Yet another use year question! Sorry!

We're looking at joining and probably vacationing in Nov every other year. What would be my ideal UY and do I have to buy then to have that be my use year? Thanks!

For November trips, I would choose Oct UY. No, you do not have to buy during Oct to get that UY.

Depending on the resort you are buying, if going through Disney, will depend on whether there are still points in that UY and whether you can get it. At this point, I believe you can still get that at BLT, AKV, or SSR.

If you are thinking of buying in via resale, then it is just a matter of waiting for a contract with that UY and the resort that you want. Resale is much cheaper than direct and SSR is a great deal right now.

However, if BLT or AKV interest you, the deals through Disney are pretty good, especially AKV. And, I have heard that those that are buying in at AKV right now, with Oct UY, are still getting 2008 points with there purchase which is a bonus. For BLT, they are only giving 2009 points.

There are probably thousands of UY posts on these boards, but the primary consideration is that you may only bank current UY points during the first eight months of your UY. Therefore, focus on a nine* month period that encompasses the most likely travel periods, and obtain a UY that starts with the first month of that period. Note that if you hardly ever cancel, UY matters less.

What UY you get depends on your method of purchase. If you buy new points, ask your guide what UY you can get. If you buy resale, you should seek out points that already have the UY you'd like. Note that January, May, July, and November don't exist as Use Years. Good luck!

*I say nine here because any cancellation under 31 days of travel eliminates your ability to bank. Therefore, planning a trip in the ninth month would require a cancellation by the 8th month to be able to bank the points anyway.

Thanks! This is our scenario... We want AKV, buying direct thru Disney. We have a vaca planned off site in Dec 2010 that we will NOT be using points. If we were to buy in next month (Sept), when would I have to use points or loose them? I'm thinking we probably wouldn't change/cancel much (as I'm a Planner!) and our fav time to go is in early Nov. I just wasn't sure if we would have to take two trips in 2010 or loose the points... Does that make sense?

If you are already planned for 2010, then those 2008 points would expire if you were able to get them. They would only be good from Oct 1, 2009 - Sept, 30th, 2010.

The only thing you could do, if you bought now and they were still offering them, would be to offer them for rental or transfer and use the money to offset the Dec 2010 trip you already have planned.

Good luck with your new purchase. We just became members in the winter and leave for our first DVC trip in 2 days!!! We bought in at BLT since we love the MK and have waited for a DVC near the MK.

yes, you could bank your 2009 pts and borrow your 2011 pts when you call in january 2010 to book your stay.

Ok, I lied... Sorry! New scenario... become a 100 member next month and I opted for a UY of Oct and I was able to get the 2008 pts... We are planning a big vaca in Dec 2010 that would require 300 points. Can I use the 2008, 2009 and 2010 pts? Or would I have to use the 2008 pts before my trip in Dec? Wasn't sure if I booked the trip BEFORE the 2008 pts expired if I could use them. Again, many thanks!

UY has zero to do with booking. UY is an issue with when you stay.

if your 2008 pts are banked, they will expire in sept 2010...before your dec 2010 stay. you'd need to rent them or use them before the end of sept 2010.
