Hi.....so we moved from one state to another..and right before my License expired I went and got the new one in the new state. They have given me a paper copy..however..I'm not sure I'll get mine in the mail in time. Has anyone had this happen before? The old one is expired now....and no time to get a passport.

When is your cruise?

Not sure. The minimum requirement for cruising on a closed-loop cruise, for US citizens is a birth certificate plus (for those 16 and over) a government-issued photo ID. As far as I know, most state's temp licence is not a "valid ID", and doesn't usually have a photo on it. I'm not sure you can use an expired DL, but it couldn't hurt to bring it along (since it has a picture and the name would match).

It may be best to go for an expedited passport (costs more). One where you actually visit a passport office and get same day service. You can do that if you're within 2 weeks of your cruise. Sorry.

Does it have your picture on it? You need a Goverment issued photo ID.

U.S. Citizens on closed-loop cruises will be able to enter or depart the country on the cruise with proof of citizenship, such as an original or copy of his or her birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where he or she was born) and, if 16 or older, a government issued photo ID.

Passports "sound" expensive, but just get one. I know that it's probably too late to get one for this trip, but having one on-hand (in a fireproof safe in your home) is a good thing, because you never know what is going to turn up.... I've never "unexpectedly" needed one, but know a few people that were able to jump on a last minute opportunity because they had it.

Good Luck coming up with a Photo ID before your trip.

and just curious --- how long did you live in the new state before you applied for your new license. I'm pretty sure that both your old and new states along with your insurance company would have liked to known that you moved.

See, I didn't know people actually cruised without passports.

What would happen if you had an emergency and couldn't get back on the ship and then couldn't leave the country you're in because you have no passport? Seems risky to me.

Even my 1 year old has a passport, just in case.

I agree with above poster....would never cruise without a passport.
We asked TA about getting DGD one or not and she said definitely get one. We would have anyway, just checking.

Well this will be my third cruise without a passport. People do it. It's not a money issue...we just have never felt the need. It does have my picture on it...but it's paper. We leave March 4th...flying out March 3rd.

Does it say anywhere on it "not valid for ID"? In California, they do. Or, at least, used to.

I never heard of a paper ID. in CT we get our new one in a matter minutes after we meet with the DMV or AAA person. Good luck, and enjoy your cruise..I also cruise without a passport...stuck in a tropical place doesn't sound so bad, my friend went to St. Maarten and never returned...now he owns a scuba equipment business...

I had a paper ID issued recently when I lost my existing ID. It did have a picture, and was valid ID. I flew with it several times before my "real" ID came.

Just a note, but to a previous poster, I'm pretty sure there is NO requirement to tell a state that you are leaving. When you enter a state with the intent to remain as a resident, most states have a time period in which you must go to the DMV to obtain a valid license or ID in that state (in Alaska, for example, it's 90 days).

You get a passport. Emergency, expensive, and possibly temporary.

Lucky. More and more states are going away from that. In WA you get a thick paper copy of your DL right there, and then you wait about 2 weeks for it to arrive. Depending on how long the OP's state takes, they could very well get it in time. The WA paper licenses are ID.

I'm surprised to hear yu can fly with just a paper copy of your drivers license? In Illinois you can get a real license immediately. And like others, never occur to me to go on a cruise without a passport. I know lots of people seem to do it but in this day, why take the risk?

As long as you have a Valid Photo ID (that has a date of expiry) on it you are fine. Of course in combination with your Birth Certificate.

Now whether the CBP likes paper IDs, is a whole another thread. Never heard of a paper state ID before.

Can you go to a DMV locale and get a hard photo ID? Even a temporary photo ID is offered in our state. It doesn't always have to be a Drivers License.

Not that this helps now but for future reference I would get a passport. Everyone in my family has one in case of emergency and you need to fly home rather than cruising back to the USA!

you could always go to the DMV and get an ID card. In SC they are $10 and it is a government issued ID. I would think if it gets you on a plane it would get you on the boat. I do agree with others about passport. It is worth it IMO. We cruised first time with just birth certificates but we got passports for the entire family this time.

Here they pattern pin punch your expiring DL and issue the temporary paper as a validation of the pin punched plastic license. You must carry both, neither is valid without the other. It is however only a normal thing here, you run into serious problems at airports outside the state. We can however get a state issued ID card which does serve as government issued picture ID. We travel with our passports any time we leave the state just because.

If its not a money issue, then go get yourself an expedited passport. That way you KNOW you will be able to cruise on the 4th. And then, for 10 years, you will be able to travel at a moment's notice because you have a passport. We got our DD one when she was a few months old, just in case a good travel deal came up and we wanted to go immediately...for example, one night, flights from LAX to London had a glitch and were only $200 round trip for business class. The flight was only a few days later and we were able to go!

As stated by many, you have time to get passports.

It's up to you and your comfort level whether you order them or not.

As posted most would get PP.

Otherwise get a hard copy ID from DMV, to compliment the BC.

It's your personal choice.

Enjoy your sailing, .... if possible. :o

In California, you can't just walk in to the DMV and get a hard copy. You process the paperwork for one and then they mail it to you later...maybe 3-6 weeks?
