not that we'd need it, what with the very comfy beds and sheets and the fact that we were partying all day and zonked out as soon as we crawled in.

We awoke on Tuesday morning and peered out of the porthole to see...

IMG_9844.JPG

Castaway Cay! Disney's private island, and if I were to believe everything I've read on the DIS, our own little slice of paradise to enjoy for the day. I had high hopes for this day and this island, but first - breakfast.

Back up to Cabanas for a few bites to eat to fuel up for a day of fun. The deck seating was filled up with people taking in the views of the Cay (pronounced "key", but spelled funny.) and who could blame them? So we "settled" for a spot under some palm trees.

IMG_9845.JPG

I say "settled" because my dining options at home are my kitchen counter with a ceiling light (and if I ever get around to it, a fan), my dining room table with a sort of fancy-ish looking hanging light/chandelier thingy, or my patio table with a birch tree above it. All ranging from "serviceable" to "nice", but not approaching Palm Tree levels of awesomeness.

After another thorough enjoying of the Cabana's breakfast buffet, we were ready to get off the ship! Problem was - the ship was not ready for us to get off. You can begin going ashore at 9:00am, and we had 30 minutes or so to kill. So it was up a few floors from Cabanas to Goofy's Sports Deck for a few games of Foosball.

IMG_9855.JPG

(There was going to be a pun in here about Chip Foose, car designer and consultant to Pixar for the paint schemes in Cars and Cars 2, but even I thought it might be too obscure. Then I was going to talk about Kathy Bate's character in Waterboy until I remember she was talking about football but calling it Foosball. So I've had two jokes completely fall apart on in this paragraph. But that won't stop me! I will continue on!)

A shot up the AquaDuck, looking out to sea.

IMG_9856.JPG

And finally, looking out over the beach at Castaway Cay.

IMG_9857.JPG

IMG_9858.JPG

Finally, the Mickey Hands on my watch told me it was time to head down to Deck 1 go ashore. (Because "go ashore" sounds so much cooler than "get off the boat." Reason #428 why pirates are cool - their vocabulary.) We grabbed some towels from the Crew Members on the dock and started down the path. When lo and behold what did we see? A Photo Op!

3943118.jpg

...and then...ANOTHER!

3942745.jpg

Hey, Disney went all the work to put them there, we might as well use them, right? We jumped on the next tram and took it to the 2nd Family Beach stop. Research indicated that the first fills up quickly, and the 2nd is likely to be pretty sparse early in the day. Sure enough, we arrived to find plenty of open chairs and umbrellas. Claiming a set for ourselves, we headed to the sand to do some calisthenics...

100_2281.JPG

...and if you believe that, I've got the deed to a nice piece of oceanfront property in the Arizona desert that I'd like to talk to you about.

But before we sprinted down the sand, stripping off any unnecessary clothes as we went and diving headfirst into the crystal clear water of the Bahamas, we had a little business to take care of. If Disney has taught us anything, it's that the day after Halloween is the day Christmas starts. And since Halloween was yesterday, it was time to take our family Christmas card picture.

IMG_9866.JPG

(Remember when I said waaaaay back in chapter 3 about making a quick stop at the Christmas Shoppe (there's that extra "pe" - it must be a fancy store!) in the Magic Kingdom? Well, the kids both had personalized Santa hats with Mickey (or Minnie) ears. Bambi and needed to match, didn't we? Of course we did! If you were on our Christmas Card list this past holiday season, your mailbox was stuffed with joyous holiday greetings, direct from Castaway Cay. If you didn't get one, ummm... I must not have your updated address or something. Maybe the mailman lost it. Yeah, that's it.

Soooo.....anyway.

We stowed our Santa hats in our beach bag (how many times have you heard that old line?) and headed for Pelican Plunge - the water slides that dump you right into the ocean.

IMG_9869.JPG

DSCF0294.JPG

Well, almost all of us. While she may or may not have taken a ride or two or three on the AquaDuck, Bambi was taking no chances being pregnant and going down the Plunge. And for good reason. Both tubes drop you about 3 feet down - and the open tube does throw you out a good ways, but the closed tube gets you going fast and you make a very big KAABLOOSH when you hit the water.

She did make her way up to the observation deck to get some good pictures of us on the slides. Which is where Ryder and I will be waiting, camera in hand, a few minutes after 9:00am Bahamian time on Saturday March 9th. Taking pictures of Bambi, Madison and Evan sliding down. Now that it's on the Internet, it has to be true.

DSCF0296.JPG

DSCF0301.JPG

Yes, it's deep there. I don't know how deep, but it's more than 5'10" because all of me was in the water and there was still more water to go before I hit sand. Life jackets are suggested for the littler ones (free of charge!), and there are lifeguards watching.

We were smart enough to get there early so we got a few trips down with hardly any waiting. Later in the day, the wait was probably an hour or more. So we headed back to the beach to just play in the water.

DSCF0305.JPG

DSCF0306.JPG

But this is when Madison had a little meltdown. I think too much excitement, not enough sleep, and the irrational fears of a 7 year old all came together when a tiny little fish either brushed up against her leg or was just in the same general area as her. She immediately became deathly afraid of the water and all of horrible man eating, sharp teethed, razor clawed creatures that were lurking in the crystal clear waters of Castaway Cay's family beach. Bambi spent probably 30 minutes calming her down and getting her back into the water. (I'm still not sure how I lucked into marrying a saint like that that, but I'm sure glad I did!). Madison still wasn't 100% sure that she wasn't going to be devoured by some gigantic 4" fish, but she did go back into the water to play. Or in this case, ride on Grandma & Grandpa's "Magic Carpet"

DSCF0309.JPG

Coming Up Next: Bambi and I head out to open water!

Love Castaway Cay!

The Christmas card photo is too cute! Great idea! :thumbsup2

Maybe I'll be brave enough to try the water slides next year. Maybe.

I'm glad Madison got back into the water. It can be so hard to calm a child down once they go into that meltdown mode.

Castaway Cay! Disney's private island, and if I were to believe everything I've read on the DIS, our own little slice of paradise to enjoy for the day.
Well, I can't say that I believe everything I read on the DIS, but I'd definitely believe that.

(pronounced "key", but spelled funny.)
What's the deal with everyting being spelled funny???:lmao:

(There was going to be a pun in here about Chip Foose, car designer and consultant to Pixar for the paint schemes in Cars and Cars 2, but even I thought it might be too obscure.
I would have picked up on that one, but thanks for sparing us an unnecessary pun.

Then I was going to talk about Kathy Bate's character in Waterboy until I remember she was talking about football but calling it Foosball.
Yeah, but she definitely did call it foosball, so does it really matter what she was referring to?:confused3 Maybe you just felt like your material was too weak... :rolleyes1

So I've had two jokes completely fall apart on in this paragraph. But that won't stop me! I will continue on!)
We know. Even when the ones you actually do use fall apart, it still doesn't seem to slow you down. :rotfl2:

I'd laugh, but it seems to be the truth...

Nice Picture! :thumbsup2

5, carry the 2... um, just once.

Which is where Ryder and I will be waiting, camera in hand, a few minutes after 9:00am Bahamian time on Saturday March 9th. Taking pictures of Bambi, Madison and Evan sliding down. Now that it's on the Internet, it has to be true.
And the fact that it is on the internet and you're the one who put it there must just about double the credibility of that statement.

Or in this case, ride on Grandma & Grandpa's "Magic Carpet"
She's gonna need a bigger boat.

Damn you and your logic *shakes fist* :lmao::rotfl:

Luvin the Xmas card picture on the beach!

Coming late to the party!

Your family is too cute.

As we were eating dessert, Denis came over and gathered both kids up at the end of the table. He showed them a toothpick, placed it in a napkin, and folded it up. He then had Evan break the napkin-rolled toothpick in half, and had Madison hold it while he mumbled a few ancient Croatian spells.

He then unfolded the napkin to reveal a fully intact toothpick. The kids were amazed. I was about to fly out of my seat, accuse him of being a witch and throw him overboard. Bambi stopped me just in the nick of time, saying it was just a trick. Trick or not, I kept my eye on him the rest of the cruise.

This cracked me up!

I guess I forgot to mention it earlier, but aside from that first night, we rarely felt the ship move at all. The seas had settled down considerable.

Definitely a good thing. You don't want to be re-enacting the pie-eating scene from Stand By Me on vacation.

You arrrrrrrrre correct. :thumbsup2

They're not that bad, a lot of fun!
I'm glad Madison got back into the water. It can be so hard to calm a child down once they go into that meltdown mode.
Meltdowns are easy. Irrational meltdowns are next to impossible.

Well, I can't say that I believe everything I read on the DIS, but I'd definitely believe that.
You have choose.... wisely.

It's a conspiracy, man.

Most of the people we send cards to are located in the cold, snowy Midwest. We thought we'd send them a little warmth for Christmas.

5, carry the 2... um, just once.

Thanks!

By the way - love the username!:thumbsup2

Definitely a good thing. You don't want to be re-enacting the pie-eating scene from Stand By Me on vacation.
Yeah, cleaning up barf in your stateroom would be horrible. I've heard. Especially while the fireworks are being shot off. :rolleyes1

You can call it your own private island for a day. It's fun to say it that way.
Yes, but it looses a bit of the fun when 4000 other people are saying it too.

That all sounds better than "scarfing down a Pop-Tart in the car".
You should put a toaster in the car. Might save you a few minutes in the morning.

:confused3

I'm sorry, what were we talking about again?
If you don't know, how do you expect me to?

I'm just going to stare at this for a few minutes.

I'm not sure either, but I think it was something about Brian's mother. :confused3

Hey, I think I've seen that somewhere. Another great picture.
Thanks!

KAABLOOSH--is that a nautical term? :confused3
Yes, it's the sound you hear as you're on the poop deck.

So let it be written, so let it be done.
Wow. That makes it sound all official and stuff.

So getting up for Rope Drop works here too.
::yes::

Thanks for the update Oh Frozen One. (bet you weren't expecting to be called that today?) :lmao:

Now stow the mainsails and swab the decks, ye scurvy scalawags!

How dare you say that about my mother.:furious:

Nice reference there Yul.

Call down, I'm sure something was missed in translation and he was actually talking about your mother in law.

Thanks Mark for providing the "Good Vibrations" :music: feel it, feel it.... or is that the wrong Mark? :lmao:
Captain_Oblivious and the Funky Bunch has a nice ring to it.

I got pretty far behind with your TR, but I was in the world for awhile, so I have an excuse.

Love the halloween costumes and the halloween festivities look great. Definitely still thinking of a Halloween cruise in 2013 since it's my DH's birthday.

Love that shot of the aqua duck.

I also love the family Christmas card picture. Loved how it went from Halloween to Christmas in one. Cool picture of the CC beach too. It looks so festive. :thumbsup2

That's as valid of an excuse if I've ever hear!

You really should! It's a blast!

As wonderful as that ship is, CC has to be the highlight of the cruise!

By now it was mid-morning and Bambi and I had waited for the kids to be distracted by Grandma & Grandpa and turn their backs to us. As soon as they did, we turned and sprinted toward the snorkeling lagoon. Being cheapskates that we are, we brought along one set of 10 year old snorkeling gear from home and only had to rent one set from Disney's rental counter.

We walked down the sandy beach to the water's edge, put on our masks, flippers and mandatory (and free) inflatable life vests. I then had a Cast Member take our picture. However, being in flippers, a mask and a neon-snot colored vest was not a flattering picture to myself or Bambi. That picture will never see the light of day if I know what's good for me. And I know what's good for me.

So instead, enjoy these pictures taken with the camera facing away from us...

Disney has built a snorkeling lagoon for visitors to Castaway Cay and sunk some pretty cool stuff down there for you to find. The problem is that it is a very, very long swim out there. But thankfully once you are out there, you don't have to just swim aimlessly looking for cool stuff. Each item has an orange bouy floating above it. You may not know what you're heading at when you pick a bouy to swim to, but you'll find something there.

The first bouy we got to was this:

DSCF0321.JPG

DSCF0322.JPG

The "wreckage" of one of the Nautilus submarines from the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride that used to live in Magic Kingdom in the area that was once behind Ariel's Grotto and is currently under construction as the Fantasyland expansion.

On our way to the next bouy, we found a school of fish trying to form shapes and have us guess what it is. Just like the show at Animator's Palate! I'll give Disney credit - they really know how to tie things together, don't they?

DSCF0327.JPG

(By the way, I believe what they were trying to form above is "transcendentalism". Or maybe it's a spoon. I'm not quite sure.

We got lucky at our next orange bouy. None other than the head cheese himself, Mickey Mouse.

DSCF0330.JPG

Which was good, because we had been fighting the choppy water for quite a while and we were starting to tire. There were plenty of other bouys to explore, but we decided it was better to head back to shore rather than leave the orphan children in the care of their grandparents.

On the way, we came across another artifact, but I don't know if it has any significant Disney tie-in or if it just looked cool.

DSCF0333.JPG

See those tiny beach umbrellas over there? Yeah, that's how far out we were.

DSCF0337.JPG

And back there is our ride home.

DSCF0338.JPG

DSCF0339.JPG

We swam for shore, eventually washing up on the sand like Tom Hanks in Castaway. Except where his view was nothing but open sea and FedEx boxes, we got to see this:

IMG_9875.JPG

Also, instead of digging a pit to do our business, Disney planned ahead and installed some facilities with indoor plumbing and running water. That's just another example of Disney's level of customer service. Then, they decorated the outsides with puns. ...und genius!

DSCF0344.JPG

DSCF0345.JPG

That "Bearings" on is much more subtle. When you get your bearings, you know where you are and where you're headed. But the box is on it's side. It hasn't gotten it's bearings yet! This is amazing stuff here, people!

And far be it from Disney to use the standard "Bouys" and "Gulls" on it's bathroom doors. They went above and beyond here.

DSCF0346.JPG

Well, after a morning of swimming, snorkeling and belly laughing at all of plumbing puns, I was getting a wee bit famished. We wandered over to Cookies Too for a BBQ lunch - hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, grilled chicken & fish and all the traditional sides and desserts that you would expect. We gathered up a few platefuls and made out way over to covered eating area.

DSCF0347.JPG

Lunch on shore - just like all of the meals on the boat - was delicious. After lunch we headed back to our beach chairs to reapply sunscreen and mug for the camera.

100_2285.JPG

I'm not sure if there's a class less than flyweight, but Evan, you're in it.

After beating a gaggle of young ladies away with a stick, I made Evan put on a shirt. We then left grandma & grandpa to do their own snorkeling while we walked over to rent some bicycles for an island tour.

IMG_9879.JPG

Disney has set out a path for runners/bikers that takes you down the runway of their airport. There is a little spur trail that takes you back into the wilderness (complete with Disney-esque props and displays) and finally back to a lookout tower. The view was pretty spectacular from up there, especially with the Dream in the background.

IMG_9901.JPG

Well, most of the view was spectacular. Disney picked the right side of the island to build out the amenities. (Well, I guess it could be the left side if you hold your map upside down) Because on that side is lush green forest, white sand and tropical breezes. The other side of the island is...

IMG_9903.JPG

So, we jumped back on our rental bikes and continued all the way down the runway to the adult section of the island. The path turned right, along the back sides of the private cabanas and continued on out to a deserted section of beach where you could see nothing for miles and miles. And it was the most wonderful nothing I'd ever seen.

IMG_9906.JPG

IMG_9909.JPG

Disney also had a nice cold cooler of water available here, which was very thoughtful of them since it was a very long bike ride on a warm day. It was made even longer since Madison, against my best parental advice, picked a bike that was just a wee bit too small for her. And on top of that, the seat kept slipping down, making it even shorter. Every few hundred yards I have to stop, lift her seat back up, tighten the little lever as much as I could, and ride some more. I sure wasn't comfortable for her, but she made it though.

We arrived back at the village, returned the bikes, stowed the cameras and just concentrated on having a boat load of fun before we had to get back on the...boat. We played in the water, had a little ice cream and played in the water some more.

But it was getting closer and closer to dinner time so we packed up and headed for the stores. We found some Castaway Cay pins and t-shirts, charged them to room, and made our way back to the Dream.

We boarded the ship and headed to our stateroom to shower up and change clothes. I think the kids went to the Oceaneer's club for a little while allowing Bambi and I some more quiet time on the deck, watching the last of the castaways pack up and leave paradise.

Coming Up What's a Pirates favorite restaurant?
Arrrrrrby's.
Nope.
Long John Silvers?
Nope.

Find out next...

That picture will never see the light of day if I know what's good for me. And I know what's good for me.
I'm sure it could be brought out to see the light of day. Surely with as many humiliating photos as you have of Evan, we could get him to produce some of you... :rolleyes1

But thankfully once you are out there, you don't have to just swim aimlessly looking for cool stuff. Each item has an orange bouy floating above it. You may not know what you're heading at when you pick a bouy to swim to, but you'll find something there.
Isn't that cheating?

Then, they decorated the outsides with puns. ...und genius!
Forget the snorkeling, the water slide, the BBQ and the blue sparkling water... this was clearly your favorite part of the island.

That "Bearings" on is much more subtle. When you get your bearings, you know where you are and where you're headed. But the box is on it's side. It hasn't gotten it's bearings yet! This is amazing stuff here, people!
I'm kind of surprised by your appreciation of this. I usually don't think subtle when I think of you and puns. :lmao:

It was made even longer since Madison, against my best parental advice, picked a bike that was just a wee bit too small for her. And on top of that, the seat kept slipping down, making it even shorter. Every few hundred yards I have to stop, lift her seat back up, tighten the little lever as much as I could, and ride some more. I sure wasn't comfortable for her, but she made it though.
Well, let's look at the positive side of this bike ride. Nobody tried to ride their bike off the side of a cliff. :thumbsup2
