Our mall is about 25% empty of shops and I just learned that the Lindt chocolate store in that mall is closing as well. In the outlying plazas surrounding the mall we have lost Circuit City and Linens N Things last year and approx. 1/4 of the mall stores inside are empty.

Note: not all Lindt stores are closing; I am just talking about our location at our struggling mall in NH.

Is that Steeplegate? I read in the Concord paper a few weeks ago that the owners are declaring BK. I LOVED the LNT store across the street from the mall. LNT is open online and maybe they will reopen some stores in the future, but I doubt it. BB&B is OK, but the one nearest to me is semi small and just doesn't seem interesting to walk into.

I was going to ask if you were talking about the Maine Mall?

Our Jo-Ann Fabric is closing. Walmart got rid of their fabric selection. Not sure where I'll go now.

Our Jo-Ann Fabrics is closing here in Bowie too.

Did you hear that Eddie Bauer filed for bankruptcy?

So many stores that just can't make it.

I have to drive about 35 miles to get to the nearest Jo-Ann. The Walmart in town did have some fabrics, but like the rest of them, they got rid of it all a few weeks ago. I don't sew that often, but it is irritating to have to go that far. Plus, once I get up there, there are at least 10 in a 15 mile radius. Why they won't bring one down here is anyone's guess.

I read an article in the paper a few weeks back that a target that was under construction just simply stopped building. The gist of the article was that that actually costs more to do then to continue to build it and operate it at a loss, the city planners were stunned and scared of things to come.

I posted last night that we are losing gas stations at an alarming rate. Everytime I turn around another gas station is out of business. With CA having nearly the highest gas prices in the nation the lack of competition can't be good for us. These are all different brands of gas stations too, not just ones owned by one company.

I don't get into the mall too often but when I do they seem to REALLY be pushing merchandise on you and there seem to be very few people in the stores that I have been to. I went into gap the day after christmas last year and I was the ONLY one in the store. I go into Justice and I am the only one in there and they are trying to sell me anything when all I am there for is to pay my bill. We just got Aeropostal and I think AE and not only do I not know one person other then on the dis that has bought clothes there, I have never seen anyone walking in or out of there. I am not stalking the mall so I am sure they have some business at these stores but I would expect it to be alot more. We have a west coast store called Tillys that is like a larger hipper version of Pac Sun and that place is alwaus packed and there is always a line for help, that is the only store I have been in in the last year that I can think of that might be doing fairly well. It is indeed sad with all the BK's and closings. I am still totally puzzled by the gas station thing though.

I find this so sad. So many stores have gone out of business here. A lot of the smaller Mom and Pop type places have gone under. That breaks my heart. That is part of the charm of where we live. I also feel so bad for those people who have worked their business for years only to lose it all.
Then you have stores like Fortunoff that are like from our childhood that are now out of business. All the Marts here seem to be busy all the time though.
I just find it to be very very sad.

Yes it is Steeplegate. I am so concerned about the long term ramifications: jobs, economy etc. I just find the whole thing scary. I don't go to the mall very often but I like the idea of having one. Many of the stores on Main Street downtown near the capitol have closed. Our favorite independently owned ice creamery had to close, they made excellent gelatto.

DH think I am just a worrier, but I feel like trouble is sneaking up on us and we aren't really noticing...

What is Lindt Chocolate?

You must be speaking of the Fox Run mall. I did notice a few stores inside were closed last week when I was there. I love Lindt chocolate and will miss it but as long as Gloria Jean's stays open and I can get my Iced cappaccino and go to Ann Taylor loft I will be happy. :)

Lindts is closing 2/3 of their stores in the US unfortunately :sad1:
