I can tell you from experience that they are overwhealmed. You may want to tell the partner that there's a website they can set up a page for your nephew to keep up with informing family and friends of what is going on , I did it with my daughter and I can honestly tell you it was therapy for me also to write out not only what was going on but our thoughts as well.

My daughter had bone cancer and our hospital and doctors were three hours away but I cannot emphasize enough the importance of being treated in a place especialized in the disease . We found that in our area NOBODY knew how to treat bone cancer and they wanted to use my daughter as a guinea pig.
Staph infections and low fevers will happen many times.
