Brit-Speak / Ameri-Speak:

I was reading a description on Amazon.com of Meera Syal's book "Anita and Me," and it says that the main character "spends her time eavesdropping on the Yard Ladies ...."

What on earth is a Yard Lady?

I've no idea - I'll check the context and see if I can make it out for you.

I haven't the first clue - I even put it in to Yahoo and it came up blank too

Maybe they are women who spend their time chatting/gossipping over the garden fence?

I haven't read the book but I've seen the film and Meera Syal grew up about a mile from where I'm siting at this moment................................I'm 99% certain that AlisonB has it spot on! however, I'm not a native of these parts so I could be wrong!!!!!! ;) :p :teeth:

Just asked DH (who IS a native of these parts) and he's never heard the expression before! He agreed with me that the 'gossiping women' was the most likely!!!! ::yes::

Okay, I'll buy "gossipping ladies" too. I thought it might be a term akin to Dinner Ladies or Lollipop Ladies.

Thanks!
