A group of 5 of us went to Yachtsman Steakhouse to celebrate a birthday and though we had a good time, for the price we paid, it really wasn't worth it. I can say two nights prior I went with a friend to Round Up BBQ at the Studios and though its a completely different restaurant, that was a much better experience!
To start off with, one person in our group who ordered the French onion soup (or as he called it, the "super salty soup" lol) received it a full 10 minutes before the rest of the table received our appetizers. He politely waited for the rest of the table to receive our appetizers, but after about 7 minutes or so, we told him he should just go ahead and start. The rest of us received our appetizers all at the same time (I got the lobster bisque with was soooooo good with those onion rolls!), but it was just odd we all didn't receive our entrees at least somewhat around the same time.
Then we received our entrees, and the clear winner was the pork chop- it was so good! It comes with this feta spoonbread that was also really good! I unfortunately got the New York strip, medium rare, and it wasn't good at all! For $59, I expected something I didn't have to chew and chew and chew on- it was so tough!, though the loaded baked potato that came with it was good.
The awkward part was the round table we sat at wobbled really badly. Watching the 5 wine glasses on the table wobble each time someone tried to cut into their food became funny after a while (if you've ever seen the Lisa from Temecula SNL skit, it was kind of like that). The manager of the restaurant came to our table and asked how everything was, and we mentioned the wobbly table, but he apologized and quickly moved on to the next table. I think he was just making his rounds and didn't want honest feedback; just wanted to show he was there.
Then onto the desserts. I LOVE a good smoked old fashioned cocktail, and I noticed throughout the evening that I would smell a smoky smell occassionally through the restaurant. It made me want a smoked old fashioned so bad, but I didn't see that anywhere on the cocktail menu. The mystery was solved when I ordered the creme brulee and it came covered in a smoked bell glass; they smoke their creme brulee! It was so odd- it didn't really add anything to the flavor of the dessert; just made for an interesting presentation and reveal. The othere desserts at the table, the carrot cake and chocolate cake, were alright, but not $15 each worth of alright.
Our server was nice enough, but you could tell he was overwhelmed and basically did his spiel of what he recommends for each course of the menu without really interacting too much. I think he was just too busy. Even our server at the Round Up BBQ, Liz from Long Beach, CA, at least engaged with us and gave us the lay of the land so to speak in a conversational manner, and that's in a place where you really don't have to order anything- they just bring it all!
Overall, I don't see how they justify the price of the Yachtsman, especially with so many other great steakhouses and restaurants around.
