Yes I live in Mississippi, land of hicks, red-necks whatever.......so I'm admitting it........I live in the middle of Heck and I've lived a slow life.

Now I need your HELP!!!!

DH and I are going away on a "just us" romantic trip to Disney next week and we are thinking of flying. Yes make the Beverly Hillbilly jokes :p but seriously DH is excited about it and I'm terrified.

Tell me about the first time you flew!!! Help me not be so scared. The thought of arriving in Orlando around 12 noon is so wonderful. Its a 12-13 hour drive from here and we usually stay the night in Mobile or Pensacola......but flying just seems like an adventure if I could get past the fright.

DD 10 has flown about 6 times-- 2 just this year.

Don't be afraid. Get some gum or something to help with the ear pain when landing. Take a book or something to do while in the air. If you can handle some of the rides at WDW then take off and landing will not be scary at all. You will do great and have a wonderful romantic trip!

get a cd player and play some relaxing music...try to meditate...and see your Dr. for some Ativan...best thing going! and it will work::yes::

Don't sit by the window, enjoy the in flight video, and bring a magazine or book to occupy your time.

Think of the positives. You already mentioned the best one -- you are there in no time without any driving. I began flying with no problems and then developed some anxiety but I know that it's really very silly to worry. Heck, chances of getting killed during that 12 hour drive are a lot higher than anything happening on the plane.

Think about how amazing it is to have airplanes and to have the opportunity to fly in one! What a gift. Enjoy it -- it will be beautiful up there in the clouds with the sun shining. For thousands of years people could not fly -- we should relish the opportunity.

Don't worry about things while you are flying. Little dips are natural -- just like the road isn't always flat and straight the airway can have little ups and downs. There is also sort of a constant "whoosh" noise in the plane. Music can help block this out if it annoys you. The pilots are trained and pay close attention to the aircraft. They have families at home that they want to see again -- they will do their best to get you back and forth to WDW safely.

There are many things that are probably contributing to your fear, but the biggest thing may just be fear of the unknown. You are a grown woman and you have handled many challenges in your life. This is just one more challenge and you'll handle it just fine. The worst part will be the anticipation. Once you're buckled in and the plane is in the air, you'll wonder why you were ever worried.

Go for it!!! :sunny:

I'll be honest, I was going to make hick jokes. Ohio has their share too.:D

How long is the flight? Much better than the 12 hr drive. You already got some good advice. How about bringing a video game (Nintendo gameboy for example).

Beth,

Next Thursday I'm flying with someone who's never flown before. I have packed magazines, a CD player and music the person likes. Try doing the same. Get a good book that you really want to read, the time will fly.

Enjoy the new experience.

When are you going to be there? We're there 26-31, maybe we'll see each other.

Barb

Dan! ROTFLMAO......but thats how I feel!!!!!!!

The flight is I think about an hour and 10 minutes from Jackson to Atlanta and then a little over an hour from Atlanta to Disney. So a little over 2 hours of actual air time, NOT MUCH!!!!!

Thanks Esmerelda I'm going to check that sight out. I'll let everyone know what we decide.

It also depends on the prices we can get for flights on Monday. I'm not dipping into savings money and we won't have the actual vacation money until Monday and then we will be leaving on Friday whether by driving or by plane.........right now the roundtrip tickets are about 232.........so as long as they don't sky rocket by Monday we will probably fly.

1. Reserve your seats when you make your reservations. Amazingly, some reservationists don't ask you this.

2. Arrive in plenty of time and know in advance where you are going to park. Most major airports have websites that explain the parking options. If you are pressed for time, that will make you more nervous.

3. Have identification tags on your luggage so you won't have to fumble with that at the last minute.

4. Really think about what you are going to wear so that you don't set off any alarms going through security...being stopped and scrutinized would add to your nerves.

5. BRING YOUR DRIVER'S LICENSE and keep it out. I swear that some airports ask to see ID four times before you actually get on the plane. It can make you flustered to keep putting your DL in your wallet and then have to keep getting it out.

6. Check the flight monitors frequently. Gate changes happen often and that's no big deal unless you don't know about it until the last minute and have to race across the airport to the new gate.

7. Once you've cleared securty, treat yourself to something yummy like Starbucks or a fruit smoothy and drink it slowly.

8. Enjoy!

Oh I do have a few Xanax.......I have them because of my silly panic attacks so you can bet I'll be a

Pill Popping Red Neck HICK if we do fly....LOL!

Barb if everything works out as planned we will be there from the 27-5th!

Is it me or is this thread equipped with sound? Freaked me out for a minute!

Take along a seek and find book and personal CD player, it will help distract you and you will be there in no time!!

Have fun!!

My 75 year old MIL flew for the first time last summer....I think her daughter gave her a Zanax, but she was fine-and she is a major worrywart.:D

Make sure the airline dosen't have some sort of ADVANCED PURCHASE REQUIREMENT...LIKE 7 DAYS!!! Otherwise when you try to buy Monday, you will not have the 7 day advance and the price will be higher!

Good luck whatever you choose!

Just remember when you have to spit out yer chewing tobbaco the windows won't open.
An hour flight will pass by very quickly, they just get to cruising altitude and then start descending for the landing. I hope your trip goes well.

I assume you've read Delswife's trip report and her experience mixing Xanax and flying???? Still cracks me up every time I think about her remarks to the airport security screener! :teeth:

Darn it, I guess I'll have to leave my backker behind then. Hey!! Whats the chances of me seeing one of them there UFOs up there? Oh and will I be able to see my trailer park and MY DOGS from the sky??????

I haven't seen Delswife's report about Xanax....LOL! I need to go find it.
