I have been reading the posts about prom and let me say that neither I nor DH went to our proms. We could really care less if our DS's went or not. That aside, DS#1 is planning to go with a group, no date. Okay.

As senior parents we have been "encouraged" to sign up for multiple events all year, including the big one, After Prom. Both DH and I are involved. I am on the planning committee and doing the hospitality room for workers while DH is running an event. We have a budget in excess of $15,000 for this after prom alone. I think this is obscene. Do you know what can be done with that kind of money for countless people in need???

We have a circus theme. Lots of folks are using recycled stuff but they are building a huge slide for the kids to enter by. What? We even have a community walk through the Sat. night of prom. The kids are supposed to be there by midnight and stay until 4am. If they leave, parents are notifies. We only have 180 seniors and get about twice that for the after prom.

To top it off they are renting busses to take the kids to Cedar Point in the morning. Some kids had an accident last year and so the bus, which I think is good. I just feel this is way too much for these kids. Our prom is Memorial Day weekend to boot.

It seems to me each year parents are pushed into doing bigger and more expensive things for kids that really don't care anyway. I really feel we are sending the wrong messages to our kids. When we were teens the kids did the prom and afterprom. They took pride in it and had fun. Now, it is handed to them.

Sorry for the rant. Tired, overworrked Senior parent here.

I never even had the afterprom. This option was never discussed at my district when I had my prom (back in the day)

My current district has some policies with the prom. Parents are REQUIRED to attend a parental meeting (sign in/affadavits) and if the parent does not attend the parent meeting regarding the prom, the student is suspended!

There is a large graduation party similiar to the afterprom. But many things are donated, and family contribute (there are some fairly wealthy families in this district)

Afterproms are exceeding lavish, and in some cases better than the prom itself. I know I would never have been able to go to an all night party. I had a curfew of midnight even when I was engaged to my husband (live at home, live by the rules!)

But I agree the patterns of overspending, making it bigger/better every year, does get into a pattern that doesn't stop.

Our school has an interesting after-prom policy.

1. You must signup to attend after-prom.
2. If you signup and don't showup, your parents get a phone call.
3. If you leave the after-prom party, you aren't allowed back in (which is a similar policy for all school functions).

One of the parents on the after-prom committee was saying how happy she was that rule #2 wasn't enforced when she went to school. She and her BF (whom she later married) apparently "got a room". Apparently she volunteered this information at one of the after-prom meetings to a room full of strangers. You gotta wonder about some people.

Fortunately, our prom days are still a couple years off.

Our prom didn't have an afterprom party. You were free to go where you wished afterwards. Also, we weren't just given money for prom; as a junior, it was your responsibility to put on the prom. As such, the juniors held multiple fundraisers to raise the money for prom. The juniors were also responsible for planning and executing prom. They had to construct the decorations, re-assemble the dance floor, and choose the theme. The system at my high school seemed to work quite well.

I graduated HS 11 yrs ago and I didn't have an after prom and if I did I didn't know a thing about it. Our prom was planned by the Jrs. and decorated etc. by them . I did go out after prom but I was also home by 2am.

After Graduation The parents had an All night lock in party for us. It was held at some sceret location that we were bused to and "locked in" until the next morning. I went by choice. Matter fact I drove myself home from the school the next am B/c my parents were heading to work and couldn't come retrieve me.

Like another poster stated, our junior class is responsible for raising funds and putting together everything for the jr/sr prom. As a result, this year's prom is being held in the good old school cafeteria because the class didn't want to work for enough funds to hold it somewhere else. Oh well, that was their choice.

As for afterprom, what is up with this? I thought prom was supposed to be the big blow-out party of the year but it sounds like now it's just a place to hang out before the afterprom party!
We do not have an organized afterprom party but there will be parties in homes, etc.
My dd is a sophomore but is going to prom with a senior on Saturday. She told me yesterday that she will have all the details of what is going on afterwards tonight. Can't wait to hear this! She most likely will come home as soon as prom is over.

I never went to my own proms or anything like that. I was one of those kids that was "too cool" to be involved in school activities.
I am so glad my dd is not like I was, as I am having too much fun helping her shop for dresses and get ready for all her social events. :)

I don't have any thing to add but I just wanted to say that the title of your thread has me ROFL! Now if anyone has a CPAP thread, they will have to say That is CPAP not CRAP! :teeth:

Mowsie, that is where I got that. I was ROTFLMAO the other night with the prom/porn cpap/crap post. This place is so much fun at times.

:p

Our school rents out country clubs and such, the parents really have nothing to do with it. You basically raise funds throughout high school through various events and fundraisers.

A slide to enter prom? Call me stuck up, but I wouldn't wanna slide down a slide in my pretty new prom dress...it's so poofy I doubt it'd fit on the slide!

We have no after prom scheduled, we do our own thing. My group rented a house in the Hamptons, which I also did last year with my boyfriend and his friends. Some kids rent hotel rooms in the city. If the school sponsored an event, I doubt I'd go.
