about this letter I just opened. It was addressed to only me with a return address of a suite # & Box # in the neighboring city (15mins down the road) & postmarked from the next largest city - 30mins away (where many area folks work)

the letter says

"Hi!
My name is...(first & last name)
and I would like to buy your house.
Please call me if you are interested.
phone number (which is a phone number for this city)

Thanks!
name...

What the HECK?

Our home is not up for sale - never has been - it would not be one that is particularly desireable - there's one across the street for sale. and several in the neighborhood. :confused3

Sounds like a realtor trying to solicit a listing to me. Unless you want to sell your house, I'd just toss it.

In today's market, it sounds like one of those "we buy houses" companies. Of course what they're not telling you is that they want to buy your house for less than 1/2 of what it's worth. They're looking for people that are having financial problems.

On the other hand, before the housing bust, we were getting mailings and phone call from an agent trying to get us to sell. We live on a small semi-private airport and he had a client that was a pilot. He wanted a house on the runway and was contacting all of the owners that had "tie-down rights" in their back yard.

We weren't interested in moving and told him so. After about the 3rd call, we told him not to contact us anymore.

I've had those letters, too. I just toss them.

My guess is it's either a realtor trying to drum up a listing in a "desirable area" or someone trying to prey on people who are in debt over their heads. They offer them a "deal" for their house.

I've know people who have had strangers knock on their doors with genuine offers to buy their homes with cash, but they were always face to face. I've never known or heard of anyone who had a serious offer like that in letter form, I'm thinking it might be a scam of some kind. Maybe so the sender could get into your home in order to check it out for a burglary... sounds like a good way to get people to open up their doors IMO.

Thanks - I'll toss it...I got paranoid since we had our car broken into over the weekend - so I'm now thinking everything is connected - when its not (they caught those people!)

I get them all the time. Also get the "I just sold your neighbor's house"....letters, of course that neighbor is often a mile away!
Despite the recession....or maybe because of....there are people sitting on hundreds of thousands of dollars that they are looking to invest. Interest rates are the pits at the bank. Maybe they aren't comfortable with stocks.

Do a reverse phone number look up on 411.com and see what comes up (a business/home, etc.). I know people that have sent letters to houses they were interested in buying.

I used to get tse letters all the time when the real estate marcket was up.I got 2acres of swamp land here in Florida and they sent me several letters stating they would pay double then the tax evaluation. These letters came from California. So I thought it was a hoax.I called them and they told me the name of thier lawyer in Fl,it was legit. But I denied. We worked to hard to pay for our house and land! But I was tempted.I use that swamp land,it is on the river, for hunting and fishing.

Just wanted to add my 2cents on this!!!
