Raising Kids: NOT for the squeamish!

DS followed DH into the bathroom and I hear DH screaming at me to come wash his (DS's) hands.
I trot in there, good little mother that I am and go "Why?".
DS needs his hands washed because DH was taking a pee and he decided to stick his hands IN the pee stream.

I had a hard time washing DS's hands because I was laughing too hard.

My son has done that too. Ever since, DH won't let him anywhere near the bathroom when he is in there, and that was a couple of years ago!

Actually, the urinary tract is pretty sterile, so there are worse things he could have on his hands!!!!

It's still a pretty gross idea, though. Even if the urinary tract is sparkling clean.

I think DS is just very interested in how 'big boys' go potty since we are in the process of potty training.

My 17 mo DS does this too! We thought it would be a good idea to have him watch Daddy pee since he is in a very imitative stage and we hoped he'd catch on with potty training sooner (when we start to train him). Guess we thought wrong . Now he only gets to watch if I hold him to prevent him from playing in the 'sprinkler' .

We started using Pull-Ups today and I've been carting DS off to the bathroom every fifteen minutes. We have gone through 8!!!! Pull-Ups in about a 5 1/2 hr time period.

If this keeps up, I'll be buying 3-4 pkgs of Pull Ups a week!

They didn't tell me you have to be richer than Bill Gates to raise a child. I had no idea potty training was so expensive.

Instead of pull-ups, we had DS go around with no bottoms on at all when we were home, that worked very well for us. (Of course almost all our our house is tiled though, so "mistakes" weren't the problem they would be with carpet.)

I agree with Aidensmom. We did the no pants thing with my daughter and she was trained pretty fast, about a month I'd say. Obviously when we went out we put on a diaper, but anytime we were home she was pantless. We used pull-ups before that and it was no different than a diaper for her, even the kind that say they have the 'wetness liner'. Oh, and the week I decided she was ready to be completely in underpants I did it at night too, just to not confuse her. Yes, she woke up wet almost every morning that week, but she was totally day-trained after 2 days of that.

Yeah see that's our problem. We have carpet and, crappy as our carpet is, we have to try and maintain it as best we can until we can afford to get new carpet.

We had some carpet too, but believe it or not, she learned very fast that peeing on the floor was not acceptable so she'd use the potty while naked. Put underwear on her and she'd pee through them, but naked I guess it was more 'obvious' so she wouldn't do it.

I'm just worried that I won't get him to the bathroom fast enough and we'll have pee stains/smells all in the carpet.

I'm also worried I didn't start soon enough. Every book I've picked up says you're supposed to start potty training around 18 mos of age. We waited until after his second birthday and it became so stressful, I just quit trying. But within the last couple of weeks, he's started showing signs of being 'ready' (or at least that's how I interpret them): He actually WANTS to go in the bathroom and sit on his potty, he's gotten quite good at pulling his pants up/down and, when in a regular diaper, he lets us know he is wet/dirty by pulling his diaper off and handing it to us. I'd say that's ready for toilet training, wouldn't you?
