I am having a huge yard sale in May and donating 100% of the earnings to Susan G Komen and the 3 Day/60 mile walk.
I've never done a yard sale before on a Friday and was hoping for input.
Should I do it on Fri and Sat or just Sat?

Thanks so much!

I would check the ads and see the hot days for your area. Friday is always our biggest day, with Saturday more of a "sale" kind of day (1/2 price, etc.). But I have heard north of us in the Twin Cities, Thursday is the big day for garage sales. :confused3
In all honesty, we are finally going to do a 1 day sale this year on Friday, simply because half of us have a wedding on Saturday. It is something I have supported for many years, simply because we truly don't sell much on Saturday.
Good luck, though. Ours is the Friday before Mother's Day, and it is always a big success!

I'm not sure about it from a seller's end but I know I look forward to yard-sales on Friday while the kids are in school. In fact, I know several moms who each meet with a friend or two and head out after the school bus each Friday but rarely have time for Saturday sales because of lacrosse/baseball/soccer schedules.

There aren't quite as many Friday sales in our area so the ones listed in the paper on Fridays always seem to be well attended - now if I could only get there before the other moms to grab all the best stuff up first...:lmao:

I was thinking about a yard sale myself....mostly what I have to sell are my childrens clothing, DD6 and DS12. I purchase mostly Gap, Gymboree, Target brand, and American Eagle. Will that stuff sell at a yard sale? I have tried Craigslist and Ebay with some/little luck...but would just like to unload it all at once! (usually I give it too charity but our finances have been hit hard over the winter!) So what is the best way to sell?

First check to see if you have a consignment store in your area! Kids' clothes do sell well at garage sales around here, but prices are pretty low. You may get more at a consignment store, even if you only take home 50-70% of the price, and you don't have to do the work. :)

If you do have a garage sale, my best advice would be to put the sizes and name brands in the ad. That way you'll lure the "right" people to your sale. And ask around to see if you can borrow a clothing rack, or try to rig up something yourself. Hanging clothes sell MUCH better than stuff that's folded on tables. That will be a rumpled mess within the first 2 minutes.

Are you going to put up a sign of some kind saying that all proceeds from the sale are going to charity? People might be more "generous" if you kwim.

Good luck with your sale! :)

Don't forget to post yard sale dates/directions & a list of any special goodies on Craigslist. I hear that works really well in our area and since it's free it sure can't hurt. :thumbsup2

Fridays are better attended garage sale days here, also. I always start mine early, like before 8, and stay open until 6:30 or so, to catch people on their way to or from work as well as people with Friday free.

I agree with hanging clothes. I always suspend a closet dowel between two ladders. Works well.

Both Days! In my area the Friday are alway better days.

Ad on Craigslist and Yardsalezipper and any others like that for free. The more places ad is in the better foot traffic you will get and don't forget to ad for the cause for more responses.

Good Luck!:goodvibes

It's funny to me that Friday seems to be the 'better' day according to most of the posters so far. Here where I am, Friday yard sales are a rarity. I guess because a lot of people commute into Baltimore and leave so early and get home late, there just doesn't seem to be much traffic for them around here. :confused3 Saturday is the BIG yard sale day around here. Good Luck with yours. I'm doing at least one in May. ;)

Not sure I agree with you, I used to drive over to have lunch when DH worked near you and found some great sales off md 152. My SIL moved a few years back from Abingdon and couldn't believe how great the sales were over here on Friday. She said the same thing about rarely seeing them before - now we have a standing Friday morning date. You just need to come a little bit west (hereford, fallston, sparks, hampstead, westminster) and join us sometime - as long as you don't need the same size gymbo stuff that is!;)

Hey don't I recognize :magnify: you from another BB thread?;):rolleyes1
When I posted I guess I was thinking mostly about Bel Air and a little bit of Abingdon and Forest Hill. There are really next to no Friday yard sales. Saturday is a HUGE yard sale day for those areas. And most of them are community wide. :yay: Ocassionally, I'll see one here or there. I really don't go over to Fallston much since they don't really want retail development over that way. Nothing to really go for. Hereford is pretty close to, if not, an hour's drive for me.
I know my mom and dad stop at TONS of Friday yard sales up past the MD/PA line on their way to Lancaster. I think :confused3 that the more rural areas do the Friday ones to catch more traffic. People here in Bel Air that have done Friday yard sales did not do well and basically did not think it was worth the effort. I did once get up early on a Friday to go to yard sale once. It was advertised as all Americal girl stuff. I didn't do too bad, but you had to watch 'cause a lot of things were broken, ripped, missing pieces, etc. Which is okay, but her prices weren't cheap. So I was checking things carefully. The yard sales w/ AG stuff is my favorite. I've managed to catch 5 or 6 now and have gotten some great deals. :cool1: We wouldn't be competing for gymbo stuff. My DDs are too big now . As a matter of fact, I have tons that I need to start selling off. Mine are older lines though. I've had a hard time parting w/ their stuff. and most of it has been in storage containers in the finished basement. Hopefully, it will still be in good shape. I remember when I packed it up, some stuff still had the store tags on it. Right after Gymboree, I got into Hartstrings. boy you can really dump some serious $$$ into that stuff. I have tons of that too to get rid of. but I'm not going to yard sale those things. Sorry, not selling off $60 sweaters for $1 or $2. :scared1:
whereabouts are you if you don't mind me asking? If you don't want to post, you can send a PM. but I wouldn't be offended if you'd rather not say. I understand. have a great day. :goodvibes

We did a yard sale 2 years ago with proceeds going to JDRF (DD10 is diabetic) one thing we did which we really think helped was make sure your signs say Charity and the name of the charity. Also we got a laptop set up to the JDRF site for our walk team and people not only paid full price for things but some even added a donation on top. Some didn't buy anything but still donated. I know wilth JDRF we were able to accept CC. We made around 2400, didn't really have that much to sell but people seemed to be more generous when it was a charity and they could charge it.

Good luck!!!
