It must have worked I don't remember any plagues being blamed on fleas.
Bubonic plague is carried and transmitted by fleas, and the prairie dogs are the unsuspecting hosts for these fleas. Believe it or not, there are several cases of Bubonic plague every year in the United States. Fortuneately, it can be treated with antibiotics. I used to have to put up signs that warned of the plague in the areas of the colonies.
